Jane, I just finished reading The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, which was pretty well written and is both about mythology (in a way) and a bit supernatural. Reminded me of both Indiana Jones and Percy Jackson, though not as wild as either. Your post just made me think of it, so I thought I'd throw that out there. I believe there is at least one sequel out.

I am always looking for fabulous books to get kids interested in different genres, but books of their choice! I am excited to be a part of this group and learn from everyone! I cannot wait to continue reading with the group!

Rita Chapman | 1 comments Hi everyone. I've just found this group and I've joined to better understand the books that Middle Graders/YA are reading.

I published Winston - A Horse's Tale https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... last year for all horse lovers from teenagers upwards. Winston is an Australian horse who tells his own life story.

I hope to learn from this Group whether our teenagers are still reading horse books or are mainly reading about vampires and the paranormal.

Welcome, Rita! I'm pretty sure at least some kids are still reading horse books! I hope so. Those were staple (hm...a stable?) of my childhood reading!

message 1062: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Webster | 21 comments Hi all! Just thought I'd share this - my son got a book collection by David Walliams (of Little Britain fame) for Christmas, and so far he is loving the first one he's read, Gangsta Granny. I haven't read them myself yet but my 9 yo laughs his head off while he's reading so I would say he highly recommends them. :)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
I"m not familiar with those, Mandy. I will have to look them up--sounds like the sort of thing I need to know about for kids at the library.

ETA: rats. Not in our catalog.

message 1064: by Alex (new)

Alex Bugaeff | 31 comments Rebecca, out of curiosity, what catalog is that? I have tried (with my last book) to get into library catalogs, Libr Jnl and similar pubs to no avail. They claim to accept only traditionally published (recognized publishing house) books. Same with Horn Book and Book List. Any suggestions? Thanks.

message 1065: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
I am talking about the library catalog, Alex. I have been able to get my books in, because I work for the library (thus proving yet again that it's not what you know, but who you know). Most libraries, however, shop only from the traditional publishers. And getting into any non-paid reviewing venue remains pretty much impossible.

So my only suggestion is legwork. If you have a good relationship with your local librarian, he/she may be willing to consider your work as a way of celebrating local authors.

message 1066: by Alex (new)

Alex Bugaeff | 31 comments Yes, she's the one who turned me on to Book List and Horn Book after I told her what the LJ said. To no avail. I didn't have the heart to tell her the BL and HB policies are the same. She has my book on display in support. Onward and upward.

message 1067: by Megan (new)

Megan | 48 comments David Walliams is very popular with the kids I teach. Kind of a modern day Roald Dahl.

His books are well written, very kid funny, and a chunky length. Even my more reluctant readers enjoyed reading them. I gave the latest, Awful Aunties, to my niece for Christmas.

We have multiple copies of each in our school library.

message 1068: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Webster | 21 comments And Megan - I find the illustrations by Tony Ross reminiscent of Quentin Blake's for the Dahl books, don't you?

Mandy Webster | 21 comments Also, don't know if any of you know the And Then It Happened books. They're by M & L Wade, a Canadian husband and wife writing team. After they visited my son's school he asked for their books for Christmas and he tells me they are hilarious too. Clearly I need to catch up on my MG reading! My son is leaving me behind. ;)

Wayne Kerr (m0nst3rs) | 7 comments Hi Everyone,
My name is Wayne A D Kerr and I'm an author of MG, YA and adult books. I'm new to groups and was happy to find this one. I'm originally from Canada but now make Arizona my home, although I like to spend summers in the north.
My favorite book as a middle grader was 'My Friend Flicka'. However, as I got a little older my tastes turned to science fiction and fantasy. As an adult I especially like action/adventure and mystery books.
I look forward to getting to know many of you.
Wayne

Welcome Wayne.
Be sure to set yourself up a thread in the Author's corner so you can keep us up to date on any news. Also, you're welcome to list your book/s in the Giveaways and Special Offer section if you ever have any on the go.
Action and mystery are favourites of mine too. I hope you find plenty of great read recommendations to add to your shelves.

Jody Mabry Hi everyone. I'm new to Goodreads and still exploring. I live in the beautiful Linden Hills neighborhood of Minneapolis. I write middle grade fiction, which stems from my love at that age of the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander.

Welcome, Jody and Wayne, from a former Minnesotan. I'm a St. Paul native, and will probably miss it to my dying day. Something about the Twin Cities seems to nurture readers and writers. I think you will find lots of recommendations and inspiration in this group.

Mary wrote: "When my sons were in elementary school they were big fans of the Billy and Blaze series of books about a boy and his horse. One son was a reluctant reader and these horse books drew him in."

Mary, for some reason I didn't read those books when I was a kid. But I recently pulled Blaze and the Indian Caveone from the library shelf just to see, and oh, my! VERY dated! (in both good and bad ways). Talk about free-range kids--today's parents would totally freak out (as well as the CPS) at what Billy is allowed to do. Then there was the racism. That kind of got to me--even for its time, it seems like it was pretty bad (very much of the biology is destiny school, stereotyped Indians, etc.).

That doesn't mean it's not worth reading (I do love Billy's independence!), but some of the characterizations may need to be discussed with a child.

Bella | 14 comments Hi,
I'm a stay at home mom of three. I homeschool two and the oldest- who's sixteen- just started college. I'm a former elementary/middle school teacher.

I, like millions of people, am an unpublished writer. I just finished writing my first book last November. However, I swear that I'm here as a reader. (If this is too spammy, please spank my hand and tell me to delete it.)

I read all genres, except erotica. My GR challenge goal for 2015 is 400 books. So far, I've read 45. Due to life being crazy and taking time to write, I only read 339 books last year. I think that's the least I've read in my whole life, unless you count the years I couldn't read.

Wow! I thought I had a book habit! But I've never kept a list either. I started to this year, and then gave up by mid January. I guess I'd rather be reading than listing : ) Sounds like you'll have no trouble jumping into our discussions!
