~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Hostage to Pleasure (Psy-Changeling, #5) by Nalini Singh

Week 2 Shelf: Favorite Series 6/27/12 ***** stars

Wow! I feel like I've just stepped off a rollercoaster ride. What an amazing installment in the Psy-changeling series - I think it's the best one so far. Ashaya is a Psy who has been working on a protocol that will help to create a hive mind in the psy world. Dorian's is a leopard shifter who's sister was killed by psy serial killer. Ashaya convinces the shifters to rescue her son and then she also escapes. This is an amazingly complex novel and all the different parts of the storyline come together more completely in this novel. There is such a taut tension throughout the story and the love story between Dorian and Ashaya is beautiful to read. But it's also a love story about a woman and her child and sibling love. It's beautiful how Singh weaves all this together.

I love reading these reviews. Soooo good.

Lisa M (lisamarienicholas) | 192 comments I can hardly wait to see what the next shelf will be. I never thought that I would enjoy this so much. I have so many books I want to start but I know that I will hit a time snag soon and I don't like to have two books going at once. Do you all find yourselves reading more then one book at a time?
Did anyone start the Janine Frost new one?

message 106: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments I usually only have one or two books going at once, but I'm pretty sure I'm the exception around here. A lot of GR readers have a few going at once. I'm too impatient - once I've started a story, I want to know how it finishes!!

message 107: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Every once in awhile I have more than one going at once, but usually I read about 1 a day. If I'm reading one at B&N and one on my nook, then I'll have 2. Or if it's a really long one - like "Game of Thrones". But I'm like Leah, once I start something I like to finish it.

message 108: by Jodie (new)

Jodie (jodez) | 60 comments Yep, I'm one book at a time kinda girl. I average about 4 books per week. Usually once I start a series I have to keep going until I've read all that are published...then I can move on. Usually.

Leah | 880 comments Red Glove (Curse Workers #2) by Holly Black
Book: Red Glove by Holly Black
Date Read: 27-Jun-12
Rating: 3.5 stars
Shelf: favourite-series

A nice followup to White Cat, I wavered between a 3 and 4 star review, so I suppose I'm at 3.5 stars.

This series has a lot more mystery aspect to them than many other ya urban fantasy series. The focus really is on the plot and on figuring out what happened. During the plot, the characters naturally develop and change. A lot of stories I feel like the plot is chosen after the author decides where she wants the character's personalities to go, this book I felt the characters were truly changed by the plot, rather than the other way around.

My main negative comment with this book was that Cassel, our curseworker hero, was a bit flip floppy in terms of his decisions. This irritated me because in book one Cassel was pretty determined when he set his mind to something. The most glaring example of this in the book was when (view spoiler)

There's only one more book to go in this series (it's out already), so I plan on reading it soon!

message 110: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I feel like I've missed so much in just a few days!

Seriously, I've been loving the reviews, so now I feel the pressure to write more than 'it was good, I thought the characters were fun' type of reviews. *sigh*

Life has been a whirlwind, but should slow down next week and I should be able to get all my books read then. I decided my books need to be quickies right now, nothing epic for me. Up until the last couple months, I usually read 3-5 books a week, now it's 3-5 books a month, so an 800 page book just isn't going to keep my interest.

Changing my favorite-series book to Blue-Blooded Vamp. Sorry 'bout that.

message 111: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments Vivian, I don't see Blue Blooded Vamp on the favorite series shelf. I looked through the book's tags and I don't see a favorite-series tag. Did you find it the shelf pages? Otherwise it won't be eligible and you will have to read something different this week...

message 112: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Leah, I looked as well just to make sure you hadn't missed it and it is definitely not shelved as Favorite Series.

Also, shelf announcement is up! I don't have the link or anything but it's New2You series and it's a personal shelf. Since I'm trying to save my PNR reads for other weeks, I'm thinking about what I want.

message 113: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments Thanks for double checking Leslie, I wasn't sure if maybe I just missed it or something. Vivian - let me know what other book you want to choose for favorite-series.

