We currently live in Tokyo, Japan. Big fan of middle-grade books myself, and hope to help inspire (my) children to read. And let's be honest, reality is stranger than fiction right now and a good book is always a great escape!
Cheers!

Hello J M and Justin, and welcome to the group! Please both read the notes for authors - you'll see them listed on the front page fairly prominently under this thread.

I hope you enjoy it here; a large number of us also write, so you can ask questions specifically related to writing, or about your own books, in the Author's corner.

More or less everything else is devoted to READING!

Jan Hi, I'm Jan, a retired 3rd grade teacher from Oregon. I still work as a substitute teacher, or did until covid-19. Hope to be back with the students again soon. I love middle grade stories and try to read as many of the current ones as I can, and love discussing them with students. Looking forward to seeing what everyone is reading and talking about.

Hello, Amber here. I am a book-obsessed mother of five book-obsessed children, ages 4-13. I have been discovering lately that some of the best literature out there is really aimed toward this Middle Grade audience, and am eager to find more direction in exploring this "genre." The fact that I have a bunch of kiddos that this is also relevant for is just a bonus lol

Carol Dobson | 21 comments Hi everyone. I am a qualified teacher and librarian from Britain. I have two grandchildren who are French-speaking and I am very involved in helping them talk and read in English. I look forward to finding out ideas and books from this group. I am also an author, having written two historical novels, and a short robot sci-fi story for children and teens set in Albuquerque, and am currently writing a biography.

M.L. Tarpley (mltarpley) | 4 comments Hi everyone! My name is Morgan. (My author pen name is M.L. Tarpley.) I write quirky lower middle grade novels that are set around the world. I love reading newer MG like The Tapper Twins and Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library and revisiting the beloved books of my childhood such as Mr. Popper's Penguins, the American Girl series and The Phantom Tollbooth. My first MG novel will be published this fall.

Hi Carrie! That's awesome! I've been to a bunch of countries too and have written middle grade novels with characters to travel in those countries. How fun! Are your books for MG too? Mine are lower MG.

Welcome, Lindsy! The age range for most of the books we discuss here covers from about 4th to 7th or 8th grade, so hopefully you'll find some good stuff!

C.E. wrote: "9-13"

Right. I usually consider the "middle grade" books I read and we discuss here to be aimed at 9-12. 8 is on the young side, but good readers are there, and some kids will enjoy them up to 13 or 14, but most are probably read by the 9-12 crowd.

Laura Stegman | 1 comments Hi everyone! I joined this group a while ago, but this is my first post, and I'm looking forward to connecting. My debut middle grade novel, Summer of L.U.C.K., will be published in September. It's a contemporary fantasy, which is what I love reading most. Like someone else just said, I love revisiting the books of my childhood, but I'm also a big fan of current MG as well. Glad to find this group!

Mitchel Maree (mitchelmaree) Hi everyone, My name is Mitchel and I'm currently writing a middle grade series. I have four young kids, so I'm also interested in reading middle grade fiction (see how I blamed it on the kids). In reality, I like a good book no matter what genre it is in. I love mystery and suspense for adults, and action, adventure, and mystery for children's stories. Looking forward to joining some discussion and seeing what great reads are out there.

Peter C (pc_reads) | 1 comments Hi. Peter here. I recently joined this group and have been silently following along as I can. I was unaware this Goodreads world even existed until my wife, E.S. Christison, wrote her first book "The Blameless", a middle-grade fantasy released back in July. We have a couple of middle grade kids who enjoy reading and we are always on the lookout for good literature for them to enjoy.

I'm sure you'll both find some good books here, and it will be good to hear what you recommend, too.

Please could you both check out the notes for Author Members, so you don't fall foul of the spam police :) Thanks.

Ian Boyd Hi. My name is Ian Boyd and I'm an Aussie middle grade author from South Australia. I moved to writing in this genre about a year and a half ago and discovered that I have the same reading age level that I had when I was a kid. I can't believe how insightful and honest MG books can be. I only hope that I can add value to the genre with my own writing.

How many times to we have to ask authors to read the guidance and NOT talk about your own book anywhere except the Author section?

JP (good initials btw) Please read the tips for authors, the guidance for authors and every other post we have explaining to authors what constitutes spam and why reading rooms don't like authors spamming them, and then introduce yourself again.

You sound like a really nice chap and you caught me on a bad day. Sorry.

Hi Ian, and welcome to the forum. We really like Aussie MG authors on this forum; we used to have a lot of them (but they all seem to have grown up!)

Have a great time here, and check out Authors Corner to tell us about your book(s), but also let us know what you like to read elsewhere. I'm sure you've some great new books we haven't discovered.

A lot of members here are. But Goodreads is still about reading, so it's best if everybody respects that the groups are not a place to push their books. We have sections for Promotions & Giveaways, and for Read and Review offers, as well as the Authors Corner, where authors can discuss general questions about writing and self-publishing, as well as make a page about their own book(s).

Generally members want to talk about books they've read, or ask for recommendations. :)

On the very first page of this thread basically every single post shows an author talking about their book, so I got the impression that was what was expected.

And seeing as this is the first thread most people who join this group would look at, I'm surprised to receive what feels like a pretty intolerant response to an honest and innocent mistake.

Cheers!

You know, I haven't read the start of this thread before. And you're right, in the old days - eight years ago! It was easier then. So few people wrote it was a quite a novelty. These days, and especially since Amazon bought Goodreads, it seems everyone wants to promote their books to all the readers, all the time.

Thanks for pointing that out. I don't think there's much we can do about that. But the little pop-up when you post does say:
'Authors: please only use the Authors or Offers areas for promoting your books.' And so does the introduction to the group on the front page.

Sorry to have welcomed you in such an intolerant manner.

Rosie I’m gonna introduce myself! I’m Rosie, I’m 19 and I love to read middle grade bc it’s something I get to share with my little brother and it makes me rlly happy to get to enjoy it with him :)) so I’m glad I found this book group to find great new reads!! I am not an author and I have no intention in writing I simply enjoy reading... For me, finding a great book is when someone recommends it to me bc they enjoyed it, not because they wrote it and are trying to promote it so if you have a great book to recommend let me know! I would love to give your favorite middle grade a shot 🤍

Some of my favorite MG books of all time are "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory," "Charlotte"s Web," "The Railway Children," and "High Courage," but I've recently read some great new novels like "Asha and the Spirit Bird," "The Canyon's Edge," and "Dress Coded." I look forward to being a part of this great group!

Thanks. It's an intense job, but very rewarding. A lot of the kids I get just have never had anyone take them seriously before. I love when I get the new, mad kid who walks in, "I'm not supposed to be here!" And I say, "Great! Then we've got the same goal. Getting you out of here." A year later, I start talking about moving back to his old school, and he's like, "Whoa, hey, wait! Not so fast!"
