Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) I like this idea Katherine very much!

Maybe we could have different rules for each cover color. (This is my idea for a way how to make different groups of books, like in dominoes you have those with one dot, two dots etc.)
So for black cover - you had to read next book with same first name for author, for yellow cover you had to read next book from "Readers Also Enjoyed" section etc...
This could be a nice idea for reading tournament.

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments ohh i like that Dragana

any ideas on how could encompass that dominos has 2 numbers on each thing

Maybe 1 side is your picked book and another is book you found in another person Domino challenge. And that way people can read new books they didn’t know about.

Hmmm.... I forgot about that... If one book is used as one domino piece - maybe one number equivalent is title color and other number equivalent is author name color on cover?

message 1305: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments maybe do something like everyone gets the box of dominos, the pick which domino to play at a time - with the goal to be the first the finish

Katherine (katkattrinn) | 629 comments Dee wrote: "maybe do something like everyone gets the box of dominos, the pick which domino to play at a time - with the goal to be the first the finish"

Good idea. But how many dominos people will get?

So there will be 6 tipes of dots and one without dots. So there will be 7 diferent tasks. For every domino side.

message 1307: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Sounds nice. Needs a lot to make it work, but I am sure you mighty mods can make something out of it. :)

message 1308: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments so everyone gets a complete pack of dominos (which is 22 I think)

there would be 7 categories - have to tool that out

first to finish matching all their domino's and reads the books wins

message 1309: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments so if you have a domino that has a 1 and a 2 - you read a bk that correlates for 1 and 2; then you pick your next domino - with has to be one that has a 1 of a 2 on it - so you read a 1 or 2, and then a book that matches the other category - etc

Yap. That’s right. And maybe be a little bit harder if domino that is in both sides the same like 1 and 1 you have to read 2 books from the same series.

~KarenH~ | 11344 comments The double-six domino set has 28 dominoes in it, but if we wanted to use it as a tournament or a longer challenge we could always go with a higher number...I know they have sets that go at least up to 12 dots per side (that's the one we use for the game my family plays). That would also give more options for different tasks.

message 1312: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katkattrinn) | 629 comments What will the persone who wins gets? Because in all games you need a prise!

message 1313: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments yeah, we don't normally do prizes in the challenges - its a yay, I finished

With 19 we have 190 domino and 380 books.
If we have 10 dots we have 55 dominos and 110 books. And if we do with 7 dots we will have 28 dominos and 52 books.

message 1316: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11344 comments Actually, yes! We've got one tentatively scheduled to start the beginning of next month...stay tuned for details!

but it seemed to die in October.

Katherine (katkattrinn) | 629 comments Hi I just thought about a future challenge.

How about a LOGO CHALLENGE.
Not that long ago in my school was popular to play on your phone Logo quiz. So maybe we have to find some popular products in books.
For example Coca-Cola. And to know that really in this book was this product. you need to write this quote from that book.

Thanks for the idea Katherine!
I'm going to PM you tomorrow to discuss how we might be able to turn it into a challenge.

❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) I love the A-Z challenges and I was thinking last night, when I was reading, that it would be fun to have an A - Z Challenge for City/Towns. The fun would be that most of the time you wouldn't know the town name until you start reading. I'm suggesting that you wouldn't have to post the primary town listed but any town that is mentioned in the book would be fair game. Q, V, X, Y and Z can either be excluded or allowed anywhere in the name.

Thanks for the great idea Crystal! We are discussing how and when we can implement it :)

message 1324: by R~wka (new)

R~wka (r-wka) | 899 comments What about a character name challenge? When there are listed male and female names and you need to read book with characters sharing that name (or similar).

message 1325: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments Kind of like the random word but character names?

message 1326: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11344 comments We've actually done a couple that I can think of like that, a tournament a few years back and then this one about 2 years ago: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 1327: by ❆ Crystal ❆ (new)

❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) I'd also like to suggest (for next year) an A - Z narrator for all of us audiobook fans.

MountainKat | 31599 comments ❆ Crystal ❆ wrote: "I'd also like to suggest (for next year) an A - Z narrator for all of us audiobook fans."

Wow, do you really think there are narrators out there to fill them all?!

message 1329: by ❆ Crystal ❆ (new)

❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) I think so.... audiobooks are becoming really popular. Even the older books are getting newer narrations.
I can set up the challenge for myself between now and the end of the year to see how hard it is. I may need to reach back a few months. Do you want me to try?

message 1330: by ❆ Crystal ❆ (new)

❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) MountainKat, I started the challenge and just reached back August and September of my own audiobooks that I listened to.
It's under the yearly Challenges 2015 message # 57

message 1331: by Ty (new)

Ty | 1943 comments interesting idea - might be tough to be more romance-centric tho.

message 1332: by ❆ Crystal ❆ (last edited Sep 15, 2015 05:34AM) (new)

❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) What do you mean Ty? Stay in the romance genre? None of the other A-Z is required to use only romance books... unless this is something you are looking to change next year.

It came to mind because there are A-Z book, author, male character, female character... and thought why not narrator as well.

It's just a suggestion, defiantly not one you have to use. It just popped in my head and thought I'd share.

message 1333: by Ty (last edited Sep 15, 2015 06:40AM) (new)

Ty | 1943 comments No, unless the challenge specifically states romance-only, then you can use some non-romance books to fulfill your challenges. But the spirit of this group is for romance books, so sure I would like to see more romance than non-romance in completing challenges.

message 1334: by MountainKat, Moderator (new)

MountainKat | 31599 comments It is an interesting idea and one we will look into Crystal. And no, most of our challenges aren't restricted to just romance. But a lot of our members only read romance or nearly only at least, so our challenges need to work in that genre. That doesn't mean any participants need to stay within the genre when doing the challenges though.

