Hello. My name is Sarah Ackerman. I'm a 5th grade teacher, and I'm looking for great recommendations for my classroom library, and student-selected reading time. I'm thankful to have found this group!

Hi. I'm Tabitha. I'm the mother of an eight-year-old and an enthusiastic writer (not an author, though). I home school my son and am always looking for great books for him. I like MG and family books, too.

Hi Sarah and Tabitha, welcome to GMGR. We're always looking for new ideas and recommendations, and you'll find loads of books we like (and don't) in these discussions.
You're also in time for vote for our book (or series) read for July & August. Just go back to the front page and scroll right to the bottom, or click on 'Polls' in the top right menu.

Yup! This is becoming a top group for me. Well, what I mean, a group that is worth spending time in and getting to know other members better:)

Diary of a Doofus WizardHi everyone. My name is Jason Panick. I'm new to Goodreads and am an author of a middle grade book called, "Diary of a Doofus Wizard". Looking forward to participating in the group. Thanks.

Hi, I'm Kathy, a 4th grade teacher in Indiana. I'm looking for books to read so I can make recommendations for my students in August. Rught now I'm reading my way through the Young Hoosier award nominees. Hooray for summer reading!

Welcome everyone. We've just set up a page on Facebook, which you're welcome to like. It's just another way to keep in touch with things relevant to the group.

Welcome Jason & Kathy. I hope you find yourselves up to your eyes in recommendations very soon. And you've just got time to vote for the series we'll read in July & August... voting closes Thursday night.

      Hi everyone,
I'm a parent of two children. One is reading chapter books and the other one is having picture books read to them. (We don't have middle grades in the country I'm from).
Since I've had children I haven't been reading many books and then it has mostly been some non-fiction. I have recently gotten back into reading fiction and thought that as my oldest is reading chapter books it's a great time to start reading them again as I missed out on reading some classics when I was younger and then there are lots of great new books too.

Welcome, Julie. Many of us here understand the struggle of finding time to read while raising our children. I hope you enjoy the selection and recommendations you find here. I'm curious to hear your input in the discussions and to hear your child's thoughts as well.

Hi Jim. I'm from New Zealand.
We have Primary School which children start at when they turn 5 years old. They start in Year 0. Primary School goes through until the child is in Year 6, where they usually turn 11 years old.

Then we have Intermediate School for Year 7 and 8. In Year 8 most children turn 13 years old. The exception to this is rural country schools which can go from Year 0 through to Year 8.

High School is from Year 9 where most kids turn 14 years old through to Year 13 where teenagers are usually turning 18 in their final year of school.

Julie, that is basically what we do, I thing of middle grades as upper grade school, years four five, six maybe. Between being children and being adolescents so age nine to eleven or twelve.

Thanks Dixie, that's good to know. I'll take it as being age nine to twelve year old children.

Welcome, Julie! I think you've got the age right for the "middle grade" stuff. It reaches up and down for some kids, of course, but 9-12 is basically the idea.
I look forward to hearing what kids are reading in NZ. We spent a month there 20 years ago, so I have a soft spot for the place :) (And as an aside...can't believe it was 20 years. But I guess I have to, along with believing my kids are pretty much grown!)

Yeah, we don't have middle grades in the UK either, and British mums ask me what I mean when I say I write MG books. I say it's upper Primary/early Secondary, 9-12 age group. But they do year numbers now that didn't exist when I was at school, and I'm never quite sure whether they match the US grades or not. I'm sure someone can enlighten me. As with everything, it's only a guide to reading tastes and skills.

Hi Rebecca. That's nice that you spent a month here. A couple of popular books/series here at the moment are David Walliams books and Andy Griffiths Treehouse books (looking at the information from the two main bookshop chains).

Hi Jemima. Yes the school grade/ year names can be confusing. It has changed from when I was at school too. Thankfully I can refer to the ages of 9 to 12 year olds. :)

Hi Ana,
We get a lot of books from the USA and UK here so popular books there are probably popular with children here too.
Our NZ Children's Book Awards are next month. The finalists for Junior Fiction are:-
Enemy Camp
From the Cutting Room of Barney Kettle
Lily Max: Satin, Scissors, Frock
The Bold Ship Phenomenal
The Girl Who Rode the Wind
Sorry I'm not sure how to link these. Can anyone tell me how so I will be able to do it in the future? (Thanks to Jemima's help I know how to do it now and have edited this post).

Deborah, the correct place for your advert is in the Giveaways section, not the 'welcome new members' thread :)

You'll find some hints on doing these things in a post in this 'new members' section, 'guidance for people new to groups..'. or some title like that.
But when you're writing a comment in the online version (it doesn't seem to appear in the App) there is a note immediately above the typing box saying 'add book/author'. Click that and a dialogue box pops up for you to type in the title and search for the right book. Mostly links to titles are preferred to covers, but sometimes you want one, sometimes the other!

Thanks for your help Jemima. I have gone back and edited my post and put the title links in.

Well done, Julie! Took me ages to learn those things.
I haven't seen any of those books you list, so maybe they are slow to reach us here! Or maybe I've just missed them :)

It's thanks to Jemima that I've learned to do it.
I wonder if many NZ children's books are available in your US market? If not then they maybe available electronically. I'll post who the winning book is when it's announced next month.
Instead of posting book news from NZ in the welcome thread, what would be a good area/thread to post it in?

I'd suggest General Discussion or Current Events.
If you head it something like 'MG book news from NZ', maybe I'll do a comparable one from UK. It probably won't be such 'news' as it would be to many - unless another UK member would like to volunteer?

I put it under Current Events as I think news and current events are related.
I would be interested in reading book news from the UK and the US.

Great idea, Julie! With ebooks, it's easier to get stuff from far away and read around the world.

Well, Jemima. I'm sorry, that certainly wasn't my intent, Jemima wrote: "Deborah wrote: "I wanted to share..."Deborah, the correct place for your advert is in the Giveaways section, not the 'welcome new members' thread :)"
Hello my name is Denis Lipman, I'm a commercial writer switching to full-time "creative" writing. Interested in mid grade books for young teens. I'm a Brit living on the Seacoast of New England with a teen daughter. This group seems like my cuppa tea! Cheers
