JenniferJ Dragons will be my toughest one because they are my least favorite supe. Eragon scares me! (LMAO) Been sitting on my shelf for many years..just don't ever see me reading it. I may try the Katie Macalister Ones but I will have to get a first in series because I am kinda anal about reading in order.

I don't know why I dislike them so much because as a child I LOVED Puff the Magic Dragon for Pete's sake! lol

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments At this point we just need reviews from me and Zina for the UF shelf. Mine will be coming soon. I didn't finish last night because I ended up on the phone most of the evening. But I only have like 40 pages left and I'll read those as soon as I can and put a review up asap.

Joanne's life as a weather warden is over, now she's a free agent Djinn, if she can survive training. Her boyfriend, the Djinn David, sort of broke a rule or two to convert her from mortal to Djinn, and now they have been separated so that Jo can be trained properly. Her instructor may look like Santa, but Patrick is anything but a jolly old elf. Barely has she begun her schooling of hard knocks when Jo's old friend Lewis turns up wanting a favor namely, Jo to seal a continuum rift. It's dangerous, but she's the only one for the job. Unfortunately, it sets off a chain of events that could kill all Djinn and wardens, gets Jo trapped by a hormonal stepson of a woman who has a long grudge against her and David, and may lead her to the truth about herself which will either be a wonderful thing or destroy her utterly. ..................... **** This series improves with each book. Jo is smart and snappy, but has a heart of gold that engineers an ending that is beautiful. This book has humor, action, romance, and a bittersweetness that can't be defined here without telling you the surprise.

Kim Darn. The shelf wasn't dragons, it was 'Series Catch-up' (personal shelf). :)

I am going to read Bitterblue.

message 256: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Sorry that I'm the one holding our UF shelf. I had a date tonight, a 2nd date with a guy I really like. I promise not to answer the phone or anything tonight so I can read those last 40 pages and get my review up. So we can get that stamp JIC dragons comes up next week. Unless I missed something, I don't think series-catchup gives anyone a bingo. But I haven't checked out the discussion thread to verify.

I'll pick something out for series-catch-up tomorrow. I know I have a few on audio that will work for it.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Finally my UF review.

Deadlocked (Sookie Stackhouse, #12) by Charlaine Harris 4 stars. 8/4/12

OK I still love this series. (I don't like the TV show anymore). I liked that she tied some storylines up and didn't start a bunch more. I can't wait to see how she ends the series. I had a freak-out moment towards the end but it was happily resolved.

I would say a 2nd date with a guy you like is a good reason to hold up a shelf! :). I hope you had fun!!

message 260: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Not a paranormal but it's the next book on a chain-type challenge I'm doing. Plus I'm in the mood for a historical type mystery. So for series-catch-up, I'll be reading: Ragtime in Simla (Joe Sandilands, #2) by Barbara Cleverly

message 261: by JenniferJ (new)

JenniferJ yep I would say second date would rate as a great reason to hold up a shelf! lol

The following is book 2 in a trilogy. Will it count for this? If so I am gonna read Cold Light (After Trilogy, #2) by Traci L. Slatton for my series catch up.

message 262: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Yes it would count. A trilogy is still a series.

message 263: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I'm changing my series-catch-up book to:

The Charming Quirks of Others (Sunday Philosophy Club #7) by Alexander McCall Smith

because I have it on audiobook.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I will probably read Quicksilver (Looking Glass Trilogy, #2; Arcane Society, #11) by Amanda Quick for the series catch-up shelf.

JenniferJ My Series Catch Up Review for Cold Light (After Trilogy, #2) by Traci L. Slatton
4 Stars
Finished 8/6/12

I have long awaited this second book, Cold Light, after the way Fallen ended. I was NOT dissapointed! Emma's daughter has been kidnapped by a rogue group and she goes on a suicide mission to get her back. I was very excited to be reunited with a few of the cast from Fallen and am still in anxious need of book three now to see how this all wraps up.

