Emma Gerber THIS BOOK WAS GREAT I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT I LOVED IT!!!!!!!

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ No, they don't. Jonas appears in Gathering Blue, The Messenger, and Son. Gabe appears in Son.
The ending is pretty disappointing and I think could be made better with a fifth book about the aftermath of Jonas leaving.

Out of curiosity, did you ever read Son? The one about Gabe's mother?

Daniella It's not really about if they make it but more about your perspective. Is the glass half full or empty its all about how you personally want it to end....

message 305: by Megan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Megan Just curious, for those who have read the sequels, was anyone else extremely disappointed? I liked The Giver, but it was a completely different tone from the others. It seemed almost futuristic (with all the technology and science) while the communities in the other books had never even heard of the most basic things... like medicine! Not to mention that almost every time that events from past books were mentioned in sequels, there were discrepancies to timing and precise events. This was especially prevalent with descriptions between The Giver and Son. It felt like Lowry didn't even go back and "fact check" her own work... it was just all around disappointing. I wish I had only read The Giver.

message 306: by Jason (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jason L. My first thought upon finishing it is that Jonas never left the community, or was captured during their sleep after the drones were gone. Think about it, their plan changed drastically and the ending was so short and swift. Perhaps somehow the elders knew his plan, captured him, and Released him, and he somehow got the echo of music because maybe the Giver was Released too, and his memory got out.

Or is it just me?

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ Jason wrote: "My first thought upon finishing it is that Jonas never left the community, or was captured during their sleep after the drones were gone. Think about it, their plan changed drastically and the endi..."

It's you.
There's three more books in The Giver saga and the last two explain where Jonas and Gabe are.

And I'm the opposite. I really like the middle two books and was pretty disappointed in Son. I'm not a huge fan of The Giver itself.

I also really want Lois to write a fifth book talking about the after effects of Jonas taking off with Gabe.

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ Daniella wrote: "It's not really about if they make it but more about your perspective. Is the glass half full or empty its all about how you personally want it to end...."

Except the other three books in the saga say otherwise.

Nothing like a sequel to ruin an ambiguous ending!

Nothing like 3 other books to make up for a shitty ending from a book that really had no plot or purpose.

message 313: by Allen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Allen Berry Yikes! I take it you didn't like it?

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ Allen wrote: "Yikes! I take it you didn't like it?"

The first book, not so much. It felt unfinished to me and very lacking. I will never knock it for getting children to read though, because it did.

However, I felt the other three books helped tie the first book to a world that really needed to be explored. The fourth books left me wanting a more though; specifically, a fifth book that shows us what happened after Jonas's took Gabriel and left. I really want to see his homeland being brought into the real world of colors and emotions and life and finding out that those they loved and unfortunate babies were killed off if/when they weren't perfect.
I want to see Jonas's father have remorse for the things he did, even though he was programmed to do them and see them as the right thing. I want to see the town regain the memories stolen from them and become whole.
Yes, they did send Jonas those books and as Jonas said, he thinks it was a peace offering and if so, how did they know where Jonas was? Did those books even come from them in the first place.

I, personally feel, the series needs a sense of closure and it hasn't been completely given yet.

message 315: by Allen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Allen Berry Ah, I see what you mean. I read the first novel as part of a Utopian/Dystopian lit course. I never delved into the others...I had no idea that there were five.

Yeah, lack of closure is a pain. :(

message 316: by Holly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Holly Guys - please note that this discussion does include readers who enjoyed the book.

message 317: by Allen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Allen Berry OK... I enjoyed the book. I don't see a problem with someone else not enjoying it. It certainly doesn't change my opinion of the book, and as an English prof, I'd be the last person to criticize someone else's well considered opinion of the books.

message 318: by Petar (new)

Petar Jurkovic In the movie they die (sled wait for them), in a book they stay alive.

message 319: by Rachel (new) - rated it 5 stars

Rachel In all 4 books (The Giver, Gathering Blue, The Messenger, and Son) Jonas and Gabe are both alive

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ Holly wrote: "Guys - please note that this discussion does include readers who enjoyed the book."