New shelf is a personal shelf (no GR link)! Here's the restrictions for the New2You: Series shelf:

❀ Members are allowed to choose the first book from any series that is new to them - no genre restrictions
❀ Book must be 200+ pages, part of a series and the first in that series
❀ Re-reads are not allowed - must be a book/series new to you

I'm not sure what I will read yet.... Happy Reading everyone!

Leah | 880 comments Blood on the Bayou (Annabelle Lee, #2) by Stacey Jay
Book: Blood on the Bayou by Stacey Jay
Date Read: 30-Jun-12
Rating: 3 stars
Shelf: Free Space

A solid story, but there was a little bit too much going on for me, especially in the love interest department. The fae in this series are blood-sucking little fairies that are so vicous that humans have resorted to living in cities surrounded by large iron gates. It's different than any other fae-related novel I've read, which was nice. This was book 2, and we did keep learning more about the fae mythology and biology.

Our heroine Annabelle (if you can call a semi-alcoholic indecisive hot mess a heroine) has agreed to help ex-boyfriend and current FBI operative Hitch solve the case of the missing syringes. Basically, Annabelle gets in way over her head but does manage to stay smart and avoid looking like she has no idea what she's doing. Annabelle's character does 'detective' very well and she is convincing as someone who cares about her fellow man, even if she tries really hard not to.

In the love department though, Annabelle is as dumb as a stick sometimes. She has NOT ONE, NOT TWO, but THREE super hot-guys who are interested in her, and she spends the entire book flipping back and forth between the three. I thought it was a bit too much, it made Annabelle's love life very frantic, and it made the book pace change constantly. I didn't understand a lot of her decision in her love life, which is surprising because we get so much information about it - a lot of the book is dedicated to Annabelle's inner turmoil.

As a final note, Annabelle must be one hot lady, because the guys still wanted to do her even when she had just finished tromping through a swamp for several hours. I need to find out what brand of deoderant she wears or something!!

Hi gang. I am going to read the Restorer by Amanda Stevens. It is the first in the Graveyard Queen Series and is 288 pages on my nook (376 paperback). I've been dying to read this one and was crossing my fingers that I could fit it in as a Bingo Book soon. It's hot as Heck here today and we are in for more heat on Sunday. Looks like it will be a perfect day for a frozen drink and a ghost story.

Ps. Great review Leah. Super funny. I need some of that deoderant :D

message 124: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I was looking over the other threads as well - have you read any Cynthia Eden, Pamela Clare, Gina Koch. They have series that aren't PNR if you like. Monica McCarty writes an amazing Highlander series. Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series is good if you haven't read it. So many choices, so little time!!

message 125: by Leah (new)

Leah | 880 comments I've read some of the Weather Waren series, and I just read Touched by an Alien by Gini Koch so no luck there (I have the worst luck with bingo, I always read the perfect book just before the shelf is called!) Might have to look at Eden and Clare though.

Also, just found out that The First Days (As The World Dies A Zombie Trilogy #1) by Rhiannon Frater is on its way to me in the mail, so depending on when that arrives, I could read it too.

message 126: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I know! That's why I'm reading a non-PNR for this week's shelf. I'm terrified that I will read something and then it will be needed for a shelf later in the month!

Shelf: New2You Series 7/3/12 ***1/2 stars

This is a new author for me and there was so much to like here, even if it didn't always work. I give it a solid 3 stars and look forward to reading the next book in the series. This series is about a pararescue team and this particular story is set in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Such an interesting setting and a very interesting premise. Sunny lives in a town that is "off-the-grid" and she is wilderness guide as well as business owner in her small town. She is rescued by Wade after a small avalanche leaves her stranded. While getting out, they discover the bodies of two townspeople she thought she had guided out of the wilderness and then all of sudden they are getting shot at. There is requisite attraction between the two of them and the initial suspicion. What keeps this book from being really good is that you never really feel connected to the characters. You are interested in them and what's happening, but it's not a strong connection. Very enjoyable, fast-paced read however with interesting side characters. One of the storylines was a little perplexing and not very well fleshed out, however, and this did take away from the story somewhat.

