Vance | 362 comments I don't know if we will want to choose another stand-alone in fantasy sometime soon, but I came across this list at a site called, fittingly enough, Best Fantasy Books. They have a number of list categories, and here is the "stand-alone" list:

We have already ready their #1, Tigana, and their number #2, American Gods, and a few others, but we might use this list to come up with more ideas if we don't want another series book at some point.

Charles | 248 comments Yeah but some of the titles on the list are dubious (ummmm... the Silmarillion's great and all, and it is standalone, but I feel it's difficult to recommend unless you're a diehard fan of Lord of the Rings) or encountered some of the difficulties within our own poll (some of the recommended "standalone" titles are really part of a series).

Vance | 362 comments True, but it can still be a good resource to sift through.

Oh, and I loved the Silmarillion! :-)

kvon | 563 comments I nominate Anubis Gates (#3). A great intro to Tim Powers.

Edward Brock (edbrock) The War of the Flowers by Tad Williams is a wonderful stand-alone that mixes classic "epic fantasy" with a touch of "urban fantasy". A wild, fun ride.

Kris (kvolk) Lord of Light by Zelanzy is my favorite book of all time. I always recommend reading it.

Mykander | 19 comments Hadn't heard of a few of those, just more to add to the list. Glad to see Talion: Revenant there too, for some reason a lot of people overlook authors who are associated with the major franchise serials (for Stackpole it's Battletech and Star Wars), but he's one of the better serial authors and Talion is an awesome book. He also deserves to die in a fire because it begs to be continued!

Stackpole put Talion: Revenant up as an ebook a bit ago with the promise that if it sold 10000 copies he'd use to proceeds to write the sequel. He's put a lot of his back catalog up, anything he still had the digital rights to and could sell himself. He talks about self publishing and promotion on the podcast Dragon Page: Cover-to-Cover. He's one of the co-hosts. He's mentionedhis promise about Talion a few times, if I remember, he said the sells were getting up there and he might be starting the new book after he finishes some other work. Been a while since I last listened, so not sure where it stands right now.
