Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Goodreads where the Word Shines.

What on earth is that man on about?

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Going to have a go later. Mind you, we all want to know about books; who wants to know about my purple mangetout peas?!

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Morning All,

The group ring is now open. It is still a bit experimental and during the day I hope lots of authors and bloggers will join in.

Bear with me during the day as I tidy up the welcome screens and add people to the ring.

If you want to be in the ring you need to be an author or blogger and you need to be an active member of this group.

If you register today and put the ring code on your home page I promise to activate you on the ring. If you register after today you will be at the mercy of my day job.

If you don't have a blog or web site don't feel left out! This is really all for you. After my first cup of tea I will put a link to the ring so you can have a good old look at it. (I must say I almost took up craftwork yesterday!). We have some very talented people knocking around :)

message 9: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Can't register. It wants my site ID and I have no idea what that is.

message 10: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Lord of the Rings, tell me about my site ID? Shall I invent one? Do I already have one I wot not of?

message 11: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Also - is it the blog password or are we creating one for this purpose?

Sorry - you did say it might be good to have someone non-techy. Are you sure?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Teehee.

I bet he's getting messages from all sides.

Think I'll send him a few emails....

message 13: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments The site ID is whatever you want to use. It's what you will use along with the password to login to the site so you can edit your site details etc. It's not seen by anyone but you I don't think.

message 14: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Egan (jsegan) | 104 comments The site ID is embedded in the urls for the links - if you hover over the 'Next' button here - http://www.jsegan.co.uk/ - and look at the URL in the status bar - it says 'siteid=blar'.

message 15: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments Ah, yes, the site ID does appear at the end of the url, thanks J.S. :)

message 16: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments But you still use it to log in with.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Sorry, just had breakfast...

You choose the site ID. Anything you want (and can remember). You also choose your password :)

Thanks for helping Shaun and JS.

It has been fun looking at your web sites this morning too.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I should stick to beer tasting Shaun :) Thanks. The original link works too now.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments ' I will immediately deactivate any site that does not have working links to protect the ring.'

Simon's Precious. ;)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Just wanted to show that even I am fallible.

Setting up a site on the ring really is easy....

message 26: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments yes it was easy, honestly - even I can do it!
Wd be great to see a few more up and running

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You haven't heard about the trip to Mordor yet have you Karen?

message 30: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Mordor? long as I can go in my campervan, no probs! It's in Wales, isn't it?

message 31: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Actually I was thinking more Ring cycle... Ride of the Valkyries. I cd do that. Just need a pointy hat.

Have I done it right?

Love the 'Bardo' enamel, Harry - but I misread it as Bardot... a beauty, anyway.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Hi Harry, Your link works a treat. People are running around the ring now. As it gets bigger it should give all 'ringers' extra exposure.

the only thing is, your navigation bar is very big. You might want to experiment putting it somewhere else. Top, Right seems popular and it should be a more sensible size too.

I think one other site is using wordpress at the moment so if you need any help just post on this thread.

Thanks all for joining the ring.

registration is open for anyone with a website or blog!
here

message 36: by Harry (new)

Harry Nicholson (harrynicholson) | 209 comments Thanks Simon. So far, on Wordpress, I've not discovered how to make the nav bar smaller, or place it elsewhere. I'd appreciate a clue on this - but there's no rush.

Otherwise it all seems most elegant - you are an accomplished boffin.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Thanks Harry. Undeserved praise. As this project moves forward I will build up a bit of knowledge and be able to help out a bit more (I hope).

I'm quite enjoying seeing all our blogs and web-sites joined up. I showed it to a real geek at work today and he was suitably impressed!

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

This is a great idea, Simon!

:0)

message 39: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hello geeklets! Anyone using blogger? I have my linky thinky on and it's got a big grey bit at the top. Anyone know what I've done wrong? I just copied the code adn put it in.

I've had a quick skip through - almost makes me wish I was an author.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Actually Ignite confessed she just 'Plonked it in' to me.....

Any blogger users out there please?

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Simon (Highwayman) wrote: "Actually Ignite confessed she just 'Plonked it in' to me.....

I use blogger at the moment - but I'm just considering whether to scrap the blog and start again with something different Smiley

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments We could have quite a debate about that Jay-me. I looked at so many webbuilders and blog builders a while ago my head ached. I guess it depends what you want from your blog. I have seen some great wordpress pages.....

Anyone have any recommendations?

message 44: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just moved it down but there's still a big grey bit.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments This is my blog. http://2pdesigns.blogspot.co.uk/

I am thinking of changing the name of it, & possibly the layout. I was going to add my family history stuff into it, and also a bit more about the books that I have read on my kindle.

message 46: by Simon (Highwayman) (last edited Jun 18, 2012 05:00AM) (new)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments So excited, Ignite exposed a little bug in Blogger. I think I have fixed the code (she has most inconsiderately gone off to Tai Chi so I can't see if it works yet....)

Hopefully this will mean any 'Blogger' users won't have the same issues.....

message 47: by Sadie (new)

Sadie Forsythe Wow, this is pretty darned cool.

message 48: by Simon (Highwayman) (last edited Jun 18, 2012 05:51AM) (new)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Start looking round the ring from here

http://www.highwayman8155.webspace.vi...

(or in fact from any site on the ring....)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Lots of little display issues as new and varied websites join in. Just bear with me everyone and we should be OK (eventually).

Hopefully all our sites will put the rink link in a nice prominent place but sometimes that can be a bit tricky so you might have to look around a bit to find the ring link

message 50: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Changed silver to white (Simon knows what I mean) but still got a big space before my widgetty thing.
