Sara (vivianstreet) | 25 comments I read this series around 2003 or 2004, and I think there were four books in it at the time. It was at least historical fiction (I don't remember any fantastical elements but there might have been some small ones).

The main character is pretty young in the beginning (preteen?) and he ends up being taken on as a knight's assistant, I think. Maybe this is during the crusades? The main character starts out as a "pagen," but considering when this is set that could encompass a lot of religions. Eventually he joins the knight's religion and becomes a monk? paladin? Cleric? I remember imagining him with a tonsure.

The third or fourth book in the series is told from the viewpoint of a scribe who is assigned to assist the paladin (I feel like he was having trouble reading because of poor vision). The scribe is not impressed AT ALL with this foreigner, but comes to respect him.

Any help you can give would be great! I remember loving this series a lot.

Or, maybe, the character was called "Pagan." Knew that was significant....
