FYI...I'm having computer problems at home so if we finish a shelf by tomorrow, I may have to wait until Thursday to request the stamp - right now I'm on my iPad but I can't handle links and stuff very well through here.

Skandia (sfgirl) | 780 comments Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost ★★★★
SHELF: Favorite series
READ: 7/4/12

What can I say, it was one of the best vampire books I have read.
Also the concept of half blood vampire hunter girl joining forces with a vampire hunter vampire was quite original although I remember reading about the “good vampires” in some other book also ...
Anyway, I liked that the book was written with a glint of humor in it so it was definitely not another totally dark and over dramatic vampire story. (Almost so, if you don't count the ending.) That said, how can you not like Bones! I know I like a man with a good sense of humor and if he is good looking too, a girl can easily overlook the slight flaw of him being a vampire. So I don't blame Cat for falling for him eventually. She was a fiery character herself!
I was amused by Cat's jealousy towards Bones and eagerness to kill a vamp first and ask questions later. No wonder she got herself into all kind of troubles refusing to stand back in action. Stubborn and headstrong might be the other words to describe her.
The ending and the events leading to the end took the last star away from being a five star book. It was a bit too much violence for my taste.

We are ready for another stamp! This is one of the best teams that I have been on. Way to go ladies.:)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Nice review Skandia. Everyone I know raves about the series and I've given it a try myself but found the first person perspective too distracting (this is a pet peeve of mine).

Well done everyone! We get a new stamp now!

(from lurking team 16 member)

Hey, ask teammates to pm you the review links. You can cut/paste from their messages.

Partial help with iPad....some links you can get by holding on the link needed, from popup menu "open in new tab", go to new tab, hold on the URL/address line until you can choose "select all" and "copy".

Some link things I cannot figure out yet myself. The right-click date at top right of a particular comment (like member review posts needed for stamp) and then copy ... so far I can only do on regular keyboard. But, can click, which moves post to top and changes URL address which you can hold, select and copy the link to review you need.

Apple absolutely needs more right-click options on the hold. It is the same on iPad in both Safari and mini Opera browsers. I do not have any others on my iPad to check.

D.G. | 2752 comments Thanks for the help, Deborah but I have a spreadsheet set up in Google Docs that creates the posts in the format that I want it (I'm a dork, LOL!) and I need some URL info from each of the reviews. I haven't tried to do it via the iPad but I guess I'll have to find out.

Skandia (sfgirl) | 780 comments Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater ★★★★★
SHELF: 'New2You: Series'
READ: 7/6/12

Lovely, lyrical , sad and absolutely beautiful book. Boy and girl meet and fall in love in most unusual way and there is a slight problem also - the boy is a werewolf and the girl is a human.
Although the characters in this book are 17-18 years old and it's considered a YA book, it was so very different from any other YA book I have read. The characters were all very independent and mature, especially Grace and Sam. Sam's struggle to stay human to be with Grace was really heartbreaking and so very well written that I felt his pain when I read.
The book ended happily for the main characters but left me questioning : What? How? and What now ?
I usually don't read series back-to-back but The Wolves of Mercy Falls may be the exception. Can't wait to get to the next book.

message 217: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 780 comments Thanks, girls! Shiver really was a change from the more violent and straightforward PN books I have read recently.
I was also skeptical to pick it up, you know - werewolves and YA ... what good can come out of it, but I'm glad that I was very, very, very wrong.

D.G. | 2752 comments Well ladies, my trip in August is all set up so here's the deal:

I'll be traveling from 8/7-8/16. I should be fine during the week of 8/5 because we're leaving on Tuesday so I'll have ample time to finish that week's book. But for the following week, I may not be able to get to the book until Thursday.

I really hope that we're either done by then or that whatever shelf is called that week is not one we would need to win!

URL info from reviews are what a team mate can send you if you have any future problems.

Storm (Elemental, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer

Shelf for July 1st:*New2You:series(personal shelf)
Book Chosen:Storm by Brigid Kemmerer
Date Read:July 7,2012
Rating:4♥♥♥♥
Review:I must say that I really enjoyed this book. I found it intriguing and was set at such a fast pace that the story flowed constantly and never lacked for action.

The main characters Becca and Chris were not just your average teeagers and their maybe relationship kept you guessing if these two were ever going to stop fighting the growing interest in each other.

I also really liked the consept of this series where each person had their own element to control but on different scales of power, which makes this book for me more original then most YA novels out there.

I also read the prequel short story that tells a little about what happened in the events that took place before Storm but I wouldn't say it is necessary to read it as most of what is in the short is explaned pretty well in the novel it's self.

Over all I enjoyed this story a lot and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series and finding out what is going to happen with the rest of the characters.

I've read up to book 4 in the Southern Arcana series and I've enjoyed all of them so far. It's a great series, it's definately worth a look

message 246: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments That series looks interesting although I confess I'm tired of all the PNR books set in New Orleans. It was new when Anne Rice did it and I can forgive Charlaine Harris but really! It really doesn't make much sense for vampires and such to be in a really hot and sunny place!!!

I think the setting in Washington State was one of the few things that Twilight got right.

Rating 4 stars

Nick(the heroine) is a born werewolf who's father is an alpha. Nick owns a bar in New Orleans because she does not want to be the heir to her father's throne and just wants to live her life.

Derek was turned into a werewolf 2 years ago and has been fighting his attraction to Nick since before he was turned.

Derek finally gets the nerve to make a move with Nick and wouldn't you know it trouble shows up on Nick's doorstep. Nick's sister is running for her life and Nick and Derek are trying to start a serious relationship, but Nick's sister takes the front seat.

Nick and Derek each go through their own trials and do their best to stay together, but Nick has to go back to New York to take care of some family business.
They are both miserable without each other and Derek comes through for Nick when she needs him the most.

I really liked this book and could of easily devoured it in a few hours and will continue on with the series.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Crossroads (Southern Arcana, #2) by Moira Rogers
Crossroads by Moira Rogers
Shelf: Shifters
Finished: July 10
3.5 Stars

Synopsis
Derek Gabriel and Nicole Peyton have been lusting after each other for a while but at the moment they finally decide to give in to their attraction, their world comes apart when Michelle's sister arrives on their doorstep on the run from the Wolf Conclave. Things go from bad to worse as wolf politics and traditions threaten to destroy Derek and Nick's new found love.

Note: It is necessary to read book #1 in the series first in order to understand some of the backstory.

Review
The Southern Arcana world is intriguing. However, the background of the Wolf Conclave politics as well as the customs and traditions of their society are not sufficiently fleshed out which results in confusion and a vague dissatisfaction.

While Derek and Nick have a tangible chemistry and a sweet romance, their relationship also lacks background detail. This makes it difficult to become emotionally engaged in their characters and story - it is like coming into a movie in the middle. Nevertheless, Nick is a strong heroine and her devotion to her sister is admirable. Derek is one hot and sexy wolf and his willingness to sacrifice himself for love makes him even more appealing.

The plot lags in the beginning but heats up just past the halfway mark and becomes action packed toward the end. The secondary characters are very compelling, especially Alec and Kat, and I look forward to reading their books.

D.G. | 2752 comments Great job, ladies!

In other news, I told my husband the other day that I was thinking of getting a cheapo Kindle to read in the Subway (the iPad is heavier so it's not as easy to handle there.) My plan was to wait until I saw a really good offer for a refurbished one but when I came home today, I found a Kindle Touch on my dresser!

I'm happy and dismayed at the same time because I really wanted a very cheap one so I wouldn't feel guilty if I don't use it a lot. But now that he gave it to me, I have to try to use it more often that I would have on my own!

Arrrgh!
