Helen Stein (kidzlibrarian) | 5 comments Hello, I am hoping to dialogue with kids and other adults who read a lot of children's books. I was a school librarian but am now teaching gifted fourth graders. I am the chairperson for the NM Elementary Level Battle of the Books Title Selection Committee. Every year (this is my 7th year), I have created a balanced list of 20 exceptional books. I have been having trouble finding local people who are able to put time into reading a lot during the school year so I am reaching out to others here on Goodreads to hear their take on the books I am considering for next year's list. Looking forward to talking books with you all!

Welcome. It's interesting to me to hear from someone on a committee which chooses the books. As a 4th grade teacher in Florida, the Sunshine State list is presented to us annually, and we do what we can to build readership and create enthusiasm for the Battle of the Books. When do your titles need to be submitted for consideration? This school year in particular, my reading time is so limited due to a variety of demands, but I am willing to read at least a couple of books and provide feedback if the deadline is not too soon. Glad to make your acquaintance.

Jennifer | 7 comments Hello everyone! I'm Jennifer, and a media paraprofessional to two middle school libraries. I spend most of my working day reading, cataloging, promoting, and recommending books to my students, but somehow that just isn't quite enough book time for one day. I can't wait to discuss the latest books and trends in the MG book scene.

Welcome! I look forward to hearing more about trends in Middle Grade books from your viewpoint in a school library. My students like to be on trend, and maybe I can use that idea to increase independent reading.

Thank you! We are coming up on our deadline but maybe you have already read some of the books we are considering. I will post them here later to see if that is the case and if you liked them. :o) Helen

Thank you! I'll be happy to share them. Both my schools are grades 6-8 . The first thing they taught me was they really really do not like historical books. They do however love the A Tale Dark & Grimm series and the Maximum Ride, Vol. 1 graphic version of Maximum ride. I cannot keep them on the shelf!

Jennifer, I'm so sad to hear the kids don't like historical fiction! I grew up loving things like Little House in the Big Woods, etc., and still do :)

message 1315: by Dixie (new)

Dixie Goode (pandorasecho) | 177 comments I think the sixth graders I work with do like history if you don't call it that. The textbooks are often left for a sub to cover because it isn't part of the big testing, so history in school is dry, Inconsistent and hard to follow. But they do still love little house if someone recommends them, and they live to talk with me about my Oregon trail book or about other historical fiction

message 1316: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 7 comments Dixie and Rebecca,
I ran a report on our fiction section to find books that had never been checked-out and came up with about 493 books in our 4,000+ collection. 90% of those books were historical. My boss and I are trying to promote them, but this generation of students are really into fantasy, Sci-Fi, and a dash of romance. We did genre-fy (help - I cannot spell this for the life of me) the Dewey decimal system and the new weapons and war section does attract a lot of the guys. The rest of the history section wouldn't get touched if I didn't have this one student who is determined to read every history book in the place. It is sad, but when I ask the kids what they are looking for their responses are variations of magic and futuristic combos.

message 1317: by Dixie (new)

Dixie Goode (pandorasecho) | 177 comments Well, maybe my own enthusiasm for books like little house carries on to my students, and my Oregon trail novel has a magical tine travel type connection between a girl in 1850 and one on the same route in 2002 so it does get the magic vote.

Charles Douglas (chancemaybe) | 3 comments Hi, I'm Charles Douglas, and I just published my first MG book last week. I made all the art including the cover. I'm quite proud of it. I have had a few cartoons published in papers nationally about 15 years ago, and I worked in television commercials for a while. (I still dabble in small video projects here and there)
The last book I read was "Ready Player One" and really dug the 80's references.

Hi Marty! We look forward to hearing what your middle-school readers like and how they react to things (as well as what you think :) )

message 1330: by Dixie (new)

Dixie Goode (pandorasecho) | 177 comments One thing I do notice as a substitute in middle school classrooms is that kids won't pick books to read that they can't take a reading counts quiz in, and although there is a huge amount of books with quizzes, at least 60,000, I haven't been able to see how indie authors get their book quiz on there. Some sites say a lot of schools have to request a quiz for a certain book, not sure though.

Martin, just as an FYI, usually people friend people as they get to know them. It can be a bit slow at first, but it's best to make those connections real (I know. I took in a bunch of friends when I first joined, people with whom as it turns out I share very little).

Ana Salote | 36 comments Hi all,
I'm a writer of MG/crossover fiction Oy Yew I love children's classics, and agree with CS Lewis that a children's book that can only be read by children is by no means a good children's book.

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
Hi Ana--welcome to the group!

I don't think I'd heard that CS Lewis quote, but I have to agree! Though it might be a popular book, which is a different thing.

G.L. Wilson | 7 comments Hi everyone
Thanks for having me.

I taught 11-18 year olds English, was a Head of Drama and have some experience as a children's author and playwright

I've just published a book on Kindle and I am eagerly soliciting readers. It's called Campion's Choice but it looks like I have to wait a week before the Look inside' button works. And I won't say more here in case that breaches this thread's etiquette!

I'm really looking forward to benefitting from the wisdom of more experienced group members.

Best wishes.

GL.

Hi G and welcome. Yes, that just about creeps inside the thread's etiquette! But you can post more details (and pop in the Goodreads link too) in the Author Corner, and if you've got an offer price or giveaway, use the Giveaways thread!

Have a good time here - we're mostly harmless ;)

Debra Toor (debtoor) | 3 comments Hi there. My name is Debra Toor and I am the author of Survival Secrets of Turkey Vultures. I am looking forward to discussions about great books for middle graders. Although I am primarily interested in ecoliteracy for kids, I enjoy all books that engage kids' interest. I have a daughter in grade seven, and she is quite vocal about not being bored when she reads.

Hi Debra, and welcome to the forum. I always have trouble working out grades v age - is grade 7 around age 11 ish? And I agree, if it doesn't engage kids' interest, why would they bother reading? Same applies to me! Hope you find some interesting reads here.

Welcome. I love the goal of including ecoliteracy in books for kids this age. They are very interested in saving the world, and we can teach them how to do better than previous generations have done if we go about it the right way. As for your daughter, I think no child should be bored when reading for pleasure.
