Hello all,My name is Morgan. I'm an undergrad working towards a K-8 teaching certification in Maine. I'm looking for the "must reads" for students K-8 as I anticipate having my own classroom library in a few years.
Hello Morgan and L.P. I'm sure you'll both gets lots of ideas and make many friends here. Welcome!
Welcome, Morgan & L.P. I hope you'll join in our discussions, and feel free to start topics you want to talk about!
Hi everyone, M.J. here. I'm a children's librarian just looking to hang out with people who love middle grade books as much as I do :-)
Welcome, MJ! We are definitely a group of people who love MG books, and there are a lot of good books discussed here.

Thanks, Jemima!
Hello everyone,I'm Susan. I am a mother that sets up book fairs at my kids' elementary and middle schools. I love talking books, especially with kids. It is my personal challenge to find a book that they will love.

Hi Everyone, I was so delighted to discover this group! Middle grade fiction is my favorite genre to read and to write. I am an English professor at Bucknell University where I teach Victorian lit and Young Adult Fiction -- I sneak middle grade books into both as often as I can! I am also the author of The Rosemary Spell (HMH/Clarion Books 2015), which is a middle grade novel in part about the love of middle grade novels. I hope some of you may have read it.Best,
Virginia
Hi Virginia! Welcome to the group. It'll be interesting to see how you comment on our other threads, especially the ones about defining what should and should not be in Middle Grade books.
Always glad to have Moms on board, Kristin. You must be rushed off your feet with three boys to care for! Although I may have interpreted the 'three' incorrectly!
We've lots of recommendations around here, and we'd love to hear what great reads your readers found, too!

Welcome, Kristin! Maine is a lovely place, and we're hoping to spend a little more time there sometime soon (tried to get my kid to apply to colleges there, but no go).

Hi Deanie and welcome. You'll find lots of fellow-authors here, and in order not to swamp the readers for whom GMGR is provided, please read the Guidance for Authors! We've a place for READ 4 REVIEW to offer free copies for review, which many of our members use when the books look interesting :)
There's also another post to help you find your way around, especially if you're new to Goodreads Groups. So settle in, participate, and enjoy yourself!

Hi everyone. Just joined the group. I work in the legal profession by day and have written a MG fantasy fiction book which was recently published. Writing is great way to get away from the real world for a little while into a land of unicorns and dragons. Fun to be a kid again, if only in my mind (and my books). I am looking forward to meeting and talking with others who enjoy writing and reading middle grade books.
Hi BJ and welcome. I know what you mean about these fantasy worlds. I sometimes wonder about myself since I'm usually engrossed in fantasy worlds! Have a great time here.
Thanks so much. I appreciate it! 🙂
Welcome BJ and Deanie!
As for losing ourselves in fantasy worlds...mine don't always have unicorns, but all my books are fantasy worlds in which I can lose myself.

Hi everyone. I am a wife, mother (empty nest), attorney (retired) and author. I live in Nashville. I have read dozens of 2017 MG debut books and love to talk about them and their authors. I wrote my book as 'adult literary' then FSG told me it was for 10 year olds and I have never been so happy to land in a group. The kids, the teachers, the librarians, the other writers. All inspirational. Idealistic and big hearted.
Welcome, Corabel! I love how you found your book was MG! Many of us here have just written the books we wanted to write, and find that they fit MG as well as anything. So you're in good company.
Michelle wrote: "Can you give us a list of the books? I'd be interested to hear which ones. 😃"
Are you asking about all the GMGR authors I reference? Well, I know my books and Jemima's are sort of not-completely-middle-grade. I won't speak for others, but clicking on anyone's name (like Corabel's) will take you to their GR page, and you can see what they've written.

Omg! Lol! I must have been REALLY tired when I wrote that. 😂 Of course I can actually use the Goodreads features and look them all up myself. Seriously, I'm dying from how lame a question that was. My apologies. I think I had "mommy brain" at the time. 😂

It happens to the best of us! Though with my kids both out of HS now, I'll have to find a new excuse...old age, I guess.

Welcome, Corabel! How great to land in a group like that. I wish someone would tell me what my books are!
My book has fantasy and adventure, but because it doesn't have the language, romance themes or violence I have put it in the middle grades category. It was written with the idea that children should be able to have a book with fun, excitement and adventure and still enjoy being a child. Hope that makes sense.

As Rebecca says above - it does sound like they fit in with ours - more or less MG :D

Hi all I am new to the group! I joined mostly for my children. I have a almost 6 year old and a 3 year old. I am trying to first start reading aloud little earlier chapter books to my kids and progress quickly to middle age. So far we have only consistently read picture books. I mostly feel like its a great way to develop a love for reading. Also I just remembered when I was about 12 my little sister and I would read books aloud to one another all summer long. Something about it speaks to me. I also want to develop their vocabulary.
Hi Erica. Welcome to the group. I'm sure you'll get a lot of great ideas for helping your youngsters progress their reading.
Hi Erica. Welcome to the group! I think it is such a great thing for you to read out loud to your children. I remember reading to my children when they were young but I thought that was considered old fashioned. You should be able to find a lot of good books here. Enjoy reading with your children, and have them read to you as they get old enough. You will all enjoy the time together and have great memories to share.
Reading aloud to kids is NOT old-fashioned! It's a necessary part of them learning to read, not to mention a great time to cuddle together. We read to ours until the oldest started HS and homework interfered.
I agree with Rebecca. We started reading to our daughter when she was only a few months old and we still read to her every night (she is 8 now). It helped her develop a great love for books. She started reading at 3 because she had been read to so much. Now, she reads at a 5th grade level and writes stories like a fiend. We will keep reading to her for as long as she lets us. ❤️ And that is why I a, so interested in Middle Grade books now!
I suspect that reading aloud to kids is the only way to teach them to listen. Listening skills are as important as reading, writing and arithmetic - and talking. So keeping reading to your kids, please!!
Richelle wrote: "Reading aloud is one of the best things I have done for my kids educationally. It has enriched their vocabs more than any curriculum. I like to listen to books aloud sometimes also. my daughter is old enough to appreciate character development so I knew it was time.

Welcome Lilyn! Glad to hear that your 8 year old gets read to every day. What a treat for everyone. I've just recently joined the group, and think there are a lot of great people here. The group also started a Facebook page, (the link is somewhere in the group listing, not sure what it is right off.). Again, welcome and Have a great day! 🙂
Welcome, Lilyn!
Even now we sometimes read aloud in the car (well, my husband does. I get carsick). The books are more apt to be Roadside Geology books or local history than stories, but still! It can really help when the road is long.

Hi! I'm a middle school english teacher which means I spend plenty of time reading middle school books and trying to keep up on what books I need to add to my classroom library.
Hello and welcome. I'm another who often teaches middle school and loves finding students as excited about books as I am.
Newbie alert. I'm a mother of 4, GP by day author by night or any other bits of time that land in my lap. I read a fair bit of non-fic but love fiction too. Wish I could read more - hand me a desert island someone, please. Or a map- the self-help option, I guess.
Hello, I'm CJ. While I do dip into other genres, MG is definitely my happy place, with tastes that run to fantasy, adventure, and mystery. I've already joined the A-Z Challenge for 2017 and am looking forward to everyone's remarks and recommendations.
Hello, Lilyn (although I saw you were here when you first arrived), Alison and CJ.
Hop you all enjoy it here - I see you're already joining in :)
