Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Just 1 more review needed from Jen and we can get our YA shelf.

I will probably have a slow start to whatever shelf is called tonight. Unless it's one where I have a book my Kindle can read to me or an audio I can use for it.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments This team is so quiet. I can almost hear crickets chirping when I come here.

I wish the new shelf had been called before I went out. I could have gotten an hours worth of an audiobook done. I have several 1st in a series audiobooks. I'll pick on in the morning. Probably the shortest one i have that equals 200 print pages.

The shelf is New 2 You Series for anyone who hasn't checked the other thread yet.

I am still deciding what to read too. I can't decide wether to read one of the books I already have on Kindle or treat myself to a new one!!! :)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Well I decided to just pick a book now since my computer was on and my IPOD was handy. Plus I forgot that I took all my bedding off and now I have to stay up long enough to put on new sheets.

So I'm going with: The Beekeeper's Apprentice (Mary Russell, #1) by Laurie R. King

message 105: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I'm still working on catching up, so I probably won't figure out which New to Me Series to start until I get closer. I did look through my shelves and I've got about 20 on hand to choose from.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Jen, are you close to finishing your YA book? It's the only one we need to get our YA stamp.

We're only of only 3 or 4 teams with no stamps yet. And those others could have stamps pending already I haven't looked.

eta: OK I just peeked. We are one of 3 teams left without a stamp yet. One of them looks further behind than we are the other looks like it just needs 1 book finished for 3 of the shelves. So they could go from no stamps to 3 very quickly.

message 109: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I think I'm going to switch my New 2 You book. I'm not getting into this one at all. I'm a Sherlock Holmes fan so I thought I'd try this. But the author just keeps insulting Dr. Watson, Conan Doyle and doesn't seem to have liked the original Sherlock Holmes stories all that much. The reader is also kind of dull and lifeless. She gives the characters different voices. But other than that there's not life or inflection in her voice. Kind of monotone.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I'm switching my new to you shelf book to: The Shape of Water (Salvú Montalbano, #1) by Andrea Camilleri

I was hoping I'd come on to find some reviews posted and maybe we could finally get a stamp.

Lets not be the last team to get a stamp. Especially when we have 3 out of a possible Bingo. Don't make me get the whip out ladies.

Love your whipping cracking mistress too :D

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I just finished my Free Space book (7/3) and gave it 3 stars.

Review:
Jane is learning to use her power and it is just in time as a hafling is on a killing spree and Jane needs to help Ryu and his investigative team figure it out. I like this series, but it has a hint of a triangle and in my opinion Jane is with the wrong guy. It was nice seeing her stand up for herself this time around, but I really hate fae politics.

Tracking the Tempest (Jane True, #2) by Nicole Peeler

message 115: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments Ok, I am starting An Ice Cold Grave (Harper Connelly, #3) by Charlaine Harris for Favorite Series shelf and then will probably read Dark Descendant (Nikki Glass, #1) by Jenna Black for *New to You Series shelf.

JenniferJ My young adult read review for Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1) by Becca Fitzpatrick

5/5
Completed 7/3/12

This renewed my reading spirit! I have been in a slump for months now but Hush Hush kept me thougherly entertained with all the mystery and twists! I am totally pro Patch (Love Love Love Patch)! I really didn't fall for him at first because like Nora I felt he was a bit of an "arse" and full of himself but on the other hand his mysterious nature is what held me wondering what he was up to because every since he came into Nora's life it has been turned right side up and it appears danger is on every corner....

This was a really suspenseful story because even when the truth was before me I didn't want to believe it. I never dreamed I would enjoy Hush Hush as much as I did because I am not usually into Angelish books and I suppose that is why I held off so long on starting this series but oh my gosh Patch terrified me and made me want to swoon at the same time so I can only imagine the spell Nora was under for him.

And the ending....ohhhh (clutching heart) More Patch Please. I am totally going to be diggin up the next book!

message 118: by JenniferJ (new)

JenniferJ My favorite series review for Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld

4/5
Completed 7/4/12

Fantastic dystopian story that had me from the first chapter. I can't imagine living in a world such as Tally's where you get a pretty operation at 16 and and you get to go live with the pretties. I mean I would really hate living in that kind of world because what one perceives as pretty is not always anothers opinion and Tally soon comes to the conclusion that the dream she has had for so long of becoming a pretty may just be a nightmare instead. I rooted for her 100% when she rebels and takes off to find her friend Shay and to discover what is beyond.... Well actually she wasn't given much choice in the matter at first as she was given the choice of giving up her friends location or never being able to become pretty which at the time was what Tally thought she wanted...it was only later she came to see that things were not all as they appeared.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I finished my Favorite Series shelf book today (7/4) and gave it 3 stars.

Review:
Harper goes to a small town in North Carolina to find the bodies of missing teenage boys. It is her first serial killer case and she and Tolliver just want to leave once they find the bodies, but fate keeps going against them and they end up helping find the killer.

