She is growing, but I emphasize SLOWLY growing...... The drug addiction piece hasn't improved at all, but the relationships and dealing with other people has. Having said that, it only really comes along near the end of the book, so you do have to deal with a whole book of Chess-stupidity.

The Downside series is like a train wreck for me. It's so painful to read at times, but I somehow cannot look away...... After I read one, I have to read a nice romance next so I can read a happily ever after ending!

I can't handle it. I think part of it is me being a little sensitive to seeing someone messing with drugs like she does. Just too real for me at times. Which is a compliment, but bad because makes me not want to read more. And sad since I do love me some Terrible, he's awesome sauce.

message 204: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25911 comments That's how I feel Vivian. Love Terrible, love the ghosts & mystery, can't stand Chess's attitude to drugs or Lex.

message 205: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments I agree, reading about the drugs is painful. Also, this most recent book was the worst book for Lex, he acts like a douchebag for most of the book (he does call Chess on some of her behavior, but he does it in the meanest way possible).

I think Terrible holds the book together for me. I find myself looking forward to scenes with him.

Lisa M (lisamarienicholas) | 192 comments Hi Team 6. Sorry for the silence this week. I've had some family business to take care of in the mountains of West Virginia and no internet! I'm at a gas station right now trying to jam in as much as I can. I should be home tonight! I have two reviews ready to go. I look forward to reading about your finishes.. because I know that you are all over acheivers and probably have your books and reviews done also! Talk soon.

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Hope everything is okay, Lisa.

After reading comments about Chasing Magic, I have to say that I will definitely stay away from that one. I want my reading experience to be happy - I don't mind some crazy stuff happening on the way to that happiness, but drug use and poor choices that continues book after book is just too much reality for me. I've lived with some of that and don't want to read about it! But it's so good to read your comments - I really enjoy the exchange of opinions.

message 208: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments No worries about the silence Lisa, hope all is well in West Virginia.

Leslie, I totally understand what you are saying about Chasing Magic. I have to be in the right mood to read the Downside series, otherwise I find them too depressing. I love hearing about all the other books you all are reading!!

I'm guessing next weeks shelf will be paranormal romance of some kind, only because I just read Oracle's Moon (Elder Races, #4) by Thea Harrison and that would be my luck ;-)

message 209: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I know, Leah! I'm desperately trying to hold off reading the PNR that I want to read because I'm so afraid that it's shelf will be called. I'm swimming in contemporary and historicals right now!

I just finished Oracle's Moon last month and loved it! This is one of my favorite series.

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Sorry, I don't purposely try to change my book choice! For ghosts, reading Blue-Blooded Vamp. It's listed on the first shelves page for the book. I haven't encountered a ghost yet, but expect to at some point :)

message 211: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments We need a good shelf this week. Ghosts did not help us at all on our bingo card.

message 212: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments I know! Sci fi romance or magic would both get us three in two directions, assuming we get all of our outstanding stamps... I'm biased also though because I have out Alien Tango (Katherine "Kitty" Katt, #2) by Gini Koch from the library right now which would be perfect for sci fi romance!

message 213: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments No luck with sci fi romance. The shelf is up:

This does give us three in a row, which is nice I suppose... time to find a book! :)

Lisa M (lisamarienicholas) | 192 comments Hi Team Six. Time to catch up on my reviews:

Wolf at the Door by Chirstine Warren
Wolf at the Door (The Others, #1) by Christine Warren

Book Shelf: Shifter

Rating: just a smidge under 3 stars.

This book was enjoyable. It wasn't a real thinker and was easy to put down and pick up again without a problem. It had some fun banter and some steam.

The story centered around our Wolf at the Door: Quinn. He's a shifter from Ireland who has come to America to warn his fellow shifters of a dangerous group out to expose/destroy them. While here he meets his match in a "foxy" little fox shifter and a little predictably falls in lust and then love. The characters and likable and have room to develope as the series goes on. The story feels familiar at times but is still entertaining. I will keep it on my list to check out the next in the series but maybe not right away.

I give it just a smidge under 3 stars.

Lisa M (lisamarienicholas) | 192 comments The Kingdom (Graveyard Queen #2) by Amanda Stevens

The Kingdom (graveyard queen series #2) by Amanda Stevens

Book Shelf: Ghosts

Rating: 5 watery stars!!

Ok, we all know how I felt about the fist in this series. Loved it! Dare I say that this book was better then the first.