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Hi everyone! For those in the States, have a happy and safe 4th :)

Okay, almost caught up.

New2You: Once Burned
Finished 7/3/12
4 stars

After the last couple of lackluster books about Cat and Bones, I didn't have super high expectations for Vlad and Leila, but they brought back the love for sure. This book reminded me of the first couple Cat and Bones stories in a good way - a lot of snark and chemistry between a strong-headed female and a studly old vampire.

I really enjoyed reading about Leila and Vlad. There are already so many kick-ass heroines out there, but Leila holds her own and I'm already a fan. She's strong, loyal, and snarky, some of my favorite things in a UF heroine. Vlad is just as studly as in the Night Huntress books, if a little different than I remember (but my memory isn't something to be relied on). It was very fun to see the relationship between these two develop and definitely looking forward to reading more about them in the future.

While this book is about Vlad and Leila, it isn't all about the romance. There's a story, character development, and side characters I want more of.

It was also fun to get a little cameo from the "vampiric versions of Ken and Barbie" aka Cat and Bones. Though brief, their exchange with Leila made me laugh.

The most disappointing part of the book was the ending. While not a cliffhanger, it felt incredibly abrupt. When I turned the page to the epilogue, I thought I had skipped a couple chapters. It just ended.

All in all, lots of fun, great characters, and very hard to put down.

Free Space: Kitty's Big Trouble
Finished 7/3/12
2 stars

It pains me a little to give a Kitty book such a low rating. The previous books have all been consistent 3-4 star ratings for me, but this one left me with that meh feeling. Sorry Kitty, you didn't quite do it for me this time around :(

I found this latest installment to be a tad boring. Kitty and crew go to San Francisco to seek out a magical artifact before Roman can get his evil hands on it. We meet some random folk, Kitty finds herself in a couple dangerous situations, and we get ourselves set up for bigger things to come in the future. Not the most interesting or unique story line for this series. I've been spoiled with the past books, I've always thought them creative and highly entertaining.

Kitty has her shining moments when the snark comes out and she doesn't think before she speaks. And the folklore/mythology in this one is new to me and introduced a couple of interesting characters. Oh, and we learn a little more about Rick, which is always fun. But that's about as positive as I'm feeling about the book.

This pack of three with Kitty, Ben, and Cormac isn't working for me. I don't know, it doesn't feel right yet.

We're ready for our Free Space stamp!!

I've requested our Free Space stamp :-)

I think for New2You: Series, I will read The First Days. It should be on my doorstep any day now, but if it's not here by Friday then I will pick something different. I do have Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1) by Seanan McGuire out from the library, so I have an option available.

Vivian, I couldn't wait for a bingo appropriate moment and I also read Once Burned this week. I have read the whole series and i've got to say that i didn't like the end either. It was like a bad ending to a good date. All this build up and then your dropped at the door with a handshake. Vlad was my favorite part of the last couple Night Huntress Novels. He was like an inside joke. I like the dislike between Bones and Vlad and I do love the snark but I think that this book has the same "formula" feeling as the others. I still really liked it and look forward to the next one. On a side note- I think that Vlad would be "Hotter" (pun intended) then Bones. Something about Bones dying his hair creeps me out.

