Steampunk Reads discussion
Any Writers among you steampunk Readers? (steampunk source list)

I am a writer myself, and thopugh I have a steampunk short story in the works, I need to do a lot of editing first. I also have some stuff on here that I've started, if anyone wants to looks at it.

Great cover! look forward to reading it :D

NOT for those who are looking for a straight steampunk read. This story has a plot that entwines with the steampunk setting but is nevertheless, at its heart, a kinky BDSM romance with graphic sexual details.

A brilliant researcher, Sofia must unravel the ancient puzzle of the Clockwork Warrior or her career will be in tatters. Yet the tomb of the warrior is in the dangerous city of Byzantium, inside the harem of the Emperor. She knew she’d have to pose as a slave—but not that her “owner” would be the incredibly bossy, gorgeous bodyguard she’s been assigned.
A life of military duty has left Dankyo unprepared for Sofia. He’s never met a woman quite like this. She’s smart and beautiful, and she’s something that he’s finding almost irresistible—despite the way she fights against masquerading as his slave, she’s submissive right down to the bottom of her soul. And that’s bringing out every dominant instinct in his body.
But even as he realizes she’s captured his heart, the city explodes into madness. Surviving seems impossible. Can love and a Dom who will never give up overcome sheer bloody-minded evil?

A little quote from the review:
"This trilogy has been one of the most fascinating BDSM series that I have come across. Shying away from the BDSM-club trope, Cari Silverwood blends BDSM with Steam-Punk in an erotic suspense novel that blew me away. None of these books are easy reads; they are complicated, innovative tales that are unlike anything that I have read in the erotic genre."
Hello! I realize I am very late to this discussion, but what you described as a future England with the mannerisms still in place sounds very much to my ear like the ongoing series by Jonathan Green and Al Ewing called "Pax Britannia"; Green writes about the Magna Britannia empire while Ewing covers a future North American steampunk style. I would greatly recommend it even if only for some ideas of where you could go.
And yes... I admit it. I write, although I'm very new. My first novel is a steampunk/sword-and-sorcery/western/post-apocalyptic mix-up, the first of a trilogy but more books about the world will come. If you or anyone else is ok with it, I'll post the links to where it can be found below. Good luck on your research!

The Wizard That Wasn't
They're both funny and suspenseful, and he does a great job of setting up tragic clashes between different well-intentioned groups.
Since you ask specifically for writers, I've just released my first steampunkish fantasy novel:
Realmgolds
It's secondary-world, so not strictly Victorian, but one of the main characters is named Victory.

You should :-) It's really fast paced, so you won't get bored. I like a bit of alternate history to my steampunk reads, so I wrote in the same manner.

I'm glad to hear people still like vamps. We had so much fun turning Prince Albert undead, thus beginning our alternative history...

It's the first in a series; the next six novelettes are already published as well, and the novel that ties everything together is set for a release in late April.

We took the opposite approach. Unintentional poison. A doctor tries to save Prince Albert with his untested potion, and turns him undead instead. The potion is continually tested and different people get different ones, hence the insanity problem...

I've also written a steampunk short story, Doctor Angel's Last Appointment, which is due to appear in Tales of the Talisman in the fall, and I'm waiting to hear a decision from another magazine about a second short story.
I'm new to Goodreads and publishing and still have a lot to learn, but I'm hoping to make a lot more friends and discovering everything steampunk has to offer.

Sounds like an interesting read, I'll have to check it out =)

but my books are more interesting, I swear!

I'm really glad to have found this group, as I've already collected half a dozen new books from it!

I jumped into writing steampunk about 3 years ago and fell instantly in love with writing in the genre. I've been writing for over 16 years, and I've always loved steampunky things, but I never tried to write steampunk. I read about 8 Verne novel in a few months, watched every steampunky movie I could find, and just immersed myself in all things steamy, much more ravenously than I did before. My first few attempts at writing turned into historical fiction, but then I caught my footing. Now I know I want to write fantastic adventure novels, much like a lot of the popular works of the Victorian era, and add in fantasy elements for color.
If you want to write good steampunk, I suggest choosing exactly which style you want to write (dystopian, gas-lamp fantasy, strict historical, neo-victorian, etc) and then stick to it. Once you have a theme to follow, you can research just what you want to know about. That's what helped me get going.
Hope that helps! Enjoy!!

I really want to read those. Patricia C Wrede is one of my favorite fantasy authors =)