I hasten to say too much because I hope that you all will try this series in the near future. Everything that I loved from the fist novel is present in the second. The lush description of a creepy, gothic landscape. Stories of family, guilt, betrayal, rescue and revenge. A handsome man. his books leads our heroine to some answers about her past and to some realizations about what makes her special. Please read it. It is fantastic!

Let me tell you the best part for me.. This week found me in a very remote area of West Virginia. A poor and dying town in the mountains - almost exactly the same setting as the book. Sadly, my husbands grandmother past away after a full 95 years. He could not be at the funeral so I went in alone to meet his family for the fist time and to experience the mountains alone (i live in Ohio and we have hills but nothing like West Virginia). They have a family cemetary on top of a mountain that you can only walk to because it is so steep and there isn't a real road. I stayed a couple days after the funeral to soak up some of the family history. I had the opportunity to walk up that hill each morning with a quilt, a thermos and this book and read it in a cemetary. I know that sounds creepy but it was the most peaceful place and what a view. I also slept witht the light on all week. I actually read the third book too! Cool thing is that you learn a bit about cemetaries and headstones in the books and i was able to see some of these things first hand. I can't wait for the next book! His famiy must have thought I was a nut!

Leah | 880 comments Awesome reviews Lisa!! Sounds like I will have to give Graveyard Queen a try soon.

Leslie - I read First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones last bingo round and liked it. Much funnier than I expected, I actually laughed aloud at some parts, which is unusual for me :) I can't decide what I want to read for the demons shelf!!! It's almost as if there are too many choices and that makes it harder to just pick one!!

I've requested our shifters stamp!!! :D

Leslie, I enjoyed the Charlie Davidson books. They are pretty funny.

This is the fifth and final installment of the series. To sum it up, there's non-stop action, unexpected twists and bombshells, and the return of an awesome cast of characters. Plus, Giguhl is the coolest fifth level mischief demon ever.

It's been so much fun reading about the great adventures of Sabina and friends, and the conclusion should leave fans very satisfied :)

Vivian, I love that series. I resisted reading it for so long because I thought the name was dumb. I do acknowledge that in itself is dumb but sometimes that is how I pick a book.

I really loved the characters and the end of the series is soooooo goooood. Never saw it coming. Can't wait til you read it.

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Hip Hip Hooray!!! for the stamp. And I've started my book today - so far pretty funny.

And Lisa, I'm so sorry for your family's loss. But it was wonderful that you got to go and spend time with his family. I happen to love cemeteries, but not sure I could read a scary book in one. My husband's family has two tombs in old NO cemeteries and they are pretty creepy. Though I used to threaten my kids that we were going to visit and have a picnic and visit the family members in the tombs (lots and lots!).
Great books everyone is reading - my TBR pile is growing.

Jodie (jodez) | 60 comments Existence by Abbi Glines
Existence by Abbi Glines
Bookshelf: Demons
Date read: 23rd July 2012
Rating: 4.5 Stars

Abbi Glines had a fan in me after I fell in love with Beau & Ashton in the Vincent Boys, but after reading Existance I would go as far to say that I would read anything she writes. Holy hawt batman people. This lady can create a swoonworthy book boyfriend! I couldn’t put it down. I needed to know. What you ask? Everything!

I don’t know what to say. Really. It’s so weird. Usually I have so many words after finishing a book that I just type and type until I have to eventually delete whole sentences and paragraphs because I am babbling trying to get my point across, but I’ve got nothing.

So much of this story I sat there with a ‘Whaaaaa?’ expression plastered over my face. I was so into it – I read it in one sitting, but had absolutely no idea what was going to happen next. Pagan sees souls (ghosts) but doesn’t communicate with them. She leads a perfectly normal life with her writer mum. She attends school, gets good grades & has good friends. Things start to change in her world when she starts falling for a HAWT soul that can talk, is the lead singer of a band and her new classmate. Enter Dank. Things start going strange. She hears a voice in her mind, survives a car accident with suspicious details, and is stalked by a soul that is intent on harming her. Crazy times.

Pagans boyfriend Leif and her 2 besties Miranda & Wyatt blame pain meds for her strange behavior, but it is so much more than that. The chemistry she shares with Dank is so much more powerful than the friendship and kisses she shares with Leif but she knows nothing about him and his hot and coldness is confounding for her. She will do anything to get him to stay with her.

