Monster Books (monsterbookuk) | 1 comments Hi! We are Monster Books, an independent children's and MG fiction publisher based in Oxford in the UK. We are relaunching in Spring next year (2018) and currently are putting together our catalogue of titles for print.

We have a sister company, Quarto Translations, and have partnered up with the Golden Egg Academy to sponsor a The Quarto Translations/Golden Egg Academy Diversity Awards which aim to encourage diversity in books and publishing in general.

These Awards are aimed at encouraging diverse writers, diverse stories and those aspiring to be editors, as well as providing opportunities for writers who would not normally be able to benefit from the expertise at GEA.

Our aim for our brand relaunch is to publish translated gems from around the world that would not normally be printed by other publishers, while at the same time engaging children and MGs that don't normally like to read with literature that they may not be able to find elsewhere.

We have joined this forum as we would love to hear your ideas on MG books and diversity in publishing in general so we can know best how to meet the needs of readers and authors alike today! We want to learn more about what will MG readers and also what parents feel is missing in their kids' libraries!

Welcome, Monsters - an appropriate name for Horror Week on Goodreads!

We are happy for you to discuss favourite books anywhere, but to help our author-members not transgress the spamming rules, please talk about their specific books in the Authors' Corner. Thanks.

You'll find lots of great threads in our Discussion pages, from What is MG, to recommendations for books set in Germany that aren't to do with wars!

Justine Laismith (justinelaismith) | 348 comments Welcome, Monster Books! Oxford is not too far from me, I will pop in and visit when you open next Spring. Look forward to it! I can already tell you that there are many American books missing in the Oxfordshire libraries, as I've not been able to participate in the BOTM on many occasions.

Betty Wells | 1 comments My name is Betty. I teach 5th grade and I'm looking for some good reads for my higher level readers.

message 1709: by Carmel (new)

Carmel | 72 comments You’ll find inspiration here! For a start, I’m reading a brilliant new fantasy aimed at Middle Grade readers- Nevermoor. The trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend.

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
Hi, Betty! There are some great books we've discussed here. You might take a look at the BOTM lists, for one thing, since we have discussions on those. 5th-graders who read well can be challenging, since their interests haven't always caught up to their reading skills (I know. I was one of those kids).

W. Scott (ladystar) | 2 comments Hello everyone,

My name is W. Scott. I wrote my first MG book in 2010 and I've recently put some time and effort into learning to use Goodreads properly, so here I am.

I've gotten some truly useful reviews from some of the members of this site, some of whom I'm sure are part of this group. I'm looking forward to meeting you all and learning more about the world of middle-grade books.

Hi Russ and welcome. Always nice to have more author/readers around, especially when looking for books for their kids! Sometimes we get more views of what we like, rather than what the kids like, although both are invaluable.
Have a great time here (and can I direct you to the guidance for authors while using the group, too).

J.W. Elliot (jwelliot) | 8 comments Hi all,
I am new to the group. I am a professional historian with closet life as a writer of YA and MG fiction. I love Lois Lowry, Gary D. Schmidt, Jack Gantos, Christopher Paul Curtis, and Richard Peck.

I have three fiction books published now, but only one MG.
I'm looking forward to participating on this group.
Cheers,
James

Welcome, James! You've listed some of my favorite MG writers, too :) Do you write historical fiction? I don't see much of that showing up on the new book shelf, but it remains my favorite MG genre.

message 1721: by J.W. (new)

J.W. Elliot (jwelliot) | 8 comments Hi Rebecca,
I do write historical fiction. I have a historical/paranormal entitled Somewhere in the Mist, I just released, but it is YA. I am drafting an MG called Color Blind that deals with racism in 1980s Oklahoma. And I have a contemporary MG called The Miserable Life of Bernie LeBaron. I always draw on my training as a historian for my stories. Most of them are set in either the real or imagined past.

Of the authors I listed above, I think my favorite book is Richard Peck's A Long Way from Chicago. I think Mrs. Dowdel is one of the most endearing and humorous characters I have ever read.

I love MG. It is so fun to write and to read.

I completely agree :)

I'm not sure about historical/paranormal, but I look forward to seeing the Oklahoma book.

Janete on hiatus due health issues Hello, everybody!

I'm a former middle-grade teacher and I love to reading! I'm brazilian from Rio de Janeiro and learning English by myself. So, sorry for my poor English. I love children, tweens and teens books and I'm improving my English by reading these kind of books that I love so much.

message 1725: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
Welcome, Janete! Your English looks pretty good, and I think reading kids' books is a great way to work on it--I do the same to work on my Spanish (except I haven't worked my way up to middle grade yet--I'm still on "easy readers").

Welcome, Janete! My Portuguese is appalling, and I can't even make that understood in Rio! Wonderful city, though - I loved it when I visited :)

message 1729: by Erin (new)

Erin (erinlovescats) Hi! I'm Erin...a bookworm and the mom of a slightly reluctant 12 year old reader.

I'm hoping this group can help me find some books that my son will enjoy alone and some that we can have fun reading together. He recently devoured the Erin Hunter Warrior books but is "kinda over them" now...we are currently reading Puddlejumpers and having fun with that.

I'll be thread stalking and hopefully I can get him to join in on the monthly reads!

I also loved Grandma Dowdel and used A Long Way From Chicago to teach my middle grade students. As they said, Grandma did bad things for good reasons.

message 1731: by Emily (new)

Emily | 13 comments Hi Erin! I have a soon-to-be 15 yo boy who was an avid reader until about that age. Here are some of our favorites:

The Overland Chronicles by Susanne Collins
The Eighth Day trilogy by Dianne K. Salerni
The Amulet series (graphic novels) by Kazu Kibuishi
Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Takes (nonfiction graphic novels) by Nathan Hale

Welcome Erin! You'll find a lot of books suitable for your son here, I think - some of which are by indie authors, so check out places like the read 4 review as well as the other discussion threads.

message 1733: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jennifercarmela) | 2 comments Hi all! My name is Jennifer and I teach ELA in a middle school. I joined this group since the majority of my reading lately has been middle grade and YA literature. I like knowing what my students are reading so we can have meaningful discussions and to make sure they understand what they have read (and, of course, to make sure they actually read the book). I also joined this group to get new ideas for books my students might be interested in and to help keep up with newer releases.

Hi Erin! Hi Jennifer! Lots of great suggestions here.

I think I vaguely remember a thread once about books for reluctant readers. I think my son went from the Warriors to Brian Jacques--a much higher reading level, but a similar appeal. From there it was straight to JRR Tolkien.

Natalie Hi, I'm Natalie. I'm currently a stay-home mom of four kids, but in my past life I was a civil engineer. I just really enjoy reading young adult and middle grade books. I also read a lot of science and science fiction, and I've considered a career change into teaching science, but not until my youngest is in school.

Welcome, Satoko! Middle Grade fiction is a great way to work on language skills (I read in Spanish, but I'm still at the "easy-to-read" books :) ).

I hope you find lots of interesting books here.

I hope you enjoy it here!

message 1748: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (bookswithcheryl) Hi, everyone!

I'm Cheryl. I'm an avid reader, writer, new mom, and former teacher from Long Island, NY. I love MG books, especially mysteries. I'm looking forward to reading some of my favorites with my son eventually. We're still in the Goodnight Moon stage right now (he's only 8 months old), but we'll get there someday!

I've been a silent member of this group for a couple of years and I really appreciate all the great book recs. This group has been a great resource for me as I've been working on my own MG book. I decided it was time to finally introduce myself. So, greetings, nice to meet you all.
