Jack Wallen (jack_wallen) | 16 comments I can't tell you how thrilled I am to see people chatting up my book I Zombie I! And don't forget, when you finish that one -- the saga continues with My Zombie My and then (hopefully at the end of November) concludes with Die Zombie Die.

I will be returning to that same world (destroyed by the Mengele Virus) soon after with a new series called The Book of Jacob. I won't give out any information about that series just yet, due to the fact it would give away too much about the first series (and I don't want to spoil anything for anyone). The new series will take place 30 years after Die Zombie Die...and will be darker.

Kat (katzombie) | 15 comments Oh and I loved Zombie Fallout (I've learned to overlook the typo/grammar errors in books but it still irks me! I always want to email the author my list of nitpicks!), I've read the first three earlier this year, and I have the fourth in my TBR.

P.J. Kelley If you like Zombie books, please take a look at my books, the ZOMBIE WORLD ORDER series. Part One is called ZOMBIE WORLD ORDER. Part Two is DEAD TO RIGHTS: ZOMBIE WORLD ORDER PART TWO.

Sorry for the shameless self-promotion. In my defense, I could really use some honest feedback on the books. I just joined Facebook, so if anybody here wants to friend me or whatever, that would be great. Thanks.

Shawn Riddle | 11 comments I just edited and released a new collection of short stories with KnightWatch press called "Soul Survivors Hometown Tales" that is heavy on the zombie side for the stories. Feel free to check it out and let me know what you think. It features a story from Patrick D'Orazio and 12 others. Mr Jonathan Maberry was kind enough to endorse the book and Joe McKinney and David Moody wrote the introductions for us. :)

Mike | 1 comments Hi Jonathan,

Im a huge fan of the genre and think you have made some terrific contributions to it, especially Rot and Ruin and Dust and Decay. They are my favourite novels along with Mira Grants Feed and Deadline.

message 77: by [deleted user] (new)

I am floored by how good this anthology is. Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! The works eschew the latest trend in splatter-core and go to the heart of the Haitian, supernatural, and deeply personal nature of the dead brought to life, with selections from pulp adventure and modern psychological horror.

I wholeheratedly agree with Mark on this one, Pontypool Changes Everything (novel) and Pontypool (movie) are great examples of how zombie fiction can be both entertaining and cerebral.

I remember reading The Rats and being totally creeped out. Loved reading Herbert's stuff when I was going through a big horror phase in the late '70s.

David P Forsyth (daidpforsyth) | 352 comments Voyage of the Dead by David P. Forsyth Flotilla of the Dead (Sovereign Spirit Saga #2) by David P. Forsyth
Voyage of the Dead and Flotilla of the Dead have been well received (selling a thousand copies per month with 4+ average ratings). The Sovereign Spirit Saga is a sci-fi-adventure set in a horror genre. Think Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica meet the Walking Dead in the setting of a 2012 zombie apocalypse. This is not a hopeless cause. It's more about using your brains than eating them. Just imagine where you would want to be and this is probably it.

message 88: by Karol (new)

Karol Becker | 8 comments I'm giving "My Life in the Zombie Apocalypse: Bettie Page and the Chicken Ranch War" five stars because, as Roger Ebert has noted in his movie reviews, that the "grade" given to a film (in this case a book) should also take into account how well it delivers within its genre. Often reviewers seem to "punish" a book for not being in one of their preferred genres by taking away a star. Those reviews usual begin with "Normally I wouldn't read a book in this genre, but..." and then continue from there. The thing is...that word "but" says a lot. I don't like romance novels, BUT if I read one and it's well written, holds my attention, and delivers what the fans expect...and a little more...I would give it a high rating without regard to my personal tastes.

I'm also someone who normally wouldn't pick up a zombie novel (though I love the Walking Dead TV series)...but this was recommended to me, so I read it and I liked it and I found a thing or two in it that I thought elevated it beyond my expectations for the genre. This sometimes comic and often brutal story detailing a fateful grocery run and encounter with a family of sick, twisted, and brutish hillbillies hits all the right "buttons" in terms of a horror/adventure story set in the zombie apocalypse (think "Deliverance" meets "Night of the Living Dead" with muscle cars and a blimp from Oz), it also has a lot to say about PEOPLE and the way our desensitization to violence causes our own brutishness to emerge when society breaks down and the rule of law (not to mention, common notions of morality) is suspended. The zombie genre seems to present an excuse for people to behave badly...very, VERY badly...because zombies are "undead" we (through the characters in these stories) are let off the hook for indulging in all manner of depravity when it comes to eradicating the undead threat...but just how far can you allow that to go? To miss-quote (paraphrase) a line from an underrated film (8mm) by the same writer who wrote "Se7en," "Some people look at [some things] and they throw up, while others look at [the same thing] and fall in love." Humanity's reaction (in this book) is a bit like that...as is our culture's current obsession with the genre...

The book itself starts out light and then gets nasty (which might catch the reader a bit off-guard)...it is fast-paced, vulgar, blunt, at times twisted and tasteless, and begs for a heavy metal soundtrack of its own as the "hero" relates observations and tales of humanity's often dim and misguided efforts to carve out an existence in an upside-down world filled with zombies. Small town politics, nepotism, racism, religion, sexism, rednecks, the military, inbreeding, and society's often glaring lack of common sense - all are skewered by the author with sarcastic, cynical glee...all before the protagonist and his friends are dragged into a hellish encounter with a wanna-be gangster type and a family of inbreeds who, I am sure, would not only survive, but would revel in such a world. How realistic is all of this? Well...I personally would like to think people would behave morally and come together constructively in an "apocalypse" (I'm a bleeding-heart, what can I say) but the author isn't really trying to tell a "realistic story" (like "The Road" for example), but instead is spinning a yarn in a more cinematic vein...and I do think this story would make a darned fine B-movie. Ultimately, I'm pretty sure that's what the author intends...so don't approach it expecting a literary masterpiece (though it's well written). In a world of filet mignon and cheeseburgers, this is a Double Whopper with cheese (a little over done) and a side of fries with LOTS of ketchup.

Blood, guts, explosions, fetishistic gun play, allusions to pin-up queens, a big black car, and zombies...all wrapped up in a moral or two with nihilistic glee. My Life in the Zombie Apocalypse delivers. Five stars.
