Rik Ravado | 3 comments Let me take this opportunity to welcome Jenny! I'm also new here and feel, like Jenny, slightly under-qualified. I've worked in engineering, marketing and training for most of my life. I've always enjoyed writing and have lots of unfinished stuff kicking around. When my children were young we read to them regularly at bedtime and this developed into telling made up stories that the kids enthusiastically added to. I've published short stories in magazines but with the advent of ebooks I've recently published my first novel on the kindle platform, under the pen name 'Rik Ravado', a humorous sequel to the Billy Goats Gruff Story. It is very much based on the story developed by my own children at bedtime (but slightly sanitised!)

message 458: by Rik (last edited Mar 10, 2013 10:27AM) (new)

Rik Ravado | 3 comments Jenny wrote: "Welcome, Richard! Are you looking to write for middle graders? Novels? I am still looking forward to my first publication in a magazine or contest. Been eyeing self-pub and ebooks... not sure yet."

My first novel (humourous) is more or less targeted at middle graders. I'm also thinking of writing a sequel but not sure yet. Self publishing on the kindle platform has been an interesting experience so far. But it is one thing to publish but another to sell books. I'm just beginning the marketing bit now. I've written quite a bit of content on the Internet and made money from advertising so that experience helps a little but it is tough to differentiate anything on the Internet or the Kindle platform because there is so much stuff already there!

Avery Hurt | 1 comments Hi! My name is Avery Hurt. I am a freelance science writer, and I often write for children and young adults. (I wrote the February cover story for Muse magazine.) I maintain a science Web site for children called Reality is Strange Enough at www.strangeenough.com. I read widely, but probably love middle grade fiction most of all. A few of my favorite children's writers are: Vivien Alcock, Daniel Pinkwater, E.L. Konigsburg, Diana Wynne Jones, Terry Pratchett . . . . I am currently re-reading the Danny Dunn series. Anyone remember Danny Dunn?

Wendy (wendyl-p) | 48 comments Hi everyone! I'm so pleased to have found this group - thanks for letting me join you. My name is Wendy Leighton-Porter and I'm currently writing a series of time-travel adventure stories for the middle grade age group; the first four are already published and #5 is due out in the next couple of weeks. For me, books are one of life's great passions and, as an ex-teacher, I firmly believe that passing on a love of reading to the next generation is one of the greatest gifts we can share with them. I'm really looking forward to taking part in your discussions.

Melissa Hi, My name is Melissa and I have a middle school age daughter who loves to read, I recently read the term book butterfly as opposed to bookworm and that perfectly describes her!

I joined the group hoping to find some new books and authors for her to try out.
She reads everyday or we read a book together, but sometimes she gets stuck on reading the same book over and over rather than try something new. I'm hoping to get some good ideas on new books/authors she may enjoy.

Linda Martin (lindajm) Hi there... I just joined the group today. I'm a writer and reader who loves middle grade fiction. I have one published novel for young people: River Girl. I'm here to meet other people who read and/or write novels for children.

My interest in middle grade literature started when I was homeschooling my two youngest children. As part of our homeschool studies we read a lot of books together! Then I wanted to write some... it has been fun and though the kids are adults now my books are going to be published.

Welcome Laura! I think my books are described as 'not girlie books' which isnt surprising since I've never been particularly 'girlie' myself. Give me horses and other animals any day! And trains. And biplanes...
I hope you have lots of fun here.
