Hi Everyone, I was so delighted to discover this group! Middle grade fiction is my favorite genre to read and to write. I am an English professor at Bucknell University where I teach Victorian lit and Young Adult Fiction -- I sneak middle grade books into both as often as I can! I am also the author of The Rosemary Spell (HMH/Clarion Books 2015), which is a middle grade novel in part about the love of middle grade novels. I hope some of you may have read it.

Hi everyone. Just joined the group. I work in the legal profession by day and have written a MG fantasy fiction book which was recently published. Writing is great way to get away from the real world for a little while into a land of unicorns and dragons. Fun to be a kid again, if only in my mind (and my books). Hi everyone. I am a wife, mother (empty nest), attorney (retired) and author. I live in Nashville. I have read dozens of 2017 MG debut books and love to talk about them and their authors. I wrote my book as 'adult literary' then FSG told me it was for 10 year olds and I have never been so happy to land in a group. The kids, the teachers, the librarians, the other writers. All inspirational. Idealistic and big hearted.

Are you asking about all the GMGR authors I reference? Well, I know my books and Jemima's are sort of not-completely-middle-grade. I won't speak for others, but clicking on anyone's name (like Corabel's) will take you to their GR page, and you can see what they've written.

My book has fantasy and adventure, but because it doesn't have the language, romance themes or violence I have put it in the middle grades category. It was written with the idea that children should be able to have a book with fun, excitement and adventure and still enjoy being a child. Hope that makes sense.

Hi Corabel, WELCOME! :) I write MG historical fiction. My novel is about my mother's experience in Hiroshima during WWII.

Hi all I am new to the group! I joined mostly for my children. I have a almost 6 year old and a 3 year old. I am trying to first start reading aloud little earlier chapter books to my kids and progress quickly to middle age. So far we have only consistently read picture books. I mostly feel like its a great way to develop a love for reading. Also I just remembered when I was about 12 my little sister and I would read books aloud to one another all summer long. Something about it speaks to me. I also want to develop their vocabulary.

Hi Erica. Welcome to the group! I think it is such a great thing for you to read out loud to your children. I remember reading to my children when they were young but I thought that was considered old fashioned. You should be able to find a lot of good books here. Enjoy reading with your children, and have them read to you as they get old enough. You will all enjoy the time together and have great memories to share.

Reading aloud to kids is NOT old-fashioned! It's a necessary part of them learning to read, not to mention a great time to cuddle together. We read to ours until the oldest started HS and homework interfered.

I agree with Rebecca. We started reading to our daughter when she was only a few months old and we still read to her every night (she is 8 now). It helped her develop a great love for books. She started reading at 3 because she had been read to so much. Now, she reads at a 5th grade level and writes stories like a fiend. We will keep reading to her for as long as she lets us. ❤️ And that is why I a, so interested in Middle Grade books now!

I suspect that reading aloud to kids is the only way to teach them to listen. Listening skills are as important as reading, writing and arithmetic - and talking. So keeping reading to your kids, please!!

yes that is awesome. I like to listen to books aloud sometimes also. my daughter is old enough to appreciate character development so I knew it was time.

Even now we sometimes read aloud in the car (well, my husband does. I get carsick). The books are more apt to be Roadside Geology books or local history than stories, but still! It can really help when the road is long.
