Great Middle Grade Reads discussion

NEW MEMBERS: Hi everyone, I've joined the GMGR group. I'm ......
Hello Kelly and welcome! I hope you enjoy it here. You can always check back on books we've read in the past in the archive threads, too.
Just joined GMGR and, in looking over recent MG books I've read, It Wasn't Me by Dana Alison Levy and Peter Brown's The Wild Robot Escapes really stand out. Very glad this group exists and I'm looking forward to finding out about some great reads I might've missed.

Welcome, Pat! I've been a member here since the ark was found, but I'm still finding great reads every day!
For info, when you name a book, if you're using the website you'll see a little green note above the text box you type in, saying 'add book/author. If you put your title in there and search for it, you can link to its Goodreads page.
If you're using the app, you can do same by putting a square bracket [ followed by the word book: then the title of the book and closing the square bracket. If you get the wrong book you could always ask someone for help in your post (i.e. a mod). People don't seem to care if their book has the same title as someone's else's these days. (sigh)
Hope that's helpful.
I like the sound of [book:The Wild Robot Escapes |34219841].
This is bizarre... Goodreads seems not to be adding its own hyperlinks today. I'll check back later.

Aha. Will note in the future. That hyperlink wouldn't work only because you were looking for it....like the ding that goes away when you get to the mechanic. I see it now. Thanks for the tip.

I tried redoing it today - still not linking. I'm doing fine with links elsewhere. The book is there... strange. (makes X files noise)

Hi. I'm Hayley. I've just joined this group and I'm new to Goodreads, so still unsure what I'm doing and have no Goodread friends! My debut children's novel Labyrinth Junction is out in April........ I'm excited but also VERY apprehensive! I'm also a primary school teacher, so always looking for great children's book. I'm an avid reader and would love suggestions for great reads. Lovely to find this group. Hayley

Hi Hayley and welcome. You'll soon have plenty of Goodreads friends, I'm sure.
Make sure to read the Guidance for Authors, as it's important not to act spammy even though you're naturally just enthusiastic.
We're a pretty laid-back group, so just relax and settle in!

A message to Dawn Kopman Whidden - please would you read the Guidance for Authors and then introduce yourself without spamming us with your books :) Thanks.
Welcome to all our new members from your most elusive Mod :D. I’ll be back to participate more fully in February; I’m traveling this month and have little time for the internet (and only occasional connections).
Hi, everyone! My name is Christian McKay Heidicker. I'm an author with two YA books on the shelf and a few MGs on the way. (I won't include any links so as not to waft that spammy scent :))
MG is hands down my favorite genre. Some of my *recent* faves include El Deafo, Good Masters! Sweet Ladies!, All's Faire in Middle School, and, y'know, like, a hundred others.
It's wonderful to meet you. I'm so happy this group exists. <3

Hi GMGR group. My name is Benjamin (Ben). I enjoy a great outdoors lifestyle down under in New Zealand. I was an avid reader of middle grade books when I was younger and now am an out-loud reader of middle grade books to my kids (which is just as fun!).As well as being on the lookout for great books to read, I also have just re-released a book I wrote many years ago, Dave's Timely Adventures. Now that my kids are the right age to hear the story I was inspired to give it a good dust off, new cover, have illustrations done, and put it out there again.
Hi Christian!
Hi, Benjamin! I’m in your country right now—you have some lovely mountains, but I don’t think much of the sand flies :D
Having your story to read to your own kids is great. Mine were mostly too old for my kids books by the time I got them written :p

Welcome Benjamin! Always good to know we've got some kids reading the books here (even if second hand)!
We used to have an antipodean updating us with regular book news from Down Under. Feel free to take up the reins from her.
Accessing BOTM reads may be difficult, as most of them are US published, but feel free to nominate ones we might have to chase up a bit.

Hi Rebecca. You must be in the South Island, that's the worst for sand flies and best for mountains. I'm sure you're checking out Milford Sound etc, but if you're up near the top of the South Island the Nelson Lakes area is a very beautiful and not as touristy as the other hiking areas.
Yes it's great having the kids as a sounding board! (and fans)

Thanks Jemima. I'll definitely check out the book of the month reads. At present, I'm mainly reading UK and US middle grade books to the kids (Harry Potter et al) But there are some great New Zealand books that I'll be happy to suggest.
Benjamin, you got it! South Island, and the sand flies were worst at Milford Sound. We’ll be back there next month to hike the Milford Track, and I don’t expect them to be any better then :). But it’s a trade-off, and at least there are no mosquitoes.
We’ll be checking out the area around Nelson Lakes later this summer, then heading up to North Island.
Bring on the NZ titles—maybe I can check some of them out while we are here!

Hey! I'm Emma, and I love to read, especially middle grade. I would love to get a book published someday, but right now i'm just getting through school.
Hi, Emma! Getting through school is a good plan :). If you love to write, do it whenever you have a chance, but don’t worry about making something you can publish. Just keep practicing!
I look forward to hearing about your favorite reads!

