WHAT?????????????? jonas was not crazy the community was real........like everything else in the book :/

Madelyn I know that they don't die but I always liked the idea that they did die and that 'somewhere else' was heaven

SAME. I know that there's like a sequel or whatever that Jonas and Gabe appear in, but I've always liked the Elsewhere = heaven theory and prefer to believe in that one!

message 454: by T (new) - rated it 5 stars

T I think it makes the most sense that they would die...but the little hopeful part of me wants them not too.

Inventor Spoiler Alert!!!! No. They do not die at the end.

Inventor Ava wrote: "HATED THE STINKIN' BOOK"

Braidyn Andrews I know I'm a little late lol but I think they really sacrificed themselves to go into Elsewhere and to save the community from their dull lives :)

Kimberly Basso Taken alone, I had two very different reactions to ending of The Giver, a book I adore. The first time I read it, I was depressed for a week, convinced that they didn't make it. The second time I read it, for some reason the music made me certain that they were going to be fine. I haven't had the guts to read it again, because I'd like to leave them in a happy place. Which I'm sure is a result of my now being a parent. Either way, I think it's a remarkably well written ending, for the very reason that the author doesn't decide for us. She took us on this journey, and managed to make either outcome completely plausible. As a writer, I find that impressive.

message 459: by Cora (new) - rated it 4 stars

Cora I have a tendency to think everyone dies at the end of books if its unclear, so yeah probably.

This was the best response to this question that I've ever read. Thank you.

message 461: by Jianna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jianna Theyel No. They don't die. The Giver is the first of 4 books.

Christian Zerangue I do not think they die but I do believe that they find a new place to live and a new place to live considering the fact that they did not see what they saw in their previous community.

message 463: by Anya (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anya I think they definitely died. Jonas saw what he needed to see at the end. He saw love, he saw a home.

message 464: by Joudy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Joudy Madian No
I don't think so

Octavio Tavo They are dead

MoodyReader2.0 Jonas and Gabriel did not die. And the community was real not Jonas's imagination. In the end after there journeg ends Jonas reacges a nothing civilization where there is hope and love and humanity.
All those who are unclear of what happens after the ending are recommended to read Gathering Blue, Messenger and Son.

MoodyReader2.0 SPOILERS:
Jonas becomes the leader to the new community that he had reached after escaping from his hometown. I dont remember exactly, but i think it is Messenger when readers find out this information. Jonas even gets married and has 2 kids with Katherine from Gathering Blue.

message 470: by Gretal (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gretal Amanda wrote: "First read Gathering Blue, and then The Messenger. Be patient, because they seem like they don't answer your question, but in the end they do."

Also make sure to read Son, the last book.

message 471: by Gretal (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gretal Katrina wrote: "Yeah, i think she also said she didn't mean for it to seem like they died. My english teacher's guess was they had gone in a big circle and went back to the community but now they had memories!"

No, it's not the same community.

message 472: by Gretal (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gretal Prarthana wrote: "I don't know.... I kinda don't like science fiction books... and I didn't get some parts of the book..... :("

It's not really science fiction. It's dystopian.

Amanda Artist Cat There were sequels of the Giver that shows Jonas and Gabe in another community, so yes, they are still alive.
Howeveeer, I don't like the sequels, and the story would have been much more complex IF Jonas and Gabe reached Elsewhere (alias died) instead of happily ever after. I would prefer the author to leave the ending lose, so we can discuss and debate 😊

message 474: by Audrey (new) - rated it 2 stars

Audrey yeah

message 475: by Mandii (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mandii Sophia wrote: "I think the finally reach elsewhere. What about you?"

I think the same way. After all the hardships they went through I feel like the author sort of rewarded them by letting them reach elsewhere.

message 476: by Mary (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mary Payne The final sequel of "The Giver" is called "The Son" (2012). It definitively answers the question. Lowry brings readers to the edge of their seats! It's a whale of a climax! The set up is the first book, but in my mind, the last of the four books is the best.

message 477: by J. (new) - rated it 5 stars

J. Moody Hylian Princess wrote: "Sophia wrote: "I think the finally reach elsewhere. What about you?"

Agreed! The Giver as a stand alone novel leaves it open for you to decide. I always felt that the sled being there from his memories was a giveaway that they had died, but she left it vague for the sake of child readers. Changing it for a sequel so she could keep the story going made sense, but it's hard not to believe that her initial intention was to hint at their death.

message 478: by Gaby (new) - rated it 3 stars

Gaby I read this for school but I did actually enjoy it. I like reading dystopian books so this was right up my alley. The ending was a little confusing and to be honest, disappointing but overall a great book. To answer the question, I think the author kind of leaves it up to us to find out what happens to Jonas(Middle School me was very mad about this ending). I would like to hope that Jonas and Gabe end up somewhere where they can survive and have a Happy(?) life, but who knows.

Daphné Sophia wrote: "I think the finally reach elsewhere. What about you?"

I agree!

Paige Turner Their journey doesn't end in the Giver. If you pay extreme attention in the next books, you will see clues showing Jonas and Gabe at different settlements.

yes they are alive in the other books. They settle into other towns.

Paige Turner adaynasmile wrote: "Definitely take the time to read Gathering Blue and The Messenger. Both are excellent books. The Giver is by far the best of the three (in my opinion, I've only read it a ton of times in the last 1..."
I completely agree. The giver is the best but all the books are really good.

message 483: by H (new) - rated it 4 stars

H Bankston nope they don't die

message 484: by H (new) - rated it 4 stars

H Bankston actually I have no freaking idea the end of the book is a confusing christian metaphor

message 485: by sanije (new) - rated it 3 stars

sanije Spoilers-

In the rest of the series, we find the answer to this question- they survive, and enter a different community.

message 486: by Rye (new) - rated it 4 stars

Rye Bread I think they were supposed to and then the author needed to make some cash and wrote a sequel with them alive in it.

message 487: by Emmy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Emmy What books are similar to this book?

Annabelle ok, so I dont want to spoil ANYTHING but no, they don't die and just to warn anyone... finding blue IS gonna be pretty slow but just keep reminding yourself you wanna finish the series and you need to read finding blue to do that

message 489: by Oreo (new) - rated it 5 stars

Oreo I read this book last year, but I would say they made it to a new place. They made it to elsewhere. The place no one in the community has been or has returned to tell the tell.

message 490: by Claire (new) - rated it 5 stars

Claire no, they're alive bc there's other books featuring gabe and jonas

message 491: by Ruth (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ruth Pauw I loved the book, and the end left open for interpretation gives a great ending, where analysis is open. Love the option for all perspectives there.

message 492: by Sania (new)

Sania Arshad OMGG u need to read son its the pov of Gabe's mom n basically Gabe n Jonas live

Harrison Liggett I do because it would not be a good plot

message 494: by Max (new) - rated it 1 star

Max Morris He definetly died. The way they portray the ending like he falls asleep or something? He froze to death with Gabe, god, this writer really knows how to kill a vibe!
