Michael Underwood | 116 comments Hello, fellow Swords & Lasers!

My first novel, Geekomancy, will be coming out on July 10th to be featured by Simon & Schuster at San Diego Comic-Con.

The elevator pitch version: Clerks meets Buffy the Vampire the Slayer in an urban fantasy novel about Geekomancers—humans that derive supernatural powers from pop culture.

"If Buffy hooked up with Doctor Who while on board the Serenity, this book would be their lovechild. In other words, GEEKOMANCY is full of epic win." -- Marie Lu, author of the LEGEND trilogy

My publisher is having a special from now through a week or two after release, so the book is only $1.99 for a limited time!

More information at my website: http://michaelrunderwood.com/

Good luck...you had me at Serenity :)
Browncoats recognize :)

Candy (heartlessone) | 10 comments Added to the list, anything with Geek in the title, has to be good.

P. Aaron Potter (paaronpotter) | 585 comments Definitely on my TBR shelf. Mention if you get out LosAngeleswards...

Michael Underwood | 116 comments I'm interviewed at the Once & Future Podcast (run by urban fantasy author Anton Strout) about GEEKOMANCY, why he and Patrick Rothfuss should fight Pokemon-arena-style, our love of conventions, and more.

http://blog.antonstrout.com/2012/07/0...

Michael Underwood | 116 comments GEEKOMANCY is here! The buy links are live, and lots of things are going on.

First, GEEKOMANCY has a cool home as a featured title at Pocket Star: http://allthingsuf.com/2012/07/guest-...

I have a guest post and a giveaway at All Things Urban Fantasy: http://allthingsuf.com/2012/07/guest-...

And, if you're going to be at San Diego Comic-Con, drop by Simon & Schuster's booth (#1128) for a cool d20 sticker Pocket made in support of the book.

Excited author is excited.

Paul Harmon (thesaint08d) | 639 comments See someone else who loves the cover art :)...gotta get that on a shelf and into a print as well :)

Michael Underwood | 116 comments Paul and Carrie!

Glad you like the cover art! I was soo happy when I first saw it.

And a print edition will depend on sales -- I'm hoping the book resonates enough with readers to build demand to that point.

Paul Harmon (thesaint08d) | 639 comments Dear Michael Im pretty sure that crossing Firefly and BSG cuss Words like that will create a geek event horizon sucking all of humanity into a hell Dimension...Not to mention the hell dimension you are now going to for the bad pun?!? of how you named the Golden Retriever :)

Paul, I wish this were Reddit or Facebook or some place where I could upvote/+1/Like your comment. So glad you're enjoying the book!

Michael Underwood | 116 comments If any of you are attending San Diego Comic-Con this week, I have two things to say:

1) I am Jealous. :) I hope you're having a great time.
2) I invite you to visit the Simon & Schuster booth #1128) and check out the Geekomancy swag, which includes d20 stickers and postcards advertising the book and the limited-time price.

Happy conventioning!

Kim | 477 comments I like geeky things and I like cheap books so I picked up a copy.

message 20: by Sky (new)

Sky Corbelli | 352 comments Looks like fun, I'll give it a go. Geeky magic, urban fantasy, and helping out an aspiring author? Win/win/win.

message 21: by Alan (new)

Alan Carr (alanfalcon) Bought it for $2! It looks fantastic, can't wait to have a chance to read it.

message 22: by Paul (new) - rated it 4 stars

Paul Harmon (thesaint08d) | 639 comments So I finished the book, looking forward to the sequel now :) Next time a request for some Stargate, Ninja turtles (ok there was one small one), and Moon Knight references please :D.

message 23: by Mike (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mike | 21 comments I picked up a copy as well. It is on a growing stack of ebooks to read, if ebooks could be stacked.

Michael Underwood | 116 comments Thank you all for the support! I think Stargate and TMNT are pretty likely for appearances in a sequel, but I'll have to read up on more Moon Knight to make that one happen.

Luckily, I think there are enough geek culture jokes to supply a long, long series.

The book is on discount for another week or so -- I'm told the 22nd is likely to be the last day before it re-sets to the normal price of $5.99.

message 25: by Paul (new) - rated it 4 stars

Paul Harmon (thesaint08d) | 639 comments Well Ive already convinced a couple friends to pick t up through my facebook harassment. Im going to try and buy a copy for my friend who lost her job as I think she could use the pick me up and new reading material she doesn't have to pay for :).