I can't say much more without a spoiler comment but I will say I didn't really like the way Cold Light ended. I would not want to be in Emma's shoes and have to make the choices she is being forced to but it's time.... there can be only one victor in this war.

Another GREAT book in the dresden files series. Was excited about the introduction of harry's friend michael, they compliment each other nicely. Michael, the stalwart Holy Knight, whose rock-solid faith complements Harry's magic quite nicely, and Thomas, a deliciously fascinating vampire: soulless deceiver or bad-boy-with-a-heart-of-gold studdly muffin?

This book is an exhilarating roller coaster ride of magic and mayhem, intrigue and deception

Kim I finished my demons book.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Shadow and Bone (The Grisha Trilogy, #1) by Leigh Bardugo

Date: 8/7/2012
Rating: 5 Stars
Shelf: Demons

I loved this one! I loved the main characters and care what happens to them. It has an interesting story line and setting. I will definitely read more of this series.

I think he's more into me than I am into him but he said he's willing to take it slow. He knows I have some issues from an abusive marriage. We're going out again on Friday.

JenniferJ I'm gonna be reading The Restorer (Graveyard Queen #1) by Amanda Stevens as my ghost book and I will be all caught up even if it wont help us much it will be off my to do list. :)

message 279: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Just because it doesn't help us much now doesn't mean it won't later if none of the bingo shelves get called soon.

My series-catch-up book is really boring. I might switch it again.

message 280: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I don't feel so guilty switching my books around a lot now that I'm the one doing the updating.

Going to give Land of Echoes (Cree Black, #2) by Daniel Hecht a try for the series-catch-up shelf. This one is actually a paranormal ghost story if anyone likes ghost books.

message 281: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Thought I'd do another scan to see if Series-Catch-Up gave more teams 4 in a row. It didn't really do much for anyone but 1 team.

These are the shelves we really don't want:

Reader's Choice (give 3 teams bingos)
Male Lead (2 teams bingos)
New Series
Kick-Ass Heroine.

I can't remember which team it is but there's 1 team that has 2 possible bingos.

message 282: by Mary X (new)

Still no winner

I will read Angel Betrayed (The Fallen, #2) by Cynthia Eden

JenniferJ My angels book is going to be Blue Bloods (Blue Bloods, #1) by Melissa de la Cruz

message 285: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I'll have to think on this one. I don't have a lot of angels books. I probably should have saved Envy for this shelf. I think some of the BDB books are shelved angels. I'll have to see if the one I'm up to is on that shelf. I might have to raid my daughter's YA books.

message 286: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I forgot that I had scrolled through the angels shelf before and shelved ones I had.

Can't decide between Small Favor (The Dresden Files, #10) by Jim Butcher or Lover Unbound (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #5) by J.R. Ward

JenniferJ Ghost Book Review for The Restorer (Graveyard Queen #1) by Amanda Stevens

4 Stars
Completed 8/11/12

The Restorer was way better than I thought it was going to be. I don't know why I felt so intimidated by this book or held back from reading it for so long because it was really really good! I actually bought the trilogy on a whim for the simple fact it was a story based in my state (SC) and of the paranormal genre.

Amelia can see and feel ghosts but has been warned by her father, who can also see and feel them, since childhood to never acknowledge them or else be haunted forever and up until now she has always followed the rules he gave her but while restoring an old cemetery she finds herself wrapped up in a murder mystery and has to help a haunted detective find a killer as the body count rises.

I could not put it down! It was a fresh spin on what I have always been told about dealing with ghosts which is to face them and demand to know what they want. I was guessing until the end on who the culprit was. I had an idea but every time I thought I had things figured out something new would arise or a new angle would be presented and the ending left me wanting to find out more of her father and what he is hiding so yes, I will totally be reading the next book in this series!

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I just noticed that angels is a really good one for us. We now have 2 4 in a rows. So we can get BINGO if dragons or dark fantasy gets called.

message 289: by Kim (new)

Kim Hey gals! I am about 1/3 of the way through my series catch up book. We have been out of town, but are heading back today so I should have more time to read this week. I think since angels will give us another four in a row, I am going to read that book first and then go back to my series catch up book.

