Allison | 1704 comments So envious, May!!

I was like that all during schooling years. I’d take a book everywhere and my mom would call my name when it was time to go and she’d have to finally come shake me because she had called so many times and I never looked up.

Now.....ugh. Someone says one word two apartments away and I get all huffy. I like SILENCE! Luckily my apartment complex is pretty quiet.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I have trained myself to read on the tram. It's either that or be driven mad by the foibles of the other travelers.

I read in airport gate lounges when traveling, and in my hotel room at night before bed. Oh, and work on my lunch break.

Otherwise, my happy reading place is my chair in my living room with a plentiful supply of snacks on hand.

message 1253: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) All you poor people. I can read anywhere. I'm happy to read a page or 200 pages or more, in one go. In any lineup, at the airport, in the plane, at a hotel, in the car, on the train, in the subway, inside, outside, at home in bed, at home in any chair, at home waiting for cookies to come out of the oven, at the lake, by a river, in the ocean, at a sports game, at a coffee shop.....lol

Now I'm sounding like Dr. Seuss.

Terri | 19576 comments Yeah, we are a sorry lot. Allie, Margaret and I.
I need silence too. If my husband comes in to open the wardrobe and get something out, he always gets a loud sigh from me and I have to put the book down until he leaves.

Once silence returns, I start reading again. And it will take me a few paragraphs to get back into the book.

Its that old concentration thing again.

Terri | 19576 comments p.s I couldn't read while there were cookies cooking. I'd be hanging around the kitchen watching the oven and counting down the clock.

Dawn can read in a chair
Dawn can read in the air
Dawn can read in her lair
Dawn can read most anywhere.

Love this!!! Maybe, margaret is the new Dr Seuss!!

message 1264: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Yeah, I loved it so much I put it in my profile. I thought it was appropriate for the 'About Me' section. :)

Terri | 19576 comments June Group Read Poll is open. Closes on the 14th.
https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/5...

I voted for Blood Forest Blood Forest by Geraint Jones
Not into Roman hist fic, only I read a sample of this one on Amazon and it reads well (at least, it does in the opening pages). So
I voted for it and I may buy it and read it in the group read if it wins.

Terri | 19576 comments The July Group Read Poll is open.
https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/5...

Unfortunately for our American members, this book is probably not due out in the US until next year. It is due out everywhere else in June (this month).

US members are going to have to buy it in paper via Amazon dot UK or Book Depository if you want to read it this year.

Usually I try to include books that are published everywhere already. But this one will probably be promoted a lot outside America as the historical mystery read of the year. So I decided to put it in, knowing that we have plenty of US members who buy paper books (not digital) and buy their books from UK sites.

Gretchen (eab2012) I love Fremantle's work. I'll buy an overseas copy.

message 1270: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments What else has she written, Gretchen. Does she also write under Elizabeth Fremantle?

I nearly put The Girl in the Glass Tower in the poll instead because it has been released everywhere. But ended up going with The Poison Bed

Yes. They are the same author. Her only other works have been Tudor era. Queen's Gambit was much better than The Girl in the Glass Tower in my opinion. Only because I think it's hard to write anything about someone like an Arabella Stuart when we know so little about her.

message 1272: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I'll keep Queen's Gambit up my sleeve for a future poll instead of the Glass Tower one. I had a look at its page and it certainly does review better.

message 1273: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Jun 18, 2018 05:35PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments The Poison Bed is going to win the Poll by the looks. Shame so few voted on the Poll. Only 40-something.

I knew it wouldn't get many votes because Goodreads is an American website and this book is not yet out in America.

Hopefully we'll get more a couple people reading the thread and in the coming months, as the book appears more and more often in libraries and shops outside of the US, more readers will drop by the thread and share their thoughts.

I am waiting for my library to get this one. As I don't know the author, and the book does not have the cheapie paperback out yet, I didn't want to buy.
Hopefully the library gets it in just in time for me to join in on the group read in July.

message 1274: by May (new)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Terri, you are correct... hard to vote for a book I cannot access. Prior recommendations to use the BookDepository were very helpful. But it can take 6-8 weeks to get an ordered book. Felt like forever to get our copy of THE HARROWING!!

