Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Great suggestions, everyone.

Now, I just need someone to host July's monthly challenge. PM me if interested.

P.S.: This is a post and run announcement. So bear with me, if I do not get to respond to any pms immediately.

message 1107: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments I've been wondering when we would get the categories for the monthly challenge! Thanks for letting us know, Yz.

message 1108: by Katharina (new)

Katharina | 802 comments Since the July challenge will be posted any day now, let's start with possible August challenges.

August 30th is Frankenstein Day. It's the birthday of author Mary Shelley who wrote the book in 1818. Challenge could be: read a book with a scarred or crippled Hero or Heroine, or read a horror book.

August is Romance Awareness Month - maybe read a book from the first (#?) pages of the Romance shelf.

message 1109: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments The July has already been put up actually.

message 1110: by Katharina (last edited Jun 25, 2011 02:19PM) (new)

Katharina | 802 comments I noticed that it got posted just a few hours later and I already picked my books for it. :)

Here's a list of more August celebrations:

Water Quality Month: Read a book with some water on the cover or the word water, wet or rain in the title or a book with a setting on a ship (no spaceship though, gotta be water. lol)

9 Book Lovers Day
10 Lazy Day
13 Left Hander's Day: Read a book while holding it in your left hand only - just kidding

18 Bad Poetry Day
19 Aviation Day
22 Be an Angel Day
23 Ride the Wind Day

27 Global Forgiveness Day
28 Race Your Mouse Day
30 Frankenstein Day: see above

message 1112: by Lacy (new)

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments Since August is the last month of the summer, we could have a 'back to school' category.

Back to School: A book that takes place at the beginning of the school year, starting college, an adult goes back to school or going undercover at a school.

Something like that anyway.

message 1113: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Good one Lacy :) - Or read a young adult book...

message 1114: by Penney (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments The 'Dog Days of Summer', I think we used this last year but...
Animal on the cover, shifter book, dog in the story or a hot, sultry cover

message 1115: by Kami (new)

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments August About this sound (pronunciation) (help·info) is the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of seven months with a length of 31 days.[1]

This month was originally named Sextilis in Latin, because it was the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BC, when March was the first month of the year. About 700 BC it became the eighth month when January and February were added to the year before March by King Numa Pompilius, who also gave it 29 days. Julius Caesar added two days when he created the Julian calendar in 45 BC giving it its modern length of 31 days. In 8 BC it was renamed in honor of Augustus, who did not take a day from February (see the debunked theory on month lengths). According to a Senatus consultum quoted by Macrobius, he chose this month because it was the time of several of his great triumphs, including the conquest of Egypt.[2]

In the Southern Hemisphere, August is the seasonal equivalent of February in the Northern Hemisphere.

In common years no other month starts on the same day of the week as August, though in leap years February starts on the same day. August ends on the same day of the week as November every year.
