message 157: by Abi (new)

Abi Gurden | 1 comments I'm Abi, I live in Gloucestershire, England (UK). I'm married and have two grown children, a dog and 2 cats. I don't work because I'm disabled with a chronic pain disorder. My hobbies include counted-stitch embroidery, knitting, crochet, reading, and touring the UK in my caravan (trailer).
I have always had an interest in history, particularly British history. I like to visit stately homes, castles and other places of historical interest in the UK when I go away in my caravan.
Favourites are always difficult for me to pin down, but authors of historical novels set in the UK that I've enjoyed include Margaret George, Elizabeth Chadwick, Diana Gabaldon, Jean Plaidy, Alison Weir, Ken Follet, Karen Harper, CJ Sansom, SJ Parris, Anya Seton, Helen Hollick, Ariana Franklin, and Edward Rutherford, among others! I don't mind a story about a fictional character, provided the character is well written and the time-zone/setting is properly researched and depicted.

How you became interested in historical fiction (or non!) First historical fiction I remember reading was Desiree by Anna Marie Selenko. Adored it. And then The Autobiography of Henry VIII by Margaret George. Although over the years I have taken a strong dislike of all things Henry. He really was a despicable monarch.

How you became interested in historical fiction (or non!)- When we studied Ancient Egypt in Elementary School, I went out and got as many books as I could find from the local libraries. A lot were non-fiction (now I have large collection of Egypt books), but I read some novels too. Over the years, I would read about different time periods.
