Hi Denis and welcome! Watching HP movies is a great way of passing the time. So is writing. Must do some writing....

message 1502: by Denis (new)

Denis Lipman (prodigaltourist) Thanks Jemima, but I'd rather watch movies than write –– it's a lot easier!

Cheers

Denis

PS. Reading is good, too, any recent recs?

Dixie Goode (pandorasecho) | 177 comments I just read a new book, or at least new to my library, about a boy trapped in paintings for 500 years, lots of fun footnotes about artists and fun to read while using google images. It was a pretty good story but had a bit of the main character lying to her parents and setting up a weekend trip to a fake destination that some parents might want to at least be aware of.

Oh the title was Behind The Canvas

message 1504: by Denis (new)

Denis Lipman (prodigaltourist) Love the premise, Dixie. I'll check it out.

Cheers

Denis

Hello everyone,
My name is Simona and I'm a reference librarian. I welcome great book suggestions :)

Hi Simona and welcome to the group. You'll find plenty of discussions about our favourite books here!

Welcome, Simona!

Thanks to Jemima, I recently read Murder Is Bad Manners, which I heartily enjoyed. It is a murder mystery with a corpse or two, so some might think not appropriate for younger kids, but I liked it a lot.

I didn't recognise that - and then I realised it's the first in a series where I jumped into the middle.

message 1509: by Denis (new)

Denis Lipman (prodigaltourist) From what I've read so far sound wonderfully reminiscent of E B's famous Five etc. Sounds like a fun read to me. And set in a more innocent time. Nothing wrong with that.

Cheers

Denis

Dixie Goode (pandorasecho) | 177 comments Yes, on Narnia, at least the first book, in the group archives BOTM for one of the summer months 2014 June or July

message 1513: by Denis (new)

Denis Lipman (prodigaltourist) The Railway Children, if you want something classic, and my daughter loved it, and so did I.

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
Welcome Patricia! We have a lot of threads about different kinds of books, but feel free to start one that focuses on your daughter's interests. Something like "books for a 4th grade girl who likes horses and carnivorous insects."

Yup. Your review of the 3rd book or something piqued my interest, and being mildly OCD about such, I hunted up the first book.

B.S. Gibbs (bsgibbs) | 6 comments Hi,

I recently joined this group and am finally saying hi.

I am a mother of two children and an author of a children's fantasy series. By day, I am an attorney with a focus on legal research, writing and problem solving. I particularly like to research old, but still good law (court cases from the 1800s and early 1900s, etc.) (I am not a litigator).

I love fantasy stories, and all things medieval. My children are avid readers and are involved in all sorts of outside activities, such as gymnastics, dance, Tae Kwon Do, singing, and scouts.

As a kid, I would always read the assigned novel the day I received it, instead of just the 10-20 required pages, even if it meant not sleeping. My daughter follows in my footsteps in that regard.

I look forward to participating here.

B.S. Gibbs

Welcome, BS! It depended on the novel whether I read it the day I got it. If there was a horse in it, no problem!

B.S. Gibbs (bsgibbs) | 6 comments Jemima,
Yes, there were some books that I did not read that way (or at all). One was the Bridge of Toko-Ri.

Elizabeth White | 25 comments Hello from the UK everyone.

Please ignore the laughter lines - MG books have always been my favourite read and I'm so pleased to have discovered a source of new titles. I don't use the excuse that I'm on my way to my second childhood, because I'm quite happy to admit that I never really left my first.

I suppose it would be a bit weird not to admit that I write - but I'll save any more for the appropriate threads. What I really want to do is share my favourite reading experiences with like-minded people, and gain some more - so my thanks for the opportunity.

Hope you enjoy it here - check out our Books of the Month as examples.

Elizabeth White | 25 comments Thanks, Jemima - I've already downloaded Magyk (I'd not heard of it before - which may not be a recommendation!)

Now is the time to confess that I only buy paper versions if I know I shall want to read the book again - and then I take in the whole pleasure of reading.

It's okay--I followed you! And if it's any consolation, I hadn't heard of it either--and I work at the library, and actually make some effort to pay attention to the new books and popular series.

I thought I understood... but I'm across the Pond from you, and there's always a chance of mistakes.
The Septimus Heap series I'd heard a lot about, so I guess if you haven't, Rebecca, it's British!

Dixie Goode (pandorasecho) | 177 comments I don't remember when, but years ago, while we were into Harry

Hello S. W., my name is Otter. I am a clerk in a middle school library. I love my work! I am always in search of new books to recommend to our librarian to order. The challenging part is finding "age appropriate" books.

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
Hi Otter, hi Joy! Welcome to the group.

Otter, I hope we can have lots of good discussions about what is appropriate for the middle school age kids. They seem to often have a rather inflated idea of their maturity :D (I work at the public library, where we can steer, but not limit).

message 1541: by Jemima (new)

Jemima Pett | 1492 comments Mod
Hi Otter and welcome. What age is Middle School, for those of us outside the US?

(Maybe we should have a frequently asked questions thread?)

message 1542: by Dixie (new)

Dixie Goode (pandorasecho) | 177 comments Middle school is usually 6, 7 and 8th grade with a four year high school

Or

Jr. High is 7, 8 and 9th with a three year high school

First grade starts about at age six, and kids may turn 7 on average, graduate from 12th grade at 17 or 18 or 19. So think of sixth graders as 11/12

message 1543: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
Excellent explanation, Dixie!

Basically, our school system tries to quarantine kids when they are going through that really awful transition to adolescence.

Hello Dan and Peter, and welcome.

Peter, you might like to read our guidance for authors and post an offer to Read 4 Review in the Read 4 Review section :)

Dan do you read scifi suitable for MG? Finding suitable books is a regular question at the Space Opera group, and I would make it a theme of our Book of the Month one time if I felt there was enough around that's suitable and accessible to all.

message 1547: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
Welcome Dan and Peter.

And I'll second Jemima's question. Though by Jr. High I just considered any SF to be suitable (that was back in the day when everyone by Heinlein was as chaste as the driven snow). It would be great to find some good SF that's aimed at younger kids but isn't just goofy.

I think I'll start a thread on MG Scifi, if there isn't one already.

Oh yes, it's in the Library section!

Can we move the scifi conversation to there, please?