Lisa M (lisamarienicholas) | 192 comments The Restorer (Graveyard Queen #1) by Amanda Stevens
Book Shelf Bingo
New 2 You Series

I do not believe in vampires, werewolves or fairies. If I had to believe that something would pop out of my closet in the middle of the night- it might be a ghost. I'm not burning sage or anything but the idea of ghosts really gives me the heebie jeebies. Recently I had a family member have some unexplainable things happen in his home and he had finally resorted to having a "ghost wisperer" of some renoun visit his old farmhouse and "close the portal". Of course we made many jokes at his expense but I'm not jinxing myself by saying never. Also, I used to live in a century home with a hidden apartment on the third floor. I used to hear footsteps when no one else was around and wake from sleep thinking someone was shouting my name. I don't read ghost stories..

However, I really loved this book. It was a story about family, attraction, murder, guilt and ghosts. It was sufficiently creepy without being a total gross out. I was spooked! I felt haunted! There were moments when I got goose bumps. I like a writer who can describe a moment so that you can feel and smell all the things happening and gives you a physical reaction. Amanda Stevens does that without being overly wordy about it. The locations are great, the characters are all interesting. Nobody is a throwaway-everyone mentioned has a vital role which leads to lots of twists. It also makes me think these same people will appear in the next couple books in the series. Also, the story moves nice and fast so once I started reading I didn't want to put it down. At it's basics, this is not just a ghost story but it is a mystery first and love story maybe third. It had me guessing to the end.

I can see lots of directions the next books can take. The author really did a great job leaving little cliffhangers but not leaving me with an unfinished feeling. I'll bet that this will become one of my favorite series. I would recommend it to anyone.

I give this book 4 slightly transparent stars ****

Leah, I don't think it's necessary to have read the other books, but there are a couple moments that you would probably appreciate more if you had the background. I've heard Rosemary and Rue is good, so let us know how it is even if it doesn't end up being a bingo book.

Beware! I loved this book so much, I have many many quotes :) :) :)

I’m going through a bit of a contemporary romance/young adult stage at the moment, which is weird. Usually I am all about pnr or uf, so I’m enjoying a bit of a switch up!

This book was super fun. I knew from the very first page that I was going to love it. Sometimes I just need a really easy book to immerse myself in, one that doesn’t need much thinking. This was it. I was grinning nearly the whole way through. I adored reading her thoughts as a young girl. Here are a few of my favorite bits that I related to;

Important Things I have learned in my life so far;
4. When you have the choice, play with a boy. Boys are easy to get along with. They don’t care if your clothes match, or if your hair is a mess. Boys don’t talk behind your back or make up stories about you to try to hurt your feelings. They are too busy playing sports or video games.

Whatever.
I figured the kids at school would hate him because no one likes a bragger, right? Right?
Wrong!

Well his advice on boys might be good, but evidently he’s forgotten the Laws of Fifth Grade. You CAN only have one best friend. That’s okay though; his memory is probably going bad because he’s getting so old. He is thirty-eight after all.

We follow JJ through life reading parts she felt were so mementos she recorded them in journal fashion. We watch her grow up from a fiery little Princess from 4th grade into a confident and stubborn woman who knows her mind. As she grows so does her relationship with her 2 best friends. Phillip and Danny - this friendship made the book. They have been friends forever. The kind of friends that are there for each other through thick and thin. Unconditional. With Phillip, he keeps her grounded and safe. While Danny seemed to be the fun, adventurous friend. (To all my mummy friends, I know you are just thinking – Danny sounds like the fun one. The dad!) Both were beautiful friendships with so many wonderful, funny moments. She had me laughing out loud remembering when I used to act and speak this way;

I know there are large, really important issues in the world. World peace, terrorism, nuclear arms and global warming. But honestly, finding the perfect swimsuit has got to be top of most women’s list, regardless of race, religion, political, or sexual orientation. So in finding this perfect bikini, I really feel I’ve done my part to help conquer this great world issue.

JJ struggled at times just like any of us. If she wasn’t trying to figure out how to survive being a teenager, she was surviving a tragedy, then she was learning how to grow into herself and her body or learning about human nature and trying to live in every moment. To me she was not just a character from a story, it was like growing up with her. Her honesty us refreshing.

