World Food Day- Could have a book with food in the title or cover or hae characters that are chefs/ in the food industryNavy Day- Have a book where the character is in the navy/armed forces. Has a blue cover
National Dental Hygiene Month- A book that has a creature with fangs : )
I'm kinda new here and I don't know if you had this as suggestions, but I think about colors challenge - you have to read books with covers in specific color or with name of the color in the title =)
Oct 9 is Leif Erikson day. How about something with a Viking or an explorer?October is the eighth month in the old Roman calender. We could read a book in a series with at least eight books or something off the eighth page on a list.

I had an idea for a new challenge that I like to call the Couch Potato Challenge. Read books based on classic or nearly classic television shows. Here are a few tv shows with possible reading choices (I'm really aging myself with some of these):Welcome Back Kotter -- Teacher as a main character
Laverne & Shirley -- Chick Lit or Buddy read
Happy Days -- Motorcycle riding character (in honor of The Fonz)
WKRP in Cincinatti -- Ohio setting, DJ or musician character, or entertainment industry
Gilligan's Island -- Palm tree or beach on the cover
One Day at a Time -- Single mother character
Dallas -- Texas setting, ranch setting
MASH -- war setting, military character
Hawaii 5-0 -- Police officer character, mystery
Golden Girls -- Florida setting
E.R. -- Hospital setting, doctor/nurse character
Green Acres -- Farm setting, green cover
I Love Lucy! -- Romantic comedy, red cover
The Brady Bunch -- Romance between people who already have children
Star Trek -- Science Fiction, space setting, alien character
A-Team -- mercenary character
These are just a few suggestions. Any opinions, suggestions?
ohh i like that...golden girls you could also say older couple (since so many romances are young people); Happy Days (the perpetual bad boy hero)
Does anyone remember The White Shadow? That could be sports related. Then there's Buck Rodgers or Battlestar Gallactica for sci fi/futuristic. Ohh, I could have lots of fun with this! Good idea Daffodil.
Great ideas Daffodil. Laverne & Shirley could also be blue collar workers. Golden girls could also be a yellow cover.
Glad everyone liked the idea. Once I had it, I had tons of possible shows and categories running through my head.
Great Idea! I also have a similar idea using different channels/networks in my challenge idea notebook!
I'm thinking a rock music theme..
Kiss..book with the word Kiss in the title
Journey..Book where the characters travel
The Police..Hero is in law enforcement
Black Sabbath..book with a dark cover, witchcraft
etc...

Ooooh I like it Barb.
Time is on my hands. How about a top ten sexy or romantic locations.
Such as a books with settings where honeymooners go. Hawaii, Paris, etc..
Trip around the world theme. Pick a group of countries and plan a challenge around that.
Character is from that country, setting in that country, country is mentioned, pick a book for each letter in the name of the country.

when I grow up I wanna be...just a single book category where you think back to when you were a kid and pick a book featuring a character doing something you wanted to do back then...it might be something you are doing now or not
Thinking ahead to the holidays: read a book about a miracle
read a book or trilogy about a family saga
You guys are so creative! How about a Soap Opera challenge?
General Hospital - Read a book set in a hospital or about a doctor, or has doctor or hospital in the title
All My Children - Read a book where the main character is a mother or father, or a book that has a child on the cover
Young and the Restless - Read a YA book
Another World - Read a book set in the future, or on another planet, or has "World" in the title
One Life to Live - Read a book with "Life" or "Live" in the title
Bold and the Beautiful - Read a book about a model or an actress
Days of Our Lives - Read a book that spans at least one year in the main character's life
For november - how about a beach / tropical island book for those of us heading into Summer and to help you poor northerners as you head into winter. It could also go into December but I'm assuming that month would be easier to fill.
Other thoughts for November:Guy Fawkes Night - fire or fireworks on the cover or where a central character is a fireman.
Day of the Dead - set in Mexico.
Loy Krathong - choose a book either set in Thailand or on the water.
Oh, and don't forget Movember! - either a book with a man with a moustache on the cover or where a central character is dealing with a male health issue (cancer, depression etc).
There aren't that many interesting days in November as other months, it seems...that is if you don't count - "International Impotence Month"...why is somebody celebrating this? "Married to a Scorpio Support Day" on the other hand, I totally understand (hubby and I are both Scorpios.)Anyways...here are a few ideas:
Thanksgiving - Book set in Colonial America, set during that time of the year, etc.
Election Day - Book with politician as a character
World Television Day - Book with Producers, actors, etc. as characters
Fall theme - Leaves, apples, etc. in cover
On the more obscure Holiday list, there is some interesting ones in November .....Aviation History Month - a book with a pilot or long distance travel
Georgia Pecan Month - set in Georgia or about food
Election Day - having a politician in it
National Day of Listening (11/27) - audio book
In the northern hemisphere November is the end of the harvest. The cornucopia is overflowing with abundance. Silos are full of grain, hogs are led to slaughter, and the smokehouse is full from the hunts.Something to do with the harvest or agriculture would be good.
I haven't read through all these, but I just saw on "Library Thing" I think a Read the 50 States Challenge. You could read a book set in each state or by an author from each state. This could be a yearly challenge.
ohhhh, we've got a 50 states challenge in the Mystery,Crime and Thrillers group (but there's no time limit on it, coz it's scary).
there is one being done as a sub-challenge in the Next Best Book Club...there are a few scary states...RI was hard to find!
Delicious Dee Challenge Addict wrote: "there is one being done as a sub-challenge in the Next Best Book Club...there are a few scary states...RI was hard to find!"Yeah, it's really small but I'll give you a hint. It's on the coast in New England.

I have to earn that Smart-Ass Extraordinaire title on a daily basis somehow. Dee just made it easy today.Love ya' Dee!
oh hahahaha....i take the dog to the dog park and I come back to the witty reparte of jim!!I guess I should have phrased it better (although I did manage to find it driving in the middle of the night)...locating books that have a setting of RI was hard
I think that for both November and December we should have a category for 'Book from your Yearly Challenges' so players are able to work towards the challenges they must complete by 12/31/10.
D.G. wrote: "I think that for both November and December we should have a category for 'Book from your Yearly Challenges' so players are able to work towards the challenges they must complete by 12/31/10."Fantastic idea D.G.!! I have a few I need to get to!!
I just try to work these into the various monthly categories...besides, it wouldn't help those people who don't do the yearly challenges...Valorie wrote: "D.G. wrote: "I think that for both November and December we should have a category for 'Book from your Yearly Challenges' so players are able to work towards the challenges they must complete by 12..."
Delicious Dee Challenge Addict wrote: "I just try to work these into the various monthly categories...besides, it wouldn't help those people who don't do the yearly challenges..."I try to fit them into the monthly categories too but I'm still below pace in a few. I'll need to read almost exclusively from certain challenges if I want to complete by 12/31.
For people that don't have any yearly challenges, Yz can always offer a choice.
ok, but how would that help unless it was in the way of another readers choice type or a generic romance genre? All the people who do yearly challenges are not all missing the same ones.