I am going to look at the angels choices now!

message 290: by Kim (new)

Kim OK, I decided on reading Angelfire for my angels book. I also switched my catch up series book to Eona. I have postponed this one several times before, but now that I have started it and made it 1/3 through, I am sticking with it!!! :)

message 291: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I will read Early to Death, Early to Rise (Madison Avery, #2) by Kim Harrison for the angel shelf. Since this gives us another 4-in-a-row, I will temporarily put aside my favorite series book until I finish.

message 292: by Mary X (last edited Aug 14, 2012 09:25AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Angels was a really good shelf for a lot of teams.
For us: dragons and dark-fantasy

for other teams:

New 2 U Author
Reader's Choice (3 teams)
Kick-ass heroine
Male Lead (3 teams)
New series
Sci-Fi Romance
Paranormal Romance
Psychic

I'll be back if there's more. I keep getting "over capacity" on the other window where I was searching the bing cards.

message 293: by Mary X (last edited Aug 14, 2012 09:28AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments This game won't last much longer. So if dragons or dark-fantasy is called we need to read them quick. I will have my angels book finished by then and update as quick as I can to get a stamp request as others post their reviews.

I will be gone all day Saturday to bring my daughter to her father. If the angel stamp doesn't get requested before then and all the reviews get posted on Sat-someone might want to do the shelf-submit for me so it's in and ready. Just in case.

message 294: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments The good news for us is that it doesn't look like either dragons or dark-fantasy gives anyone else a bingo. They do give several more teams 4 in a rows though.

So if either shelf is called we will only get that one chance to win. At this point there's only 1 or 2 shelves that don't give any teams a bingo.

Kim Mary wrote: "This game won't last much longer. So if dragons or dark-fantasy is called we need to read them quick. I will have my angels book finished by then and update as quick as I can to get a stamp reques..."

I will be around on Saturday so I can fill in if all the angel reviews are submitted.

I am not really enjoying my angel book so I am trying to decide wether to abandon it or just keep pushing through.

message 296: by JenniferJ (new)

JenniferJ I was not enjoying my angel book either Kim. :( It didn't start appealing to me until close to the end. I'll try to get my review up later today for it. I am going to have me a dragons or dark-fantasy on stand-by with fingers crossed one of those get called next! :) It's getting down to the wire now!

JenniferJ Angel Review Blue Bloods (Blue Bloods, #1) by Melissa de la Cruz

Blue Bloods
Completed 8/14/12
2 stars

I almost put this book down several times because usually if I'm not into a book within at least the first 100 pages then I never will be but I have heard such great things about this series that I stayed with it and Blue Bloods redeemed itself in the last few chapters somewhat. I gave it two stars sadly just for laying the groundwork to hopefully a more meaningful adventure in the second book.

The characters never came to life for me and were just drab and boring. The only one with any finess at all was the evil minded Mimi who basically single-handedly kept the story alive with her jealousy and bad attitude. I kept waiting on Jack to break out of his shell and show me something but even though he had a few spurts of life and interest in Schuyler he always let his father and twin (Mimi) rule his world.

Bliss and Dylan was a relationship that I saw potential in and just when I was becoming involved (FINALLY) in the story, chaos and mystery break out and the book ends.

Schuyler who I would think should be a main character is just flat and at first I was hoping her and Jack would become a team/couple but Jack acts as though he has no mind of his own so then their is Oliver but one minute he is acting like a child and the next he is all knowing so I just easily got disgusted with the characters.

Another thing that just bugged me to no end was it was almost midways before any mention of vampires and angels ever came into play. The first half was merely high school kids on their day to day crisis.

Way to go on making it through your angel book, LOL! I have abandoned TWO angel books so far. I just could not force myself to get through them. I think I will buy Daughter of Smoke and Bone for my Kindle. I was trying to save some money with this shelf and use ebooks from the library, but it's not working out too well this time, LOL!
