Hi Rebecca! Nice to "meet" you. : ) I'm trying to read as much as possible as well.

Debra Toor (debtoor) | 3 comments Hi Jemima,

Thanks for the welcome. Seventh graders are 12, although mine is a January baby, so she is 13 already. Regarding her "boredom" I realize that there are different types of readers. I write creative nonfiction. The challenge for me is to use story-telling techniques to make dry facts interesting. But there are some young readers who do prefer reading about subjects presented in an encyclopedia/text book format. Amber does not, unless the subject matter is important to her. When she finds a book (fiction or nonfiction) that she likes, she loves to discuss it ...which I love. I love it when books trump electronic devices.

Debra Toor (debtoor) | 3 comments Hi Catherine,
Re: reading for pleasure. I've talked to a lot of young readers who don't like to read. This drives me crazy. Electronic devices are so addictive and there use is not always monitored. I'd love to hear about middle grade reads that grab kids' attention.

A good place to start are the "Books Mentioned in This Topic" links to the right of these postings. You can also visit the Author Corner, but I'm not sure how to get there from here. Maybe Jemima can help.

Julie | 20 comments Hi, everyone! I also just joined Good Reads (very late in the game, I realize!) I am a middle school media specialist (librarian) and hope to figure out the ins and outs of this site to be able to teach it to my middle schoolers eventually. I love middle school-aged and YA fiction and thought this group was perfect for me! :)

message 1357: by Dixie (new)

Dixie Goode (pandorasecho) | 177 comments I think it's a great resource but I'm not sure middle grade readers are old enough to have a goodreads account according to goodreads anyway. I know people do sign up younger but . . .

Oh, thanks for that information, Dixie! I will look into the policy. Perhaps just my 8th graders... I will check it out. I didn't even think about that for some reason.

Yes, we tend to have visits from borderline-old-enoughs every September, and we hope they are supervised by teachers... they do need to learn to play by the group rules, which pop up as you're writing the comment... as you may have noticed!

It would help if the teachers remind them than none of us here are paid to use or control the forum. We're all doing it for fun!

Yes, you have to be thirteen years old or older to sign up for Goodreads. This is a requirement of all social networking sites. Federal law (COPPA) has dictated that the legal age of consent to participate in a social networking site is thirteen years old.

Cathy | 1 comments Hi everyone--thanks for the group add. My name is Cathy and I am a Library Services Assistant. I love Middle Grade novels and am always looking for excellent books to recommend to our younger patrons. I'm also looking for some people to add as friends on here--I love reading other people's reviews and my current feed is usually stagnant.

Thanks Dixie. It's important for our younger members to remember to respect opinions and, above all, to never divulge any personal information. I do find their opinions can be quite honest and refreshing.

Ally Spector | 2 comments Hi everyone ! My name is Ally and I just recently stumbled upon this wonderful group. I am a Florida girl and an aspiring Middle School language arts teacher. I will be graduating UMiami soon and will be pursuing my Masters in Teaching in English education. Reading is my passion and I have a penchant for middle grade and YA books. I just finished the Westing Game and Stargirl and thoroughly enjoyed them! I'm looking for more recommendations and can't wait to hear your input!

Welcome Ally. I teach in Broward. I know time is tight when you're in school, but read all the Middle Grades and YA you can. It's a real skill to be able to recommend the right book to the right student. You will see lots good of recommendations here.

Dixie Goode (pandorasecho) | 177 comments Hi and welcome.

If you liked the Westing Game, you might like one we read as a book of the month, Escape from Mr. lemoncello's library. I also don't know anything about Big Nate books but last week the school had a scholastic book fair and suddenly we were seeing those all around the 4th and 5th grade classes

Cindy Ross | 1 comments Hi Ally! This is my first year teaching middle school language arts and reading (I previously taught 2nd and 3rd grade) and I absolutely love it! I am currently focused on reading as many YA and middle school books as I can. I certainly agree with Catherine's post --read as many as you can so that you can recommend the right books to your students, as well as be able to make sure they are comprehending what they are reading. I just finished The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and the Life As We Knew It series. I highly recommend them! I am now starting on The Book Thief.

I haven't read Big Nate either, but they are sure hot "sellers" at the library!

message 1375: by Dixie (new)

Dixie Goode (pandorasecho) | 177 comments Ok, so going through some reviews, it sounds like Big Nate has been a comic strip for about twenty years. Didn't know that. The biggest complaints are that he is cruel, calls people fat, calls teacher's idiots. Sounds a bit like a bully. A lot of people gave good reviews though.

Susan Count | 21 comments My FIRST Goodread Giveaway. Oh the adventures I've been on. Oh the troubles I've seen.
I'd tell you the name, but arg I'd hate being DELETED! I guess it's irrelevant anyway.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how to promote the giveaway for a middle grade book? Where do you find the parents of Tweens? I've posted it on several Facebook groups and as far as I can tell - the silence is deafening.

message 1379: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
Susan--I'm going to put that question in a thread in the Author's section. I know most of us who write would love to find the answer to that one!

Do post your giveaway in the Giveaways section.

Welcome Susan. In the strange way that we trawl forums, I got to this post after seeing your giveaway, and finding it on a few forums. You are doing fine... it's a long journey - but... you need to tell us what your book's called when doing the giveaway threads!

And we (authors) still hope that we best gain readers on forums like this by being people who read and discuss books. So, looking forward to getting to know you better :)

A.B. Syed (absyed) | 6 comments Hi! My name is Anila and I've been a Goodreads member for quite a while, but have only recently come back and managed to find out how everything works after being enticed back by the Brain2Book Convention last weekend (which was a marvellous event!)

I'm from Oxford in the UK. I'm an author and I'm a reader of all kinds of books, but mainly sci-fi.
I'm currently on book 14 of my 50 book challenge for 2016, which we've been running at home, not realising that other people also do weird things like this :)

Hello Anila - welcome from the eastern wilds of Norfolk :) Good to see you've returned. I love keeping tally of my books with Goodreads, although it gets rather frightening, since I've passed the 1000 books listed and half of those are To-reads!

I think I'm about 18 of 50 for the year at present - largely because I had to read ahead to get my A to Z Challenge posts done (still reading the book for X!) After that I was hoping for a rest, but my bookclub's just given me a biggie!

Check out our Book of the Month for more MG reads :)

Hi, Fatima. Welcome to the group, and we hope you'll join our discussions.

Please read the group rules, and post your book info in the Authors section.

message 1388: by Jemima (new)

Jemima Pett | 1492 comments Mod
Fatima, you are welcome to join the group, but as Rebecca said, please read the rules.

A general message that bears repeating for all new authors:

It doesn't help to post the same details of your book on ten groups in the same week unless you stick to each group's rules.

This is a reader's group, not a book promo one. I hope you all pick up on Rebecca's suggestion and make your own thread in the Author's Corner (do not hijack someone else's). And we would really like to get to know what you read, what you think of MG books, of writing, reading and all sorts of other issues we discuss in this group.

Thank you.

My all-time top-three middle-grade books are:
'Charlotte's Web', 'Anne of Green Gables' and 'When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit'
Recent favorites: Because of Winn-Dixie and 'When You Reach Me'.

I'm looking forward to some great book discussions :)

Thank you, Rebecca! No wonder so many authors are attracted to this area. I've moved to Victoria eight years ago, and the breath-taking beauty of the scenery remains an inspiration. My novel 'Trina Bell's Humming Summer' actually has a lot of auto-biographical details :)
