Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments I think I love that idea!

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments The January monthly should definitely have a 'New' category to ring in the new year. How about a new author (one with only one book published) or maybe just an author you've yet to read (new to you).

Because it is the first month, how about the first book in a series.

Yes the above two suggestions are variations on the same theme. But you will find that first and new are really different concepts when you get down to it.

Statistically January is the coldest month of the year in most of North America. so something with cold or ice in the title would be apropos.

I was thinking I'm going to do this for both Read-the-Season and Read-the-Month.

Lynne (lovetoreadgal) | 1182 comments I was reading something where they talked about classic TV and I thought that might make a great challenge. For instance, the TV show Dynasty and you would read a book written by someone who's published a lot of books, like Nora Roberts, Mary Balogh, etc. Mary Tyler Moore Show read something about the TV industry. M.A.S.H read something about a doctor, nurse, etc.

While I was thinking about the Dynasty part, I also wondered about doing a challenge around the R.I.T.A. award winning books.

Just some ideas.

message 756: by Kim (new)

Kim (catmommie) For Dynasty, you can also do about the rich & famous, either real or imaginary. Nora Roberts and Danielle Steele can help you there!

message 757: by exxcentrica (new)

exxcentrica @Lynne I have found some of my favorite writers by reading RITA winning books :)

message 758: by Kim (last edited Dec 04, 2010 08:58PM) (new)

Kim (catmommie) January 25-29: National Take Back Your Time Week. Time travel.

January 16: Appreciate Your Dragon Day.

January 10: United Nations Day. A book regarding a treaty of countries, clans, worlds, etc. Maybe about WWIII? (UN was created to prevent that.)

that's all for now.

message 759: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments Any excuse to read a Dragon book is OK with me. LOL.

Hmmm and I had already decided which books to read for Winter! Please Yz post this soon so I know what I need to read for that season. :)

message 762: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments January being the first in the year:
first in a new series
book beginning with A
author beginning with A (last or first name)

message 763: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments January - Australia Day & India Republic Day both Jan 26 - so why don't we read a book from another country/culture other than our own (whereever we may be).

A summer book - Jan is the hottest mth of the yr here & those in cold climes probably want to read something hot, to warm up.

message 764: by Kami (new)

Kami (aidansmama) | 988 comments January is named after Janus (Ianuarius), the god of the doorway; the name has its beginnings in Roman mythology, coming from the Latin word for door (ianua) – January is the door to the year. (Maybe the word door or doorway in the book's title?) In Finnish, the month is called tammikuu, meaning month of the oak, but the original meaning was the month of the heart of winter, as tammi has initially meant axis or core. In Czech this month is called leden, meaning ice month. In Ukrainian it is січень meaning cutting or slicing perhaps referring to the wind. January's birthstone is the garnet which represents constancy. (Thank you Wikipedia!)

message 765: by D.G. (last edited Dec 10, 2010 04:27AM) (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Yz - Going with the idea of using a different language to spell the month or the season, you can use Google Translate to find other alternatives besides Spanish, Italian, French etc. :)

Here's the link: http://translate.google.com/#en|tr|

For instance, January in Welsh is: Ionawr

No U! LOL!

You can even call the challenge:
Read the Month in Welsh: January

:)

message 766: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments ohhh, so do a different month in a different language?

message 767: by Penney (last edited Dec 10, 2010 05:58AM) (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Even though I've been saving An Unexpected Obsession for January (how sick is that?), I really, really like this idea. It's like a surprise every month :D

D.G. | 4477 comments Delicious Dee Challenge Addict wrote: "ohhh, so do a different month in a different language?"

Oh definitely! Like Penney said, that would make it more of a surprise every month. :)

message 769: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments D.G. and Dee,

I think I'm going for Spanish for 2011.

So, its going to be READ-the-Month and Read-the-Season Spanish edition. What do you guys, think?

message 770: by Penney (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments WooHoo!

