I thought about that, but wouldn't a martini also be like a chick-lit?

message 952: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i don't think martini's are all that sweet are they?? lol! they aren't my kind of drink...

I would say Martini would be more women's lit, for the mature, sophisticated reader

Dee, you need to try a French Martini and a Chocolate Martini- you will be a Martini convert!

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Ohhhh, liquor...me likey! I'll try and come up with a few in just a bit. Jim would be great at this one too. :)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments I'll have a list in the morning. Been having computer problems/working on taxes/working on a project most of the day. How many categories of drinks do you want? 10? I can do that.

message 960: by Penney (last edited Apr 06, 2011 06:01AM) (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Yesterday, I showered and then crashed...hard. So here are some of my suggestions. I'm not so good at tying them to book categories, so please feel free to add, tweak and discard :)

Bloody Mary ~ Suspense/Horror, Red Cover, Kick-ass heroine.
Cosmo (ala Sex in the City) ~ Chick Lit, book with friends as main characters..
Mojito ~ Set in Latin America, Latino character, Set on a beach or beach on cover, Green cover
Rob Roy ~ Scottish Character, set in Scotland, main character is an outlaw/rebel 'hero"
Manhattan ~ Set in NY
Martini (shaken not stirred) ~ Spy/Spec ops/Undercover agent, set in England or English character, Romantic suspense
Salty Dog ~ Pirate, Set on ship/Boat...
Sex on the Beach ~ Erotica, Set on beach or beach on the cover
7&7 ~ 7 letters in authors name (1st or last), 7 words in title, 7th in series, number in the title.
Tennessee Cowboy ~ Set in the South (US), Cowboy as main character...

These are just cocktails, but I suppose you could do other challenges with beers, wines & types of liquors as well.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Here are a couple that could be put together for a drinking challenge. Use what you will.

1. Rusty Nail - Read a book that takes place in the 'Rust Belt' (a region of the US stretching from Milwalkee to Syracuse and including former great industrial cities)
2. Manhattan - Read a book with a man wearing a hat. Just kidding. Of course read a book that takes place in NYC.
3. Tequilla Sunrise - Read a book that takes place in Mexico or the SW US (west Texas to San Diego) or has a sunrise on the cover.
4. Lemon Drop - Read a book with a yellow cover.
5. Singapore Sling - Read a book that takes place in SE Asia.
6. Rum Runner - Read a book that takes place in the Caribbean or deals with smuggling/import-export.
7. Rob Roy - Read a book based in Scotland or with a Scottish character.
8. Jägerbomb - Read a book that takes place in Germany, has something to do with a bull, or has an explosion sound in the title (Bang, Boom, KaPow!)
9. Snakebite - Read a book that has something to do with snakes or occurs along the Snake River (basically anywhere in Idaho)
10. Bay Breeze - Read a book that has something to do with sailing or boats.

Altenates:

Well, there are a whole category of drinks that I just couldn't think of how to place them. Perhaps they would be better suited for a challenge in one of the erotica groups. In any event they could be a challenge all to themselves being matched with different erotica acts. The drinks in question include (but are not limited to): Orgasm, Screaming Orgasm, Flaming Orgasm, Sex on the Beach, Three Way Sex, Blow Job, Hot Buttered Nipples, Slippery Nipple, and Cream in the Panties.

Then there are those drinks that are just so potent/vile that you only ever drink one at the end of the night when you aren't sure if you want to pass out or puke and this last drink will make sure you do one or the other. These drinks could be paired with books that were so bad you want to forget them or so boring that you can't remember the main character's name 15 minutes after you close the cover. Again, the drinks in question would be: Hurlmaker, FYU (Fuck You Up), Swampwater, Afterbirth and Vulcan Mind Grip.

other drinks that would be easy to match with a category:
Margarita
Sangria
Long Island Iced Tea - read a book where a character goes by a different name
Flaming Dr. Pepper
Blue Hawaii
Monkey Gland
Zombie
Hairy Virgin
Bloody Mary
Alabama Slamma'
Kamikaze
White/Black Russian
Mint Julip - I hear Kentucky callin'
Cosmopolitan
Harvy Wallbanger - surely you can come up with a book to match this
Irish Coffee
Four Horseman
Boilermaker - a book with trains.
One Balled Dictator - A book taking place in Germany, France, or during WWII

I could go on, but I'm sure you get the idea.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Note: of the above listed drinks, I've never had:
One Balled Dictator - If I have French champagne, why would I wast it in this manner.
Afterbirth - that much sloe gin mixed with anything is just disgusting
Hairy Virgin - well, the drink at least
Cream in the Panties - Clam juice is for Bloody Marys and soups only in my opinion. It should NEVER be mixed with Bailey's
Irish Coffee - I don't like coffee.

