Sorry for posting this here, but how do you italicize another person's quote within your comment bar?

Claire Youmans (claireyoumans) | 34 comments Hi, everyone. Claire Youmans. I've published adult fiction, and am venturing into middle-grade literature with The Toki-Girl and the Sparrow-Boy, an historical fantasy set in Meiji era Japan. I'll set up an author's corner thread, and I have started blogging, but here I want to read more of the best of this writing and meet others who enjoy it, too. Oh -- I am off to Japan again in May where I will research and "pre-write" the second book in the series.
I have been rediscovering classics lately. I read all the Oz books recently. Very interesting universe!

message 807: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 1680 comments Mod
Welcome, Claire! You remind me that I never have read the Oz books. I must add them to my list. I periodically feature "classic" kids' books on my blog (whenever I feel like reading or re-reading such). I like to consider how writing for kids has changed in 150 years.

Dawn Malone (dawnmalone) | 9 comments Hi everyone! My name is Dawn Malone, and I'm a MG writer, substitute teacher for preK thru high school, and youth writing instructor at the local community college. I LOVE reading middle grade, especially the contemporary and historical genres. My favorite authors are Deborah Wiles, Jerry Spinelli, and Jack Gantos. My new favorite book is The One and Only Ivan. I'm not a crier, but that book made me tear up a few times. Hoping to get some recommendations for great new reads in this age group.

Michael Selden | 8 comments Hello, I joined the group informally a while back, but browsed through some of the reviews of Wonder, which sounds like a good book. I read (and write) everything, from middle grade (my first book published is called The Boy Who Ran), to Young Adult, to SciFi, to Paranormal, and I also like the classics in multiple genres.

I've certainly read the Harry Potter series (although as an adult) and some of the books I read when growing up still sit on my bookshelf, to be read from time to time.

Hi Michael, a delayed welcome to you :)
I was planning to read Wonder this month but I'm afraid time is running out for me. It'll have to bubble near the top of my list for a while longer. I hope your travels around the group so far have helped you discover some new books. Cheers.

It's not to late to read WONDER -- our BOTM threads stay up for six months, so there's plenty of time to chime in! Glad to have you join us.

Welcome Noemi, I hope you find some great reads for your kids. I remember reading Anne Frank at school, maybe it's time I tracked down a copy for a re-read. I visited Anne Frank's house on a visit to Amsterdam. It was great to walk where she'd been.
Cheers

message 830: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne Goldsmith (suzannegoldsmith) | 35 comments You must, S.W.! The book has changed. The original published version that so many of us read in school was edited by Anne Frank's father, and he excised many of the sections in which she was critical of her mother, as is normal among girls her age. The new, revised edition shows a more sardonic, rebellious and honest Anne. It's worth a re-visit.

I did not know that either. I will have to read it myself again too. We are going on a round the world trip starting this summer and this book is on the kids' "road schooling" curriculum for when we visit Amsterdam and Auschwitz.

message 833: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne Goldsmith (suzannegoldsmith) | 35 comments Wow, sounds like an amazing trip! We lived in Amsterdam as a family for eight months; we all learned so much. It must be thrilling to put together a road school curriculum for a round-the-world trip!

Thanks for the tip. On our trip through Europe we listened to the audio (similar to Noemi's plan), visiting the camp and ending at Anne's house. It's a great way to learn about it and then see the places for real.

Hi Catherine, Robert Westall's "Machine Gunners" is maybe for a reading age of 10-11yrs and up... A superb, award-winning children's novel. A little gritty for younger readers. Look the author up though, you'll find he wrote for most ages. (I'm looking at a row of his books on my bookshelf right now...)

Stephen Moore Rebecca wrote: "How did I miss this Westall guy?? Now I have to go take a look, too!"

Westall grew up in Tynemouth in the North of England, during World War II. He uses his childhood background perfectly in several of his books. But there's more to him than that... Do take a look. It's worth it.