An Ice Cold Grave (Harper Connelly, #3) by Charlaine Harris

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments Ok, I'm starting Dark Descendant (Nikki Glass, #1) by Jenna Black for *New2You Series. I hope to have it done before the next shelf is announced.

message 125: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Yay Diane. Now we can get our favorite series stamp. I can't do the links on my computer at work for some reason. It won't give me the copy link button no matter if I use IE or Firefox. I don't know why. So I'll submit the stamp request tonight.

message 126: by Mary X (new)

Mary - since your copy link wasn't working and I had some time and wanted to figure out how to do this, I set this up so you can request our stamp today!

message 128: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I for the life of me cannot figure out how to change that long link into just "review" or something. No matter what I do, it doesn't come out like that. I followed the directions given to me here exactly and it still didn't work. I either get gibberest or nothing shows up at all even though it's there in my editing box.

I still can't do the request because I can't copy the link location of the post you just made. But now it'll be super easy when I get home. Thanks Diane.

message 129: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments Mary - if you click on the (some html is ok) link above the comment box, the first example is what you need. Replace what is inside quotation marks with the copy link information and type whatever you want to be seen where it says my link text. I hope this helps. :)

message 130: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I'll try it again but when I did it before all I got was a link that said My Link Text that didn't work.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments I just finished my *New2You series book today (7/5/12) and gave it 4 stars.

review:
Considering I felt kinda iffy after reading the kindle preview, I really enjoyed this book. Nikki didn't know her heritage until something tragic happened and she learns she was a descendant of Artemis. Now two factions of descendants want her to join them as Artemis descendants are rare (obviously she wasn't completely a virgin goddess). Nikki is thrust into this supernatural world and does her best to cope while holding onto her morals and protecting her family. I'm looking forward to the next book and learning more about the descendants.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I hope the shelf announcement comes before I head out tonight. I'm taking a road trip to a town about an hour from here for a singles dinner. I was going to leave early to stop a tea shop I love that's on the way and I don't get to very often.

I'll check back later. I'm ready to start a new audiobook and I have several that work for various shelves. I could get 2+ hours of it done tonight and the rest tomorrow on my road trip to PA.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments My review for the New 2 You Series shelf:

The Shape of Water (Salvú Montalbano, #1) by Andrea Camilleri 7/7/12 4 stars

I liked this book a lot. I love reading mysteries set in foreign countries. This is set in Sicily in the 90's. Inspector Maltabano is a great character. He fudges evidence and twists the truth a bit but it's not to keep justice from being served. More to help innocent bystanders and victims. Camileri did a great job with this book and how short it was. I didn't feel like I needed more detail or that it was rushed. I look forward to reading more. If you are squeemish about the f-bomb then you might want to skip this one.

message 140: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25913 comments Excellent Mary, I'll try and find this one. I love Montalbano from the movies of the same name. The scenery in Sicily is gorgeous.

message 141: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I didn't know there were movies of this.

I'll be reading Burning Wild (Leopard People, #3) by Christine Feehan for the shifters shelf. I could have had 2 hrs of the audiobook done already but the shelf wasn't posted before I left tonight. I'll get through more than half of it tomorrow on my road trip to PA. More if I get up early to walk the dogs before I leave.

message 142: by Kim (new)

Kim I have been on vacation all week and we are heading home tomorrow. I was hoping to have lots of reading time, but it didn't work out that way. I spent most of my time hanging with my family, but that's OK since I don't get to see them often.

I am hoping to get all caught up this week. I will read Clockwork Prince for my shifters book.

I am still trying to catch up after being on vacation. My house is a mess and I have a MOUNTAIN of laundry to do. I just realized though that I also have my new to you series book on audio, so I am hoping to finish it in the next couple of days. I will probably also switch my free read book and shifters books to books I can get on audio so I can catch up fast while I am doing my housework.

I will let you know soon if I make any changes, Mary.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Well my shifters book is going to be delayed. I cracked my the glass top of my IPOD. I'm getting it fixed but it will take a few days.

I hope you can get your iPod fixed!! I would be lost without my iPhone.

I am hitting a snag with my new series book. It's due back at the library along with the audio so I might have to choose something else. I am trying to decide if I have enough time to finish or if I should start on something else. I don't know what's up with me! I usually read 5 to 8 books a month and the last couple of months it's been so hard to find time to read.

Rosina | 1714 comments I finished my new series book

Queen of Shadows (Shadow World, #1) by Dianne Sylvan
July 12 5 stars

Awesome book and start to a new series. A lot of recent vampire novels are missing one or two ingredients to really make them compelling, but this one has them all. It's a tight story with plenty of action, but the author doesn't stint on characterization, the main characters all have depth and well-drawn layers, and even minor characters have plenty of life, enough to make you wonder more about them.

In Austin, Miranda Grey fears she is going insane with only alcohol numbing her mind and playing the guitar in front of an appreciative audience giving her satisfaction. She soon realizes she has the skill of playing with the emotions of her fans as the "magic is in the music and the music is in" her . However, not long after that, Miranda learns the cost as her audience can do likewise to her and she has no defense mechanism to prevent the mental rape of her mind leading to her mental breakdown.

Following a show and a nasty assault on her, vampiric lord David Solomon rescues Miranda. He knows she is an untrained empath and gives her a remedial education into the world of vampires and much more that she always thought were fiction. As David tries to save Miranda, he prays she reciprocates and saves him from his emotional demons ripping at his soul.

The story itself is fairly straightforward and the Shadow World Ms. Sylvan has created is interesting without being confusing,. Clever phrasing, creative descriptions and a savvy main character make this a really enjoyable read.