Michael Underwood | 116 comments Event reminder: My first ever bookstore event is tonight at McLean & Eakin Booksellers in Petoskey, MI from 7-8:30.

http://www.mcleanandeakin.com/event/m...

Hope to see some folks there! Again, if you say hello at the event and say you're a Sword & Laser member, I have a special prize for you!

message 27: by Derek (new)

Derek | 2 comments I'm currently reading it and it is great geeky read. If tried to get my friends in, but regretfully they need dead tree editions.

As do many of mine

Kirsten Bailey (klbailey) | 82 comments Finished it yesterday! It was lots of fun :) Looking forward to the sequel.

At least one of my friends has added it to his To Read list, but as far as I know he also doesn't have an e-reader.

Same here

message 32: by Michael (last edited Jul 21, 2012 10:21PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Michael Underwood | 116 comments Thanks, everyone!

There are several ways to read without an eReader device, including in-browser methods from B&N and Google, but I know how attached many people are to dead tree editions, being a paper book lover myself.

I use the kindle app for the computer, tell your friend about that. It's free.

Kev (sporadicreviews) | 667 comments This is on my TBR pile. Looking forward to it.

Michael Underwood | 116 comments Hello, all.

If you've read and enjoyed Geekomancy, I highly recommend checking out Libriomancer by my friend Jim C. Hines.

Jim and I managed to both write geeky books with 'mancy' roots without one another knowing, and I think they have a similar appeal while being notably distinct. Happy reading!

message 36: by Carrie (new) - added it

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 67 comments Thanks for the book recommendation, another one to add to the tbr kep an eye out for shelf. :)

Yes. They're subtly similar but, as you say, notably distinct - distinct enough that they don't feel like retreads or copies. Each one has it's own system of magic that is different enough from the other that the books exist well on their on. I could see them existing in the same universe though, which would be fun!

Michael Underwood | 116 comments For everyone heading to WorldCon next week: I'll be there in my guise as the North American Sales & Marketing Manager for Angry Robot Books, but I'm also appearing on some panels.

When in doubt, you can probably find me at the Angry Robot booth.

Please come by some time and say hello!

Michael Underwood | 116 comments Celebromancy, the sequel to Geekomancy, will be coming 7/15/2013.

My editor has it now, and then I'll be doing revisions so we have it ready early enough to go out widely for review.

Also, the audio rights to Geekomancy and Celebromancy have sold to Audible. With luck, Geekomancy should be available for direct transmission via ear-holes soon!

message 41: by Jason (new)

Jason Hough (jasonmhough) | 1 comments Awesome, Michael! I'm looking forward to the audio versions of both.

message 42: by Paul (new) - rated it 4 stars

Paul Harmon (thesaint08d) | 639 comments Thats great But I still want a book for my shelf :)

Michael Underwood | 116 comments Thanks, Paul! I'm doing everything I can to help get it to print, but that call is on the publisher's side at this point.

Also, I had a lot of fun with this interview at Chuck Wendig's blog: http://terribleminds.com/ramble/2012/...

message 44: by Kev (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kev (sporadicreviews) | 667 comments ooh, I didn't know there was a sequel. Cool!
(though I misread the title as Celebimancy... I was thinking magic based on celibacy? How does that fit in with Geekomancy?)

Michael Underwood | 116 comments Book 2 is definitely not Celebimancy - in fact, there is romance, and sexytimes. :)

Celebromancy is the magic of fame and celebrity -- the novel focuses on Ree's involvement in a independent TV production, including an infamously unstable super-star.

Michael Underwood | 116 comments Hello, all!

I'm very excited to announce that Geekomancy is now available in audiobook format:

http://www.audible.com/pd/ref=sr_1_1?...

And as a reminder, the second Ree Reyes book,
Celebromancy, is coming July 15th. The audiobook for that one will likely come out around the same time as the ebook.

Michael Underwood | 116 comments Geekomancy is available as a free read until July 10th through XOXO After Dark:

Paul Harmon (thesaint08d) | 639 comments Ok just pre-ordered celebromancy from Amazon...looking forward to it...your last message reminded me to go look for it :)

My devious plan has worked exactly as intended! ;)

Sophie Anderson (shinimegami23) | 39 comments I just picked up Geekomancy. So far, so awesome! Can't wait to finish this one and read the next one!