Hi. My name is Gideon. I recently published an MG/YA book, which I am happy to have completed before our twin boys arrive. I figured a group like this could point me toward other meaningful books to read them.

And congratulations on the twins! If by “arrived” you mean “get born,” you might be a ways off from time to read them MG books :). But the joy of pre-verbal infants is that you can read them ANYTHING and they will love the sound of your voice and be soothed. I read my newborn nephew Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (in the original Middle English) long ago when I was a grad student :).
But this is the place to come for MG recommendations. Take a look at our Book of the Month selections (and the nominations thread for each) for tons of ideas.

Hi, I'm Ron Fulleman. I work both at being a substitute Teacher Librarian and an author of High-Low books. I'm here to get a better idea of what's popular in order to recommend books to students, both in general MG books, as well as MG High-Low books. I find there's a lot of kids who just don't like to read or who can't because they're either English Learners or struggling readers for their grade level. Because I don't enjoy reading Dystopian/Sci-Fi/Futuristic books, I'm hoping that this platform will help me become more acquainted with a wider variety of books.
Hi, Ron! I take it High-Low means high interest, low reading level? Feel free to start a thread discussing those and looking for recommendations (I vaguely recall some discussion of same a long time ago, but if it doesn’t come up on a search go ahead and start one).
Hi Emma, Gideon and Ron! Great to have your around. I'm taking a breather from MG at present, but I drop in from time to time. I hope the members here can help you find the type of books you're looking for!
Hello, All!My name is Mary Alampi. I teach English Language Arts and Reading. (I may never get out of middle school, at this rate!) I love middle grades and YA books.
Hi Mary and welcome! Good to have you aboard. Looking forward to hearing what you and your students recommend. :)
Hello, My name is Ursula. I teach 4th grade and enjoy reading middle-grade books so I can help my students pick books they love. Hoping to read the monthly books posted here and maybe join a challenge.
Hello group, My name is Andrea and I have recently joined the staff at our local library focusing more on the kids side of things. My leader has a good grip on the kids picture books, but not as much on the middle grade books and series, so I joined this group to get more involved in that area. Like Ursula said before me, I want to join the monthly books and possibly other challenges to read books I may not pick otherwise. Thank you for being here to join!
Hi Ursula and Andrea and welcome to the group. We cater for a wide variety of tastes, even in middle grade reading matter!
I hope you get plenty of ideas here, and let us know what your students like to read, too.

Hi all. Don't know if this reaches the right place but I have my first middle grade novel coming out 18th April. it's called 'Curse of the Mudchalk Devil' for 9-14 yr olds but a good read for adults too. it's on Goodreads somewhere but didn't seem to make it to the April release schedule. Hope i get a reply to this message. Cheers. Phil Lanzon
Hello Phil and welcome to the group.
You appear to be new to Goodreads groups, so the first thing you should do is to check our rules for authors.
You’ll find you have just committed the cardinal sin of spamming us with your book!
Please would you edit your message to say who you are and maybe why you like MG books. You can tell us all about your book in the section “Authors Corner”.
I’m sure when you’ve read our ‘Gentle advice for authors’ you’ll understand.

Hello, I'm Martin! I love middle grade and YA books. I post a book podcast over on youtube called MartinInAMask. Although I am a young boy I love having structured debates and constructive discussion on books.

Oops, just got Jamimas note. Really sorry guys, I had no idea of the format here so imagine I didn’t send those emails and we can start over. I guess I was too anxious to get going.I have been interested in MG for over twenty years now. I have read a Large amount, not so much on child psychology, but in the way they think and act and fit into or out of society. I have a huge empathy for what they go through.
Apologies once again. Phil.
Hello everyone!Looks like a great group. My son is looking for a new MG series that is fantasy/ science fiction based. Any suggestions?
Michael wrote: "Do you have a favorite book, Martin? I'll go checkout your podcast! Great job!"Let him read the Beyonders series by Brandon Mull. Although it is MG it is complex like some YA fantasy. Im on the second book currently and it is PERFECT! OH no, I meant to reply to:

Hello to all our new members! Michael, feel free to start a new thread asking for recommendations for your son--the more info you provide (what grade, what else has he liked) the more likely someone is to come up with his next favorite series.
Hi,I'm happy to find this group! I am embarking on writing a middle grade novel. This group is a wonderful cross section of books to read as research....and enjoyment, as I usually like middle grade themes. Glad to be here!
Hi! I'm a new member as of this moment :)My name is Sarah Fenlon Falk and I'm the author of the fantasy series: The Sage Cheval for upper middle grade readers!
I'll be releasing the first 3 books in the series this fall.
I look forward to hearing more from the group!

My name is Kelly Settlage from Ohio. I just recently started teaching 5th grade this year and am looking for ideas of books to use in my classroom. Excited to read Fish in a Tree as I have heard many good things about it.