No one is saying other wise. People are allowed to have a conversation, even if it's about something they didn't enjoy.

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ Allen wrote: "Ah, I see what you mean. I read the first novel as part of a Utopian/Dystopian lit course. I never delved into the others...I had no idea that there were five.

There's only four. I just wish there was a fifth one to give a sense of closure of what happened where Jonas was born. Especially since Gabe's mother finds out she's his mom and takes off to find him.

shelsel.lh No, they reach elsewhere. Read the rest in the series of the giver by Lois lowery

Joey_T_ They do not die in the end, the pass the boundary of memories, but it doesn't officially say in the book or movie that gabe and Jonas die.

Aamina i hope they don't cos the sequel 'gathering blue' has nothing to do with them

I can't remember if Gathering Blue references Jonas or not; but Messenger does and The Son has both of them in it.

Ok. Then I suppose they MUST be alive haha. :) Thanks.

message 332: by Scarlett (new)

Scarlett Who is “they” is? And why are “they” waiting for Jonas and the baby?

Georgia I have read gathering blue but it's annoying that Jonas does not make an appearance

message 334: by Louisa (last edited Apr 20, 2015 06:42AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Louisa Smith IF they aren't dead, then why is a sled at the top of the hill? Who goes to the top of a snowy hill and just leaves a sled there in the hopes that someone may come along a use it? Either Jonas is dead and reaching the top of the hill is like reaching heaven, or it is all a dream.

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ They're not dead. I don't know what they did in the movie besides screw everything up, but, they're not dead. There's three other books and one of them talks about how they're rescued.

message 336: by Susan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Susan Bernhardt Angela wrote: "I actually thought that this was just a novel, I didn't know that it was a series!!!!"

I think The Giver would have been better as a stand-alone book and not a series.

Katrina It originally was. I think the second was more forced out of her because of people. I haven't read the second for that reason.

message 338: by Louisa (new) - rated it 2 stars

Louisa Smith So they are wandering down this road with no idea where they are going and just as he can't take another step-- that is when a sled just happens to be there at the top of the hill? how is that at all plausible?

Katrina It's not. The author said she wrote the ending for the reader to interpret. I had an English teacher who, for the longest time, thought Jonas and Gabe just went in a large circle back to the community changed back to the world as it was.

message 340: by Louisa (new) - rated it 2 stars

Louisa Smith I like that concept! That makes sense to me. While they are gone, the community has to handle the memories themselves, the Giver helps them handle them just as he helped Jonas handle them, and now things are they way they ought to be-- with pain, color, disappointment, passion, music, violence, etc. But that interpretation otherwise doesn't square with what happens in the sequels, right?

Katrina I don't know. Like I said I didn't read the second. But I think it's about a different group of people.

message 342: by Louisa (new) - rated it 2 stars

Louisa Smith Thanks Katrina! I may bump up the book from 2 to 3 stars based on your feedback!

Katrina Cool! For me the first read through was rough. But now I love the giver. It's one of those books that I hate reading but love the story.

message 344: by Naufal (new)

Naufal Caesarialdy it bothers me so much, to see the ending. I've read your comments, and still unsatisfied. 1 more question. IS FIONA AND JONAS GET TO BE TOGETHER? *sorry for my bad english.

MJ Codename: ♕Duchess♕ I can't remember if they do.

I just wish there was a fifth book that shows what happened when Jonas's community got their memories back and had to deal with it.

Yoosong I love this book. I love the ending even more.
The ending is a mystery. I thought about some possibilities, but I don't think Jonas and Gabe die. Obviously, they are in the next 3 series.

message 349: by Fart (last edited May 27, 2015 11:12AM) (new)

Fart This was a good book. I liked it alot. Sometimes, I lay up at night thinking about the book. I liked the dream Jonas had with Fiona. I wanted to be the bathtub. I also liked the part when Jonas had the sled ride at the end, like in the beginning. I read it over and over replacing the sled with a bathtub. When I was a kid, I used to have lots of fun in the bathtub. I had a toy that made a sound when you squeezed it. It was purple. Just like the color of Jonas eyes.
