Tania | 644 comments You could just call it "Read a book you've been meaning to get to" and then those who need to can use it for book club / yearly challenges etc.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments For Nov 11, Rememberence Day, we could read a book that is the last book in a series or where something ends.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments November is the 11th month. It's one of those months where we have lots of binary dates (eg 11-01-10). In honor of this we could have a book with a mathematician.

It could be called a "git 'er done" challenge.

It could be a "series catch-up," if you're behind on a series. Basically any reading you're behind in, need to return to the library or friend, or just tired of looking at on your shelf. lol

A time also to regroup for 2011, too, and then add books to your Santa's wish list.

message 709: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I know Yz has been working her way through states/counties represented by members...how about one where there is no one represented (i.e. alaska...)

message 710: by Valorie (new)

Valorie | 2218 comments Yay Alaska! Been waiting for it to come around! Good idea Dee!

message 711: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Yz has asked me to put together the November monthly challenge in her absense...so if you have any ideas you'd like to mention, please do it by tomorrow!

message 712: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments DG
this is what was suggested so far:
Get 'Er Done - read a book that fills a another challenge requirement that you've been putting off/ a book that has been on your TBR for more than a year (or something like that)

No One From - a book set in, by an author from a state that has no one represented in our group on GR (I know Alaska is one)

Book Club Book - a book that is a book club read - either here on GR or another place (or if you aren't in any groups, a book in a group that sounds interesting

Binary Dates - book featuring a mathematician (and I would add computer guru)

I would also add
November is Thanksgiving - maybe something focused around family (because its that time of year) or similar

maybe something to do with Mythology - a book featuring an element (be it a god/goddess/creature)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments 11/11 is Armistice Day. You could do something with endings. The last book in a series (to date) or returning home after serving in the wars or something like that.

message 714: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments whoops...I missed that one jim...sowee!

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments NP.

DG, I know Yz is working off of a list for the FAC challenge. Perhaps you could get the name of the next author on the list if you have contact again before she leaves.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments 'One man's trash is another man's treasure.' or at least the old saw goes. Combine this with the American holiday of Thanksgiving and you get...

*** wait for it ***

Turkey Day! - Read a book someone from your friends list has rated one or two stars. Sometimes there really is no accounting for taste (My wife married me 18 years ago. trust me on this one.)

message 717: by D.G. (last edited Oct 21, 2010 12:37PM) (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Yes, I went back a few pages and had already gathered those ideas but I wanted to give people a chance in case they thought of something new. :) I really don't want to screw this up! :{

message 718: by Penney (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments To reinforce Get 'er done, the 15th is "clean your fridge day"

11/13 is Sadie Hawkins Day - Book with a strong heroine or one that pursues the hero.

11/14 Operating room nurse day & 11/30 Stay home b/c your well day - Book set in a hospital or character in the health industry.

11/18- Occult day

11/28 - Red Planet Day - Sci fi or futuristic

Black Friday - Read a book with a black or "dark" cover

message 719: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments I like that one Jim, I have found that there are some books that I just have to read for myself to see why it gets such low rating.

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments That sounds very good Debbie, you're giving me an idea for a Dare....

message 729: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 195 comments How about a Christmas challenge?

I was thinking along the lines of:

Angels: Feature in the story
Nativity: Story based on the Nativity or a story featuring a baby
Tree: In title, on cover or featuring in story
Snow: In title, on cover or featuring in story
Gifts: Set in a department store or shop
Santa: In title, on cover or featuring in story
Mistletoe: In title or on cover
Love: Christmas romance
Holiday: Travel agent or story based when H/H is on holiday or set around Christmas
Food: Chef, cook, caterer, restaurant
Alcohol: Vineyard, wine connoisseur etc

Bonus: Christmas in the title
Bonus: Your favourite feel good/uplifting book

That sort of thing.

message 730: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments Those are all so great Joanne.

message 731: by Tania (new)

Tania | 644 comments Some non-xmas ones...

21 December - Summer / Winter Solstice (depending on your hemisphere) - read a book set in the opposite climate to which you are located - summer for north hem / winter for southern hem.

5 December - King of Thailand's birthday. His colour is yellow (worked out by the day of the week you were born) so read a book about royalty or that has a yellow cover.

Last year they discovered another planet (Romantically named GJ1214b) - so astronaut, sci-fi or space travel theme?

Henri Matisse's birthday - story where one of the main characters is an artist, is set in France or a cover that you feel pays tribute to his work.

Tennyson's The Charge of the Light Brigade was first published - choose a book where one of the main characters is a soldier or a poet, or read a book of poetry.

message 732: by Kim (last edited Nov 09, 2010 08:11AM) (new)

Kim (catmommie) This doesn't fall into a holiday theme, but it does fall into the "end of year" category.

Read a book that you didn't win in First Reads or any other book giveaway.

ok, that works too! I haven't won any in a while. So...can we say, "win a First Reads book?" lol

message 736: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments lol, which ever - finish a first reads book (like as a list category)

message 737: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I guess...what if you've never won a book? although admitedly, I have a lot of firstreads, I still need to finish up

message 738: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments make it like the list category - any first read book that interests you.

message 739: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments that could work..or even, a book given to you as a gift? I dont' want to see like a (pardon the pun) debbie downer - just trying to make sure that we don't get too limited on the categories...

Debbie wrote: "make it like the list category - any first read book that interests you."

message 743: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments Yz also posted the next quarterly challenge which is based around various holidays - christmas, hannakah etc...

Debbie wrote: "Rossy is setting up a challenge using that idea I think I just saw it as a "Dare You Challenge"."

message 744: by Amber (new)

Amber | 58 comments I need a reason to read some anthologies... Preferably in the monthly challenge because I'm reaching my challenge limits. Though if they were to come up on the random book list, that would be ok too. I guess it wouldn't be random if Yz tried to get them though. :)

Kim (catmommie) Amber wrote: "I need a reason to read some anthologies... Preferably in the monthly challenge because I'm reaching my challenge limits. Though if they were to come up on the random book list, that would be ok ..."

you can always do them as a Boxed Set Challenge. (are we doing those and the Chunkster Challenge in 2011?)

message 746: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments We are, as those were really popular.

message 747: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I really like the read the month challenges, but maybe make a change and read the month in another language - i.e. how the french spell it, or the italians...it would be similar and yet different (and maybe get rid of some of that damn U's!)

message 748: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 2192 comments LOL! I don't know how some of you do it. I tried it once and it was so hard to find the right books to match.
