Valorie | 2218 comments Wow, that's some serious reading! Love the idea Courtney!

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 561 comments Lately I've noticed lots of comments about all the series that people have got started. I was thinking about a year long challenge, where you aim to complete/get up to date in a certain number (like 5, 10 etc different series). Would that come under the Yearly Challenges - or Other challenges.

message 1203: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments Then there is the Serial Reader Challenge - Here
It is a year long challenge that you get to determine start and end dates.

There is a Super Series Challenge - Here
and it is in the yearly section. With this one, looks like you have to use the series title to get A-Z.

Is that the type of thing you are looking for?

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 561 comments I just finished the Serial Reader Challenge.

Tried an A-Z series challenge last year - but didn't go so well. I don't want to start lots of new series, I want to get a grip on the ones I've already go going.

message 1205: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments Charlotte, didn't you create one in the SOS group? You could create the same here if Yz is ok. I think it would help people to catch up on the series.

I have a challenge concept similar to what you are looking for. I will be launching it anytime this week. So stay tuned. :)

Vi | 2794 comments Great news, Yz! Can't wait for the challenge!

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 561 comments Yes Vi, that was me, I wasn't really sure where to put it and I didn't want to step on anyones toes. To be honest it's only the second challenge I've set up - I don't get many good ideas!!!

message 1209: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments Here I was thinking about doing another Serial Reader, but now I want to wait till you have the new one set up. Thanks for letting me know.

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments Just kicking things off for the March monthly! (I was bored!)

The name of March comes from ancient Rome, when March was the first month of the year and named Martius after Mars or Ares, the Greek god of war.

March's birthstones are aquamarine and bloodstone. These stones mean courage.

American Red Cross Month
Women's History Month (United States)
National Reading Day (United States), March 2

Texas Independence Day, March 2: State holiday in-Texas, United States

Mardi Gras (February 3 to March 9 in regular years, February 4 to March 9 in leap years)

Saint Patrick's Day, March 17
Sun-Earth Day, March 18

Easter, the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21, usually, but not always, occurring in April.

World Water Day, March 22
Celebration of the Greek War of Independence, March 25, 1821
Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament
Spring Training for Major League Baseball
•Irish-American Heritage Month
•Music in our Schools Month
•National Craft Month
Share a Smile Day
Multiple Personalities Day
Barbie's Birthday - Barbie Doll was introduced on this day in 1959.
Girl Scout Day - Girl Scouts founded in 1912.
Albert Einstein's Birthday - Born in 1879.
•National Teen-Agers Day
•Single Parents' Day
•Alaska Purchased - Purchased from Russia in 1867.
•Doctor's Day

The challenge is up. Link to Thread

message 1219: by Angela (new)

Angela (angieerickson) | 439 comments The Geography Read is my least favourite in the challenge, but I do it because I don't like skipping any portion of a challenge.

Currently, the Geography read is 'Read a book with an author, character, or setting from (insert location). Could we add a component to this read? Maybe include a link to the location's climate or agriculture?

Using this month's state as an example, Kansas is well known for its extreme weather conditions, including humidity and tornadoes. It's also known for its agriculture; cattle, hogs, wheat, and corn. If its too late for April, could we try it going forward as of May?

This is how it would sound:
Geography: Read a book whose author, character or setting is from Kansas, or link your read to the state climate (extreme humidity, tornadoes) or state agriculture (farming cattle, hogs, wheat, corn).

Thank you for considering my suggestion.

message 1220: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Nice twist to the category, Angie.

I'll definitely suggest it to whoever is the challenge host for the month.

message 1221: by Angela (new)

Angela (angieerickson) | 439 comments Thanks Yz. :)

message 1222: by Katharina (new)

Katharina | 802 comments May = Transportation month:

Read a book with a cover that pictures something that is used for transport ie. plane, train, car, motorcycle, carriage, horse.

Legs don't count. ;)

message 1223: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments Angie, I've modified the category with your suggestion in mind with a twist. Any feedback will be very welcome :)

message 1224: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) Vi wrote: "Angie, I've modified the category with your suggestion in mind with a twist. Any feedback will be very welcome :)"

I love addition of more options to the geography section. I usually avoided it, because sometimes I could not find anything interesting to hit it, but now with more options, it's easier.
And this way we get to learn about things that are famous for that country/region.

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 809 comments I would like to see the Full Moon challenge again

D.G. | 4477 comments Jane (PS) wrote: "Apropos to nothing much, we had a beautiful moon here last night :) "

It was supposed to a special moon that seemed to be closer to the Earth (Hubby read all about it) but it was so foggy last night that we couldn't see it.

I hope we get a chance tonight.

message 1230: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments It was a massive yellow moon coming over the horizon between our sheds. Absolutely beautiful. Will have to google why it was special!

message 1231: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments It is called a Super Moon and it was gorgeous :DD

D.G was right, it was on its closest approach to Earth, that's why it was huge.

message 1232: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11344 comments It was too foggy for us to see it last night too, but I'm hoping I'll get to see it tonight - not quite full, but it's still supposed to be pretty spectacular.

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 809 comments The moon looked so pretty here tonight in Texas

Sandra | 4260 comments Well, it's only 12.45am so it's not really, really late. I'm sure Lizz can handle it. LOL.

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Guess I'm showing my age - I'm hopeless after 10.30pm ;)

message 1237: by Sandra (new)

My hubby grumbles and tells me it's bedtime, but that's as far as it goes.

I should have been but I needed to finish a book

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 809 comments The funny thing is I get sleepy around 9 or 930 on the weekends lol

message 1243: by Mary X (last edited Jun 12, 2012 09:44AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Sorry if someone else suggested this:

The other day a challenge idea popped into my head that kind of connects the Follow the Leader and Name Game Challenge.

What about a challenge where each book you connect books by character names. I've read 4 romance books in a row with a heroine with the name Sophie. The same rule as the name game could be applied where the character has to be somewhat substantial. Not necessarily a main character but more than just mentioned.

Oh and not only with the same name over again. Like say the main character oif one book was Sophie and then Sophie was a minor character in the next book which also had a John and then you used John to go to another book etc...,

message 1244: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Nice idea Mary :) I'll put that idea on the table and see how we can knit it into the future challenge timetable.

message 1245: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments That would work well for a series reader. So many of the next boos characters are introduced early. I like that chain idea too.

message 1246: by Amy (last edited Jul 30, 2012 09:37AM) (new)

Amy Denim (amydemin) | 33 comments Ladies,
What about a RITA nominee and award winner challenge? It would cross all genres and maybe some people would find some great new authors in some genres they haven't read before. I've got the list of the 2012 nominees and winners (from the July 28th award ceremony) if that would help.
It includes books like Dragon Bound (Elder Races, #1) by Thea Harrison
I Love the Earl (The Truth About the Duke #0.5) by Caroline Linden
How to Bake a Perfect Life by Barbara O'Neal
First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones
Soldier's Last Stand (H.O.T. Watch #3) by Cindy Dees
and
A Night to Surrender (Spindle Cove, #1) by Tessa Dare
and many more.

I love that idea! Would you like to create the challenge or would you like one of us Mods to do it? Or a collaberation?

I will run the idea past Yz and the other Mods- let me know what you would like to do :)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1573 comments Do we have enough readers of LGBT romance (or folks curious enough to give it a shot) to justify an LGBT challenge? I've got a few ideas, but not a solid concept. If anyone else has been thinking along these lines, I'd be happy to co-host. (Especially since I've never hosted a challenge before.)