Sonia189 | 11 comments Are the yearly challenges for next year picked? Are they going to be the same ones that happened in 2015?

message 1337: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11344 comments The yearly challenges will be posted in just the next few days. Most of the same ones will be back, but there are a couple of new ones and a couple from last year that are taking a break. Stay tuned! :D

message 1338: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 712 comments Hi, I have a suggestion. How about the 'Book Boyfriend Challenge'. You spell out the name of your favourite book boyfriends. For example......

DRAKE MORGAN Unrestrained (Unrestrained, #3) by S.E. Lund S.E. Lund

D Daniela's Crazy Love: The Novel Emily Jane Trent
R The President's Lover Rebecca Lee
A Addicted to Love: Complete Collection Katelyn Skye
K
E

Daniela's Crazy Love The Novel (Cooper & Daniela, #2) by Emily Jane Trent The President's Lover by Rebecca Lee Addicted to Love Complete Collection by Katelyn Skye

M I Married a Billionaire Melanie Marchande
O Illicit Opal Carew
R
G
A
N

I Married a Billionaire by Melanie Marchande Illicit by Opal Carew

Say what book the name is from (just because it would be interesting to know peoples favourite characters and books). Obviously the names you pick will be from books you've already read so you don't have to read those again, just the books that spell out the name.

Each name could be a level (one name is level 1, two names is level 2 etc). Pick as many as you like as long as it's completed in the time frame of the challenge. You can add more Levels as you go along but if you start at a level you can't do less.

You can use the book title, author first or last name or the series title (if series title, write it beside the book you read for that letter).

Just thought it might be interesting.

MountainKat | 31599 comments Thanks Sandra - this looks interesting. The mods will take a look at it and see what we can do.

message 1340: by Susan (new)

Susan (scoutmomskf) | 1842 comments I saw that there is a men in uniform challenge in the ongoing section that is of 3 month duration, with specific requirements.

I would like to do a different men in uniform challenge. The previous owner of it is no longer interested, so I would like to take it over and host it here. I could do it elsewhere, but goodreads makes it so easy :-)

Details are:

Reading Challenge Details:

Runs January 1, 2016 – December 31, 2016 (books read prior to 1/1/2015 do not count towards the challenge). You can join anytime.
The goal is to read as many novels that feature men in uniform as you’d like. It can be a policeman, firefighter, paramedic, doctor, veterinarian, mechanic, military, etc. – as long as the leading man wears some sort of uniform, it counts. See the different levels below and pick the one that works best for you. You can move up a level as often as you’d like but no moving down. Remember, the idea is to challenge yourself.
Books can be any format (print, ebook, audio).
Books can be any genre (contemporary romance, m/m romance, fiction, non-fiction, mystery/thriller, etc.).
Novellas that are 100 pages in length (give or take), as well as full-length novels, will count for this reading challenge.
Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are allowed.

Levels:

Sergeant: read 1–5 men in uniform novels
Lieutenant: read 6–10 men in uniform novels
Captain: read 11–15 men in uniform novels
Chief: read 16+ men in uniform novels

Sonia189 | 11 comments What about themes for each month? I really would love a challenge where I could pick books from my TBR to suit a theme... the A to Z challenges aren't my thing at all.

message 1345: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments Sonia - we have the monthly challenges - where there are 10 categories with different themes (per say)

message 1346: by Sonia189 (new)

Sonia189 | 11 comments Ok... thank you, but I was thinking about it being organized yearly from the beginning, not picking things each month. Ok, I appreciate your help!

~KarenH~ | 11344 comments Susan and Sonia, as close as it is to the end of the year, and with everyone busy with the holidays, chances are we won't be able to get anything worked out with your challenges in time to start the beginning of January. However, if you would like to set something up yourself in the Create-Your-Own Reading Challenge folder, you are more than welcome to do so, and you might get others to join you, too!

If you think you'd get to it soon after the holidays, i"m okay with waiting. As a year long challenge, it's no problem to start a little late and backdate.

If I were to do a Create Your Own, how would I get others to join? It is one I'd really like to share with others, so having it with the other challenges you increase its visibility ;-)

message 1349: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11344 comments To be honest, I really don't have a solid answer for you. I know we wouldn't be able to get set up to start it right away, and we generally don't start new yearly challenges after the beginning of the year, unless it's an ongoing, pick your own start and end date kind of thing. Keep in mind that depending on what else we have going on, a challenge suggested in this thread won't necessarily get used right away, and for that matter there's no guarantee it will get used at all (although we do try to use the vast majority of them) Also, and this is just my personal opinion, we haven't discussed it among the mods at all, but with the numbers that you have it seems to me it might work better with a shorter time frame, maybe 3-6 months instead of a year. If you're open to that as a possibility, it gives us more options as to how and when we might use it.

As far as the Create Your Own Challenge thread goes, since that is primarily used for personal challenges we don't have anything specifically set up to invite others to join. Another option though would be the Dare You to Read Challenge thread. It is specifically designed for this purpose, to create a challenge and have other people join in, and I know a lot of people check that thread looking for new and different challenges to join. That would probably be more what you're looking for if you're specifically interested in having others join with you.

Thank you!