So I ask for more clarification, “Like just being around them or actual physical contact?”
He stops reading my chart, looks at me like I’m blonde and says, “Physical contact. Like kissing.”
“We may need for paper for that, Doc,” Phillip, the comedian in the corner says.
“Shut up, Phillip,” I glare at him.
But he continues, “Just bring in the student directory. We can use a highlighter, might go faster.”

There was a lot of emphasis on JJ looking for love all throughout, but I thought she was wonderful and I knew she would find THAT boy in the end.

Somewhere, my prince is waiting.
Ha!
Actually, I don’t think he’s waiting. I think he’s hiding from me.

I was so happy she found him!

I am so looking forward to reading “That Wedding” next. I can’t wait to hear what’s happening with Danny, Phillip and JJ…

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments All caught up with my shelves! Grimspace is good, intense might be the right word for it.

Grimspace (favorite-series)
read 7.6.12
4 stars

Sirantha Jax - possibly coolest name ever in a UF series. And the person with the name, just as cool. She's broken, flawed, and starts off a little selfish, but grows into someone I would want on my side (especially since she's a little scary and perhaps not entirely sane).

This deceptively small book is crammed with nail-biting action, sarcastic characters, and a little frog baby. My mind was a bit on overload from sooo much happening over 300 short pages, but I was completely hooked from the first page. The sci-fi spin was a refreshing change from standard urban fantasies. Different setting, different tech, different abilities, very cool world Aguirre created.

I'm rewatching Firefly right now, and there's definitely a similar vibe with Grimspace. Gotta love the crew of odds and ends and the slightly dysfunctional, yet loving family they created with each other. These characters are not exactly nice or loved by all, but that makes them seem more real and definitely more fun to read about. Jax + March = awesomesauce, just a really intense relationship.

And I loved the ending, completely unexpected turn of events, leaving me curious about the future, but still feels complete as a story.

A very satisfying 4 stars :D

Leah | 880 comments Nice review Vivian, I loved Grimspace when I read it. And I totally agree about the Firefly vibe!! Really, I just love anything Firefly-like, or anything Nathan Fillion related ;-)

I requested our stamp for favourite-series. I'm working on The First Days, I'm hoping to have it done tomorrow so then we can request that shelf.

And yay!! for the stamp. Happy Dance happening as I type.

Leah | 880 comments The First Days (As The World Dies A Zombie Trilogy #1) by Rhiannon Frater

Book: The First Days by Rhiannon Frater
Date Read: 7-Jul-12
Rating: 4 stars
Shelf: New2You: Series

This book is exactly what you think it would be - a gritty, survivor tale set in a world in disarray. I loved that our two main characters were both female, you don't see too many female protagonists in the zombie genre nowadays. The two women were developed characters with real psyche issues and real traumas from their experiences during 'The First Days' after the zombie virus began to spread.

The story went back and forth between a dystopian struggle story (the horror is real and believable) and a story about two women's struggles to understand their place in the world. Jenni, a abused housewife who lost her family to the virus, is for the first time experiencing freedom from her husband's controlling and violent behavior. She struggles to manage in her new reality and is by far the most frantic, panicked character in the book. Katie, our other heroine, struggles to stay strong for Jenni, all the while dealing with her own loss - the death of her wife. Jenni and Katie form a bond and become very fascinating characters to read about.

The only negative remark I have for this book is that the love story between Katie and Travis (a man helping keep a small town afloat during the crisis) is a little bit too 'storybook romance' for me. Their instant connection and trust with each other seems out of place with the realism in the rest of the story.

I'm excited to read the next in this series. I think you have to be in the right mood to read something in the horror/dystopian genre, but if you are in the mood the this is the book to read!

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Great review! I haven't read a lot of zombie books, but this one has been popping up here and there. Glad you enjoyed it.

Had my morning/afternoon free, too bad the shelf announcement doesn't come until later...