Book Depository has a very good selection but wow, it takes forever to get a book I've ordered.

message 1276: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I am a bit hit and miss with The Book Depository when it comes to delivery times.
Sometimes I get them super quick and I am amazed. But mostly it takes about three weeks.

message 1277: by Renata (new)

Renata (rderis) | 236 comments Funny May, I’m not so far from you, and so far I’ve always received books from them within a week or two? I’m ordering the Poison Bed and hoping to join in July’s read (along with Lancelot and, Kingdom Come - other titles I’ve been jonesing for from this side of the pond lol).

message 1278: by May (new)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Renata, I don’t necessarily think it is the shipping distance. May be the availablity if the book. Maybe??? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I really enjoyed Queen's Gambit and Sisters of Treason but was sadly disappointed with The Girl in the Glass Tower. I have yet to read Watch the Lady (third book in her Tudor Trilogy).

One of my local libraries has The Poison Bed on order. Hopefully it won't take too long to arrive.

message 1281: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I'm a little disappointed that I didn't pick Queen's Gambit for the Poll. I think I may have gotten them mixed up. It was after I posted the Poll that I looked and saw the book was only released in the Commonwealth.
If I had a do-over, it would have been Queen's Gambit.

Oh well. Expect it in a future Poll! :)

All good. I wasn't aware of her new book so I'm glad you got it on my radar 😊

message 1283: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments It's good that it is starting to show up in Commonwealth libraries. Maybe it will show up in mine just in time for group read. I was sceptical.

I enjoyed them all except the Girl in the Glass Tower. Didn't know she had a new one out.

message 1285: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Usually I do the poll between the 7th and 10th of each month.
I don't think there'll be a poll this month. I have had so much on my mind, and it is on my mind still, that I haven't even had a chance to think about or research what books would be good for poll.

Last month I had two in my head to put up and I have forgotten which ones they were!

It is Friday today and we have three big days ahead of us on the farm mustering cattle and moving them from a neighbours place, down the road to our place. Bit stressful.
Once the weekend is over and the stress is behind me, I'll have a think about poll books.

So if there is a Poll to be done this month, I'll post it on the 16th US (17th Australia).

message 1286: by May (new)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Terri, I think we can slip a month and catch up on the stack of books we have on the floor or in the Kindle. I encourage you to take time to catch your breath.

message 1293: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Just catching up here. Thanks all fro not minding that I had a break for a bit. I hope you all did indeed read a poll loser or a group read catch up book. :)

message 1294: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I have been surprised by how close the voting has been on this months poll books.

I voted for the China historical fiction but I thought the European historical fiction would have been the clear winner as members don't often tend to go for hist fic set in Asian countries. At least, that has been my experience with past polls and the discussion activity in the group's Asian threads.

Looks like the European one will win which will be a good group read no doubt. Just goods to see members voting strong for a book set in China's history (that is not Conn Iggulden).

message 1295: by Allison (last edited Oct 24, 2018 08:30PM) (new)

Allison | 1704 comments I was very torn this month!

I went with the European set book because I thought it would be easier to find a copy.

message 1296: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Definitely could be hard to find paper. I know the China one would be a good one for our ebook readers as it is available in all countries and fairly cheap too. But for paper people, it may not be in many US libraries.
A new edition (the one in the poll) was a recent new Penguin edition release in the US this year, so you never know.

I would have to buy it myself, as I just find it too difficult to get to my library.

message 1297: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 103 comments I was able to get The Lost Queen from the library, so I will vote for that & try to get to it. I think I only have it for a couple of weeks, but have it on hold in another library system, so I should be able to work it out.

message 1298: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I'd say it will be the winner for sure.

message 1299: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Gee, the two books this month are neck and neck. Last I checked 21 apiece.

message 1300: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I have always posted group read polls between the 7th and 10th of each month. That was always my thing. Never in the first week of month. Always second week. I also like to give myself 4 days to get it posted in case I can't get to it on a certain day.

Just letting folks know I am now going to trial run it mid month. Between 10th and 14th instead.

It may not work, we'll see. I did this in either October or December and it was fine.