There were times that I was shaking my kindle wanting Pagan to demand answers, to slap Kendra - hard, confide in her childhood best friend about everything or even just something, but mostly I wanted her to tell Leif he came across way too clingy. So looking forward to getting all the answers in Predestined!

Overall this was a compelling romance with some paranormal thrown in and a cliffy that left me drooling for more. I am logging straight off to start Predestined...

message 237: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Succubus Blues
finished 7/23/12
4 stars

I read this in pretty much one sitting, it was such good fun! I admit, this is my first Richelle Mead. Not sure why, but her books have never called out to me. Obviously, I've been missing out!

I love characters that love books. It was fun to read about the fangirl in Georgina when it came to Seth's books, and I really enjoyed a lot of their exchanges throughout.

While the villain was obvious from the beginning, there were still plenty of surprises and unexpected twists that kept the book exciting.

Georgina, I love most of her, but the Succubus part is not one of them. Her having sex with (view spoiler) didn't sit well with me. I don't have an issue with the sex, just her choice of men and the timing of it all.

I'm not sure I like Roman, but I'm curious to see what happens with him later on. Carter was one of the stand out characters for me, want to find out more about him too!

And is it me, or does Georgina need some girl friends here? Succubus or not, she's surrounded by way too many males.

message 238: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments Nice review Vivian. If you continue on within series, you will have to get used to the random, unsettling sex though. It is a theme throughout the books. I think the timing and choice of men is designed to make the reader feel a bit uncomfortable - the same way Georgina doesn't truly feel comfortable being a succubus.

I loved the Georgina Kincaid series though, so I highly recommend you keep going!!

message 239: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones
Shelf: Demons 7/24/12 **** stars

I really loved this first book in the Charley Davidson series. It took me a little bit to figure out what was going on but once I did, it was hard to put down. Charley is a modern day "Grim Reaper" and dead people find her in order for her to help them pass over. She is also a private investigator and helps her uncle in the Police Dept. solve crimes. In this story, she meets 3 recently killed attorneys and they can't leave until she solves who killed them. She is also being visited nightly by a very sexy supernatural person who also has followed her throughout her life. The story is fast paced, funny and very sexy. She is an engaging character and the characters around her are also interesting. The world building takes some time to become apparent but the mystery/suspense is well done and tightly crafted. Great start to a series!

Leah | 880 comments A Local Habitation (October Daye, #2) by Seanan McGuire
Book: A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire
Rating: Three Stars
Date Read: 27-Jul-12
Shelf: Demons

This book was good, but it suffered a bit from short-story-long-book-itis. There just wasn't enough going on to justify an almost 400 page book. I think everything could have been wrapped up in a much shorter book.

The first half of the book, in particular, really dragged for me. Toby is sent out to another land to investigate why Sylvester's niece isn't returning his call. Detective work and mysteries ensue. However, the first half of the book is a lot of react and act, rather than actively solving the mystery. Or possibly Toby is just a REALLY bad detective. Seriously, that might be it. She works slow and doesn't really know what she's doing - EVER.

The second biggest criticism I have is that the author put a lot of work into building a wonderful world in book one, and then in book two she takes us somewhere else entirely! I wanted to stay around Toby's home, and the fae lands that we discovered in book one.

But, with all that, I still liked the book, and I still liked all of the characters. A solid three stars. I will continue reading the series because I heard this is the toughest book to get through, and then the series improves.

My initial reaction to finishing this was "squeeeeeeee!!!". That's how much I love this series. I decided to start the book before going to bed last night, and three hours later, I was done. I should learn to savor these things.

This book was an emotional roller coaster. I don't even know to get into it without spoilers but I was frustrated, heartbroken, excited, relieved, and ultimately satisfied with the turn of events.

The return of Donovan Caine. Surprisingly, I'd say this was a good thing, even though he is one of the most unlikeable guys ever created.(view spoiler)

Gin has her ups and downs, definitely some moments of stupidity in there - I was really mad at her at a couple points, but what I love is she actually learns from her mistakes and grows from them.

Between all the relationship drama, there's some kick-assery going on and Gin remembers to use that brain of hers to help defeat the Big Bad. But she doesn't do it all alone, her friends are always right there to help save the day.

"Is he always so shamelessly greedy?" - kind of sums up Finn perfectly.

Owen makes me want to melt into a puddle with all his super awesomeness.
