Nope you can read Infernal Devices without reading the TMI series since it takes up in a different time and aren't really connected by much
it would probably make the shadow hunter stuff easier to understand but honestly ID is a much better series than TMI....dont even go down that road, itll only dissapoint you.
They use reference to each other and it is better that you read the Mortal Instruments first, it makes a bit more sense....
I read the Infernal Devices first and I didn't have any problem with it. I don't really think it makes a difference =D Hope you enjoy them!
The Infernal Devices is a prequel to The Mortal Instruments. If anything, i would read The Infernal Devices first, but it's not necessary. Although Both series share a couple of characters, the story line is different. You don't have to read one to understand the other. I would personally read The Infernal Devices first just because it takes place before The Mortal Instruments.
I've started reading The Infernal Devices and I haven't read the Mortal Instruments yet, but it's fine! They're like seperate stories.
I couldn't get into this book. I really liked the Mortal Instruments series better. Maybe I just got sick of reading the same thing though. I really do love Cassandra Claire's other books though.
You don't, although I feel like Shadowhunters are explained more thoroughly in The Mortal Instruments. I started reading Clockwork Angel first and was kind of lost when it came to them [the shadowhunters].
I definitely don't think oyu have to read TMI to understeand the TID. There's some side refrences to the other series, but besides that you should be able to keep up quite well. In my opinion, TID is a much better series, anyways!
Nope not really but I do think Cassie goes into more detail about the Shadowhunters in TMI, and sometimes there are subtle references but other than that there's no reason why you shouldn't read TID first.
no i think you should read this before the mortal instruments actually i mean you don't have to but i think ID will actually clear some things in TMI instead of the other way around.the infernal devices are better by the way soo much better hehehe!!
It's better read first TMI, so when you read TID you're gonna be excited with the new history, otherwise, you just get disappointed.... Well, that's just my opinion.
There are a lot of different answers above. To summarize:Could you read The Infernal Devices without reading The Mortal Instruments? You could.
However, the books compliment each other. Reading the both of them builds and furthers the reader's understanding of the world. They are meant to be read in the order that they were published: 1) City of Bones 2) City of Ashes 3) City of Glass 4) Clockwork Angel 5) City of Fallen Angels 6) Clockwork Prince 7) City of Lost Souls 8) Clockwork Princess 9) City of Heavenly Fire. Characters from the Infernal Devices make appearances in the Mortal Instruments, surnames appear in both series, and artifacts either invented or mentioned in TID are also in TMI.
They both are great series in very different ways. I read them in the order listed above and absolutely loved it. Though I like TID slightly better, the only thing I really had against TMI was that I thought they should have stopped at City of Glass. I would, personally, completely recommend reading both series.
Was in the first third of City Of Glass after having a break and reading others 'cuz after 100 pages it didn't really grab me... I was mainly reading them for my fan-girling friends' sake. Then I started Clockwork Angel and the name Herondale was there and when I thought about it, it was on one of the grave stones in the cemetery where Clary hallucinates and all that(Got up to Amatis' house part). So I read Clockwork Angel and absolutely loved it! SO MUCH BETTER THAN TMI SERIES! I think because I was brought up old fashioned or something.. I don't know if it's me or the books but it was just better and less infuriating.
But THEN my stupid friend spoiled it to me that in City of Glass (view spoiler) So I was like wait WTH?!?! So I said that I'd finish City Of Glass before I start Clockwork Prince and maybe it will seem even better because I thought if I read it in order of publication it will make more sense. But I JUST. CAN'T. GET INTO. THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS!!! Everyone says City of Glass is the best but it doesn't grab me! And I hate not finishing a book so I usually pull through.. I'm going to try for this one.. SO I CAN READ CLOCKWORK PRINCE!! It's my mantra whilst reading it. MUST. READ. TO. READ. ABOUT. WILL. HERON-. BLUDDY. -DALE. ._.
No, absolutely not.
They are created as stand-alone novels and are at a relatively low reading-level (even an elementary schooler could comprehend it).
Anyways, it's not really all that hard understand what's what and the plotline even if you were entering in the middle of the series. You'd have to be a total idiot not to pick up on clues and a basic understanding of context.

I read the Mortal Instruments first too. I would read the ID anyways. Its placed way before the MI series, but Its good.
No. Definitely not. They are different stories, thought they share some characters as: Magnus Bane, Silent Brothers. Enjoy your book!
It doesn't matter which you read first... There are connections and you'll understand and see them all once you've read both series... otherwise you can read whichever first. They link together perfectly :)
Kiandra wrote: "Does TID give more explanation than TMI ?"I think both explains enough, and they are really connected. I read them in 2013 by reading all of TMI (except the yet unpublished CoHF) then reading TID. Now I am rereading them in the order that Alexandra mentioned above and it makes more sense because there are references in the books :)
Since Infernal Devices takes place long before Mortal Instruments, you can read this series without reading Mortal Instruments. Chronologically, it would make more sense to read this series first, but it's completely up to you.
