Susan, Welcome to the group. Very insightful that the group discusses a lot of older books. We definitely cover a lot of the classics. We also look at newer books. Check out the discussions and see if there are any books you recognize. This group focuses on middle-grade reads which is a different category than YA. I invite you to give several of the books a read. Old doesn't mean outdated and middle-grade provides some excellent books.

Welcome to the group, Susan. I hope you will stay for a while and participate. I agree that you might also like the Young Adults group, and you can participate in both. As a teacher, I am always looking for books that my students will enjoy. I cannot read them all, as there just isn't enough time. As a result, I love to read the suggestions and opinions of others in this group, and use them to guide me to new books for my classroom library. Some of the older books are great, and if you see us discuss them, feel free to mention a more recent book that has something in common with the older one. Can you recommend a modern book that deals with love of a pet, loneliness, fear, and loss that my students might read to replace Old Yeller?

My name is Jill, and I am here for 2 reasons: 1) Middle grade books give me nostalgia, and they are where I find my happy place and 2) My 11yo Aspie son enjoys Nonfiction only, and I'd like to get suggestions for fiction that might change his mind. I'm all "dragons, fairies, and strange lands!", and he's all "Just the facts, lady!" :D

Hi Jill, welcome to the group. I'm sure you'll get lots of encouragement here. There's so much great middle grade fiction. That said, if your son is into non-fiction that's great too! Has he found Terry Deary's 'Horrible Histories'? They're wonderful. Facts with fun! (History with all the horrible bits left in.)

Welcome, Jill! My oldest is also mildly Asperger's, and it was humor that first moved him into fiction. He was a hair younger than 11, probably more like 4th grade, and I recall that Hank the Cowdog was about the first fiction book (series) that he was willing to read. Oddly, once he got going on fiction, he developed a taste for fantasy. Now he's writing it :D

But if yours insists on fact, realistic fiction might be the way to go. Maybe he'd like some of the historical fiction that's out there--much of it is very well crafted and teaches a lot about the historical events.

Gabrielle (fearlesshyeana) Hi! Just found this great group. I love folks that never stop reading children's literature, why should we?! I adore magical realism and I'm here to find lots of recommendations for new reads, not just in this area. I'm a middle grade author, like many others in the group. My books are about a boy called Alfie Bloom who inherits a castle. My strongest influences and favourite reads are Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton. Looking forward to finding out what folks on here are reading.

message 1238: by Birgitte (new)

Birgitte Rasine (birgitte_rasine) Hello everyone, I've finally managed to get back to Goodreads after many months of writing. Still waiting for someone to invent time-in-a-box so I can buy up several acres' worth.

A little about me: Czech-American storyteller, producer, journalist, poet, entrepreneur and avid chocolate lover. I had no computers, cell phones, video games or even Barbies growing up so I immersed myself in books (not that old, either! we were just behind the West a bit). The Hobbit, The Monkey King (a tale from China), and the Folk Tales of Oceania, among others. Yes, all translated into Czech. These books shaped who I am today.

Just finished my first upper middle grade historical fiction/fantasy novel and looking forward to getting to know everyone here. Seems like a great group.

Warm regards, Birgitte

Barbara Gipson (zipper34) | 12 comments Hello everyone. I've been a member of this group since August, but somehow missed the new member's section. So let me introduce myself. I'm Barbara Gipson, a single parent of one adult son whom I live with in Long Beach, CA. Originally I'm from Los Angeles. I love mysteries. All kinds of mysteries even those written by children. I also love magic. So, I'm pretty much hooked on fantasy books too. Comic books. Okay, I'm hooked on those too, thanks to a sweet little boy who introduced me to the Wizards of Mickey this summer.

Mystery and fantasy, eh? I know someone who writes those, but you'd have to nip over to the Author Corner to find me ;)

Niki (nikilovestoread) Hi Everyone,
My name is Niki. I joined this group because I love Middle Grade books. My oldest son is 11 (almost 12) and it's fun reading some of the same books so we can talk about them. I'm not sure what it is about Middle Grade books, but that seems to be most of what I read these days with a few others thrown in here and there. I have lots of books on my To Read list and seem to add more to the list almost every day. (I still have not read the Harry Potter series, but hope to soon...)
