SOLVED. Girl who lives on a farm and wants to go to college. [s]

I remember almost all of the details except the title and author.

So, there is a girl and her mother is dead so she lives on a farm with her father and sisters. Her brother left them. Her father wants her to help on the farm but she wants to go to school.
A new teacher at her school encourages her to go to college. At the end we find out the teacher is in fact a controversial and famous author.
During the course of the novel her friend gets married and has babies.
The main character gets a job as a waitress in town where there is a perverted man. Her friends and her set him up and humiliate him.
I think she gets engaged but ends up breaking that off. Her boyfriend just wanted to marry her to inherit her land.His father is having an affair wiith a poor woman with lots of children.
