Man transported back in time to same location [s]

The man is on a cruise ship on the medditeranean sea. He was teleporteed back in time to the same location but with no water. He is supposed to save the people that live in this area. I think there was big cats and cubs involved. The storyline follows "John Carter" just no alien lifeforms. This book maybe from mid to late 80's.Any help is appreciated.