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments So, each year, we will use a different language. : )

message 773: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments I liked the idea of using a different language per month, LOL. :)

But however you like to do it, Yz....after all, your the hostess. :) Just know that you'll have problems with the word for Fall which is OTOÑO because of the ñ - which is NOT an N with a squiggly line up top. It's a completely different letter for us Spanish Speakers and we take exception when people think it's an N. :)

Hmm...didn't think about that. Might have to change languages here.

*runs back to the drawing board*

message 775: by D.G. (last edited Dec 10, 2010 10:01AM) (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Here are the words in Spanish for all the seasons and months:

Months:
Enero
Febrero
Marzo
Abril
Mayo
Junio
Julio
Agosto
Septiembre
Octubre
Noviembre
Diciembre

Seasons (starting with Winter):
Invierno
Primavera
Verano
Otoño

message 776: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1287 comments Could we make the n~ a wildcard letter?

message 777: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments What I don't like about using Spanish the whole year is that we'll have too many O's and E's...too many vowels in general. :)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments D.G. wrote: "What I don't like about using Spanish the whole year is that we'll have too many O's and E's...too many vowels in general. :)"

Unfortunately, that problem is not limited to Spanish alone.

I'm going to go with Italian for 2011 (no funky letters/symbols that I can see right now).

Thanks for the input and the suggestion, guys.

*off to put together the Read-the-Season challenge*

message 779: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (casswish) I would enjoy seeing a jobs challenge, with categories like you would see when you're filling out surveys and such and you have to choose which job category you fall under? Such as:

Legal
Public Service (police, fire, etc...)
Politics
Clerical
Art

and so on. I think that would be fun!

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Have we done an astrology challenge?

Gemini - twins
Taurus - cattle/rancher
pisces - Fisherman

that sort of thing.

I like that one too. Aries is a ram. Leo is a lion. Aquarius is water bearer.

message 783: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 19, 2010 12:39AM) (new)

Hey, don't know if anyone's ever suggested these ideas. But I thought you could do scenarios (if you are sticking strictly to romance). e.g.

Bodyguard
Employer/Employee
Married
Single mother
Single father

Or, occupations in alphabetical order since you guys seem to like that a lot (to me, it's kind of random, that's all).

Another idea I had was nationalities. Characters where there is a, "foreigner". I'm not completely sure if there are a lot of books out there like that. But I got the idea because Karlene Kubat's lead men characters are almost always foreign. E.g. German, Catalan Spanish (they constantly use foreign words, which I love!)

message 784: by Kim (new)

Kim (catmommie) I guess you can do one as part of a monthly challenge, or all four? well, here's the idea.

Read a book in which the main character or author has the same first name as a parent or grandparent.

message 785: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1287 comments How about a Classic Movies Challenge?

Examples:
Gone With the Wind: Read a book set during the Civil War; read a book set in Georgia; read a book about a southern belle
Casablanca: Read a book set during WWII; read a book set in a nightclub
Psycho: Read a murder mystery or a horror novel
ET the Extra Terrestrial: Read a sci-fi book or a sci-fi romance
The Wizard of Oz: Read a fantasy; read a book set in Kansas; read a book about witches

etc.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Yz, any chance we be gettin' the January cats a tad bit early since many of us will be travelling and want to take a January book with us?

message 791: by Kim (new)

Kim (catmommie) Um, more like have a gift card burning a hole in your pocket on the 26th? :)

message 792: by Beth F (new)

Beth F ::bouncy, bouncy, bouncy:::

I have no real reason for hoping they're posted early except for liking shiny new tasks.

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I love the idea of the zodiac being included in the monthly reading challenge or as a separate yearly challenge.

I was actually just thinking of exactly this the other day... It is why I hopped on to read this post. Great minds Jim!

Short books (less than 300 pgs.) as Feb. is the shortest month.
2nd in a series as Feb is the second month of the year.

Joanne | 195 comments Isn't February the Chinese New Year? So maybe something with an oriental theme.

Just checked and it is Feb 3rd and it is the year of the rabbit if that helps. :)

message 800: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 195 comments I just came across this:
"The word February comes from the word 'februa' - which means cleansing or purification, and reflects the rituals undertaken before Spring."

It came from this website which does have a lot of info about February with some other ideas which could be used:
