#10 in the In Death series started out really interesting as it was paying homage to Agathie Christie. Eve is in attendance at a play of Witness to the Prosecution when the lead character is killed on stage and everyone could be guilty. I love a wonderful "who done it". But then the book seemed to slow down a little for me in the middle. There were some great moments with Peabody and McNabb but there seemed to be less with Rourke. But then it picked up again and came roaring back to life. I had solved the mystery pretty early but there were still so many twists and turns that it stayed interesting. And Eve took another step in her humanizing process as she revealed more vulnerability to her friends and to Rourke. Great story as usual.

I don’t even know how to begin to tell you about this book. 125,978 people have rated it on Goodreads at this very moment and the average rating is 4.39 out of 5. Do I really need to say any more?
I’m kicking myself for continually putting this read off. I’ve had it on my kindle for quite some time, but with it being Dystopian, it just didn’t speak to me as much as others. Once I read the first few pages I knew it was going to be good. I just didn’t know that it would be so intense, compelling, mysterious and completely engage me until the very last page (and beyond, I must admit).
Divergent is told from 16 year old, Tris’s (aka Beatrice) pov and is set in the future. The city is divided into factions and each faction has a predominant quality and belief system. The Candor can’t lie. The Amity don’t do conflict. The Erudite believe knowledge is power. The Dauntless are brave and fearless. And finally, Abnegation are selfless. On testing day she discovers she is Divergent, not any one faction and that puts her in extreme danger. As Tris was born in Abnegation and when choosing day came she had to make the ultimate life altering decision either to stay with her family in Abnegation or switch to a faction she felt would allow her to find herself. She absolutely believes she does not have a selfless bone in her body & longs to be free to do and say what she feels. Once you switch, you can never go back.
We follow Tris through her time of choosing and the stages of initiation and training. She is amazingly honest with herself and truly believes she is flawed. She questions everything and everyone & thinks every choice through more than once. I found myself answering her questions to herself and then questioning my own answers long after I finished the book. The story really grabbed me, chewed me up slowly, & didn’t spit me out until the very end. I watched Tris transform in front of my very eyes from a plain unmemorable girl into a courageous and brave young woman who fought for herself, her family & her beliefs.
The story is choc-a-block full of choices, secrets, conflict, betrayal, action, a blossoming romance (wow – Tobias anyone?!), and testing a lifetime of beliefs. If you haven’t read this, or are putting if off like I did - I urge you to read it. You will not regret it.
I am very very much looking forward to reading the second book - Insurgent...
Jodie I also read Divergent for this weeks bingo shelf, and pretty much feel the same way you do about this book, I didn't think I was going to like it as much as I did, but I find I can't stop thinking about it, it was that good. I'm going right out on pay day to get book 2 so I can keep on going with the series :)
It really stays with you doesn't it Kat? I had wanted to start some others on my list as I have so much I want to read (like yesterday), but I'm going to have to go straight onto Insurgent! Let me know what you think when you get to it :) But before I do, what did you think of Tobias?
I loved him!! I thought he was just great he had such a great presence about him weather he was being all soft and gentle with Tris or being the hard as nails instructor he just had such a great way about him that made you totally fall in love with him, he's probably my favorite YA hero out there :)

@ Leslie - I didn't lover Hunger Games & I try to avoid dystopian wherever I can, but I honestly got really involved in the world building (which I am known for skipping), and the story as a whole - even the political side. I didn't want to kill the main character so that was a really pleasant change, and the romance wasn't a huge part of the story. Everything was so intriguing.@ Kat - me too. He wasn't over the top protective, and didn't wear his heart on his sleeve. I loved that he was flawed (heights) and also that it wasn't love at first sight. I really enjoyed watching them get to know each other. And the fear simulation? Wow, those 2 are like ying & yang. I really loved that they were honest with each other and didn't beat around the bush playing games. I can't wait to start Insurgent.
Am loving the look of our Bingo Card ladies. Crossing my fingers for Paranormal Fantasy shelf call this week :D
You pretty much said it all right there Jodie, Divergent really is one of the best dystopian novels out there and I understand now why people have been rating it so highly, such a great book! :)
About to be a downer here, a voice from the non-lovers of Divergent.I love everyone's enthusiasm over Divergent, but I must confess I'm in the minority of people who didn't love it. I enjoyed it, but needed a little more sensical world building, especially the factions. Who in their right mind would ever expect that to work?! Exciting as heck to read though, very action-packed. Good, but IMHO, not amazing.
I haven't even started my book this week, but I will get to it since we do have a chance at bingo come the weekend!
I'm glad you shared Vivian, I can see how it wouldn't be a book for everyone. I think because it's YA too. It was just the book I needed to get back into reading. It was a solid 4 stars for me :)
I have my book all ready if paranormal fantasy is called. We can start a chant!And I love hearing different opinions about books that everyone loves. There are a few out there that I'm not crazy about - Outlander and Hunger Games come to mind. But normally distopian and YA would be enough for me to stay far far away LOL. As I've said before - I have enough young adults in my real life, I don't need to read about them.

Oh no, Leslie, Outlander is my favorite- favorite series. I read it every year. I just found out they are making a HBO or Showtime series of the books. I gasped out loud when you said you didn't like it. while I admit that I could use an Outlander intervention..I will respectfully acknowledge your right to have your own opinion. Even if it is wrong..Ha Ha. I kid. Seriously though, I am one of those nuts that would dress up like my favorite character and go to a convention of other nuts. I have a friend who feels strongly about Gone with the Wind and I can't get past the fisr few chapters of that one. Many a heated conversation later - we decided not to talk about it anymore. Do you have a book like that?
For this weeks shelf I'd like to read H.P. Mallory's To Kill a Warlock. It has a bunch of 2011 shelves listed.. That what I am looking for right? I don't know what is wrong with me and picking these books.I got the first few of the series cheap on Barnes and Noble.
Sorry for the slow start this week but I had to finish Lethal Rider. It was soo good. I'm so glad to only have to wait until December for the next book. I hope it isn't the last of the series.
Lisa, I looked and it is on the 2011 shelf. As to Outlander, I usually say I don't like it in a hushed tone of voice. And I only like the first half of Gone With The Wind! I got my daughters to watch the movie this summer and they were so mad at me! They have inherited my fixation on a HEA in all things LOL I'm trying to think if I have a book that I am that obsessed with. I can't think of anything recently I've read that is like that. There were books I read when I was younger that I felt that strongly about.
*whispers* - I haven't gotten past page two of Outlander. I keep hearing about this Jamie fellow, but have yet to meet him on the page. One day, I tell myself. ETA: I'm not a historical romance person and it's just too big a book to read if I don't think I'll enjoy it.But Hunger Games. Leslie, I gasped out loud at that, haha. I love how similar and different everyone's tastes are.
Although I haven't read it in awhile, I love Ender's Game. I always tell people to read Ender's Game, then Ender's Shadow because Bean's story is awesomesauce. Not everyone loves the books, but I still recommend it :)

Wow, this was so much more emotional than I expected it to be. Forget the Seth drama. Georgina's dream just about broke my heart. If we're talking about preying on someone's weakness, this one will do the job. I hope she gets her happy ending by the end of this series.
Reading this book, I came to understand what I've been missing out on with Richelle Mead. She creates these characters who are able to draw so many emotions out of you. Literally, it's an emotional roller coaster, but with the lighthearted snarky dialogue that I've come to expect with UF that never fails to entertain. It's a mix that kept me engaged from beginning to end. The mystery part of the books so far are just okay, but I'm so caught up in Georgina's personal drama it just doesn't matter. So much heartache in this one.
Seth. I knew he was going to do something that made everyone want to throw away their Team Seth shirts and it got pretty obvious what he would do and with who early on in the book. I'm disappointed in him because I think he was shown to be a better person than that. Personally, I think Georgina can do better and find someone she's more compatible with. I hope he finds happiness but he doesn't deserve it with Georgina and I hope she doesn't give him another chance.
Niphon is such a despicable character, but I have a feeling he'll get what's coming to him, especially with the (view spoiler) storyline that was introduced.
What is up with Jerome not taking Georgina seriously? He should know better by now.
And the angels. Love the way they're portrayed and Carter has grown on me quite a bit. I'd be on board to read more about him.
So in conclusion, love the characters and looking forward to continuing the series.
I hate, loathe & detest Gone with the Wind. *ducks quickly* The only reason I've seen the movie was that I was shanghaied at a friends parents house & I couldn't escape. I haven't read Ender but I understand it has been compared to Ready Player One and I really loved that one. (Made me sorry I donated my Atari set). I think it is already on my list but I'll be sure to move it to the top.

Sandra - skip the other Ender books and go to Ender's Shadow! It's technically the start of the Bean series and some of it takes place during the same time period as Ender's Game. Lisa - I am totally going to go and find the Michael Kors perfume now because I'm curious. I want to read the other books soon, but it's somewhat dependent on my library and time. Oh, just checked and the next book is n the shelf and at a nearby branch, so I'm going to read Succubus Heat for this week's shelf.

Hi Team 6. I was having trouble posting last night. I had my review and book selection for this week but I kept getting an error from good reads.. I'll be back tonight with my 2011 review (again, fingers crossed). I am going to continue the Dulcie O'Neil series for the Magic shelf:

This is going to be a crazy week for me - I've got Hurricane evacuees (mom and friend and dogs) heading up to my house. Isaac is planning on coming ashore on the 7th anniversary of Katrina - really poor planning LOL. People are very nervous in NO. Luckily this is not a winning week, not sure I'd get my reading done.

Sounds like a crazy week Leslie. Hope Isaac doesn't wreak too much havoc over in NO. Leah, the dragon boat festival sounds like a lot of fun! I've seen some pictures and the boats are so colorful.

Thanks, everyone! My mom arrived safely after a 7 hour drive (should only take 5). The biggest problem from Isaac will be the rain. The pumps in NO can only handle an inch an hour of rain - or the soup bowl begins to fill up. But it's lovely to get a visit with her. I should have my magic book done by Thursday. This was a great ending to the Curseworker series! Full of the twists and turns that we have come to expect from the series, along with a mix of emotional drama and action scenes! I won't say much other than that, except that YES you must have read the first two in this series to understand this one, and that YES if you liked the first two, then you will love this one as well.
The only reason for the four stars instead of five is because the ending did leave a few unanswered questions. What was going to happen with the rest of his family members? What future will Lila have in her dad's organization? I was curious for more... but maybe this is a good thing; just a sign of an engrossing read!

I'm surprised by how much I'm loving this series and how quickly I'm tearing through these books. I've already started book 5 and am completely sucked into Georgina's world.
This was the first book where I didn't completely know who the big bad was from the very beginning, which is always a plus.
I'm not from Canada, but I did laugh at a lot of the Canadian references. I expect Canadians would get a chuckle or two out of them. In addition to that, the book is truly entertaining. It's full of wit and snark in the best way possible.
Oh, the angst in this series. We love Seth, then we're mad at him, then we're back to love, then again back to calling him stupid. It's all so dramatic in the best way possible. Richelle Mead creates the best characters, filled with realistic complexity and you get pulled into all the emotions that Georgina goes through.
And because Seth isn't enough drama, a certain character comes back and while I'm enjoying his return, I'm getting a little sick of so many guys falling madly and deeply in love with Georgina, succubus or not.
Off to continue Succubus Shadows!

I agree, glad we convreted someone else to Richelle Mead's awesomeness!!Also, totally agree about the angst in the series. The succubus series is one series where I actually couldn't decide whether I liked the main love interest (Seth). I kept going back and forth one whether him and Georgina should be together, just like Georgina was feeling.
Yup, Richelle Mead is new to me. I love Carter too! And Seth, oh boy. With books 4 and what I've read of 5, I like him again, but sure I'll change my mind a couple more times before the end of the series. I haven't had this much fun and excitement with a new series in awhile :)

That being said, I thought the ending was great. I was really satified with the whole wrap up and didnt really see it coming - not fully anyhow.
I have read her dark swan series with eugenie - and that was good too. Didn't love it quite as much but it was decidedly different then Georgina and ended in a handful of books. Richelle sure knows how to go out on top.

Dulcie O'Neil is a fairy that makes her living as a Regulator. She is a policewoman of sorts - monitoring the creatures of the Netherworld that have come topside to mingle with the humans. Not a new story. However, Mallory's writing style (conversational) makes it fun and new (ish). The basis is a police investigation with a bit of humor, steamy scenes and bumbling luck. The action is fast paced and all the usual suspects are accounted for: Vamps, shape shifters, elves, demons and trolls. Of course, there is a love triangle with a Good Guy gone bad and a Bad Guy that may or may not be good. All and all - a light and easy story. I think the bones of the book were good - it could have used a little more meat but I still enjoyed it.