Other than that, I've had at least one of all the rest. Hundreds if not thousands of some.

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments Penney and Jim,
Great ideas!

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Oh Penney, I was typing my list and working on other things and didn't see that you put one up. I never thought of the Salty Dog! I haven't had one of those in a long time. Of course then again, I haven't had grapefruit juice in a long time.

message 965: by Penney (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Jim, you lush! Lol, are you sure you've never had a one balled dictator? That's not what your wife said ;-P

message 966: by Penney (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments A salty dog sounds kinda nasty to me. I haven't a Tennessee Cowboy either.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments I've had both of those drinks Penney. I used to tend bar and I have a couple of well worn cocktail guides that have seen much experimentation.

The Salty Dog is just Vodka and Grapefruit juice with a bit of salt on the rim. It's actually pretty good.

The Tennesee Cowboy is a Jack Daniels drink. I'm a bourbon guy at heart so I've tried just about all the Jack drinks I could. (I know that Jack is not truly a bourbon as it is made in Tennessee but we'll let that slide for now)

As for the One-Balled Dictator... I'm sure you could come up with many interesting topics to talk with my wife about. But I guarantee you she would never say that I had a One Balled Dictator.

message 968: by Kami (new)

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments White Russian - Book Set in Russia

Long Island Ice Tea - Book set in Long Island

Kamikaze - A book with a "daredevil" type character. A character set at self destruct. Or a book set in Japan.

Mint Julep - Book set down South like in Kentucky.

Zombie - (I do love me the zombies. How about Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Which would also work for May's Zombie Awareness month)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Cream in the Panties **giggle, giggle**

It's a shame the drink sounds vomit inducing tho.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments It's basically Vodka and Clam Juice with Bailey's served over ice. I imagine it would be fine with clam chowder in the afternoon. I've put clam juice in some Bloody Mary recipes and it works there. But it's equal parts cj to v in this drink. I just haven't been in the right frame of mind to try it.

message 976: by Courtney (new)

Courtney K (cklueh) | 510 comments I think for that challenge, you should have to drink the corresponding cocktail.

message 980: by Jane (PS), Moderator (last edited Apr 06, 2011 07:27PM) (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments A book with smoke or fire in the title, a book with dragons or demons in it, a book with a car or fire on the cover?

...Doesn't a Katie MacAlister title have both dragons and a car on the cover...?

Ok - it isn't exactly a lamborghini...Fire Me Up

I think both the drinks challenge and the chocolate challenge have 'legs'. Maybe one of them could be the next quarterly challenge (Jun-Aug)?

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 561 comments I'm intrigued to know what's in a "Fuck You Up"....

message 984: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments lemon lime soda (aka sprite) - 1/2 oz
apple schnaps - 1 oz
vodka - 1oz

message 985: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i'm thinking we need to revitalize jim's bar again...with all this drink talking

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 561 comments Delicious Dee Challenge Addict wrote: "lemon lime soda (aka sprite) - 1/2 oz

Oooooohhhh I like the sound of that. But unfortunately I'm a lightweight when it comes to drinking. Mixing my drinks makes me sick. So I guess I'd just have to drink those all night.

message 987: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments lol...as long as i don't mix cream/milk based drinks with non-milk based ones...i'm good...

There are suggestions for may on the previous page also, just have a lot of posts for the drinking games in between.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Don't worry about May. I've got it covered. I volunteered to do May and Yz sent me the Geography already. I've tried to stick to the traditional route whilst still putting the "Jim" spin on things. I hope you like the categories.

Tomorrow the new monthly will be posted.

*grins evilly at making you wait to see what they are*
