message 1201: by Raymunda (new)

Raymunda (raymundaj) I have read it and liked it a lot! I think it's a very good choice. I'll be happy to join the discussion

message 1202: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments I've just put it in hold on Overdrive so I'll check it out when it comes through but cannot promise that I can read it!

message 1203: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments I'm not going to reread it but I'll check the discussion from time to time.

message 1204: by Guy (new)

Guy VanHorn (gvhatl) | 36 comments I also plan to read and join in on this one.

message 1205: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I plan to start on Tuesday, but I've heard it's pretty violent and brutal.

Terri | 19576 comments Sounds like it might be a wild ride.

message 1207: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 145 comments I read The North Water several months ago. It's very dark and brutal, but drew a believable picture of whaling in the Arctic -- a subject I'd known nothing about. To avoid spoilers, I won't say any more.

It'll be interesting to learn y'all's reactions.

Terri | 19576 comments Here is the discussion thread for our September group read of The North Water: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

All you folks who have already read it, please feel welcome to join in on the thread. Discussion is not exclusive to people reading it during the group read. :)

Terri | 19576 comments This month is the Mod Off Group Read Poll.
Margaret has picked a favourite book and I have picked a favourite book and we are pitting them against each other.

Going to do the poll a day early (as I like to do them sometimes between the 7th and 9th US time).
Stay tuned.

Terri | 19576 comments I'll try not to pull her hair too much as long as she promises not to scratch my face.

message 1214: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I don't scratch. :)

message 1217: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Damn. I'm scared of needles. Maybe we should just have a foot race.

message 1218: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Buwahahahahahahahahha

message 1219: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I knew a Sherlockian would appreciate the gentle challenge of a foot race.

message 1220: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Sep 15, 2017 10:05PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Well now, the October Group Read Poll is finished and I am free to reveal which Mod nominated which book...although I am sure this will not be news to anybody. You all know who nominated which book right? :)

I nominated Gates of Fire An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae by Steven Pressfield

Margaret nominated The Persian Boy (Alexander the Great, #2) by Mary Renault

It was a close run race. Gates of Fire only won by 9 votes.

I for one am stoked that Gates of Fire won. If I have time I will reread. It is one of my absolute favourites and it will be fun to see a whole new bunch of people read it during October. (as it was a group read five years ago, we have many new members now). But it will also be fun to see some members jump in to reread too. See if you like it more or hate it more than you did when you first read it.

message 1221: by May (new)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments I had intended to reread. However, loaned last year to a friend who has just picked it up to enjoy. Guess I'll be late for the discussion...

Lia (lia_mb) | 638 comments Terri wrote: "... You all know who nominated which book right? ... "

Yep! At least most of us who are lurking long enough here will have an educated guess about it. :)

message 1223: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Definitely! lol. Kind of a dead giveaway to some.

message 1224: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments It was a no brainer LOL :)

message 1225: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I'm so transparent. :D

message 1226: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments It's just that I don't think any picked me for reading military fic. :D

message 1227: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I was expecting Paul Doherty from Margaret though!!

message 1228: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Ha! Maybe in the next Mod Showdown.

I nearly went for An Evil Spirit Out of the West

message 1229: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Such a Doherty tragic. Maybe she doesn't like being as predictable as me. lol :D

message 1230: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Predictability is the hallmark of the conventional. I have NEVER been convential. :D

message 1231: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments Loved your "battle of the mods"!

Can't wait to start Gates of Fire An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae by Steven Pressfield

I can't WAIT for you to start it. I am eager to see the responses of all those who did not read it in the first group read. I can't promise you'll like it or love it, but I think it is safe to say you won't forget it.

message 1234: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments What does IRRC mean happy?

message 1235: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I think he means IIRC - If I Recall Correctly.

Ok got it. Thanks Dawn

message 1238: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments He's too hip for me Terri.

message 1239: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Forgot. No group read poll this month as there is usually not a group read in January.
For those not familiar with this. Each January is usually a 'read a group read you missed month'.

If you are behind on any group reads, January is the chance to catch up before group reads start again in February.

Thanks for posting that I am new to the group and did not know that. I will read either Roseblood or Feast of Sorrow that you read this year.

message 1241: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Oh, hello, Alice. I missed this post of yours and just responded to you on the Roseblood thread. :)
I see now you know this is catch up month.

Hope you are enjoying the group. Lots of great books to find in the discussion threads.

Terri | 19576 comments https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...

March Group Read Poll is up.

Wanted to put up Ill-Made Knight because I can't recall the last time we had a knight based group read book. Was hard to find another knight featured book to go up against it, but as these two books feature Hawkwood and are set in the same time, I thought maybe it would be an interesting poll selection.
Especially if members wanted to read both and compare the tales.

message 1243: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Mar 07, 2018 02:46PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments April group read poll is open. Goes until the 14th of March.

Now, before you say anything about The Witchfinder's Sister. I don't know if this book is honestly fantasy. People have shelved it as fantasy, but when you read the reviews, people are saying more that it has fantasy/paranormal themes, which make you wonder if the paranormal is real fantasy or can be rationalised as not actually paranormal activity.

That's enough for me to decide to put it in the poll. I guess we'll find out if the paranormal stuff can't be rationalised by being the guinea pigs if it wins the poll.

I put it up against Cathar. Hunted like witches in their day. Seemed a good match up for Witchfinder's sister for a theme poll.

message 1244: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I see that with still 5 days to go on the MAY group read poll, that Dunstan (aka The Abbot's Tale ) is leading by a healthy margin.

I would have read the other book, The Winter Isles if it had won (I think I even voted for it..), but I certainly won't mind if Dunstan wins. I started it and will be glad of the prod towards getting back to it.

message 1245: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I read it, but, for the first two weeks of May I'll be overseas and unable to contribute to the discussions.

message 1246: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I'll still be reading it by the end of May/beginning of June no doubt. I'm slow these days, with a few books going at the same time.

message 1247: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I'm the same, unless a book REALLY grabs me.

But when I'm away, I often barely read at all.

message 1248: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Apr 11, 2018 04:27PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I hear that. Unless I am in my comfortable places at home for reading, I cannot read anywhere else (unless I am pushing myself to get something read). I can't concentrate on books away from home.

message 1249: by May (new)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments So sorry, Terri et al... I can read anywhere!! And do! I can shut out the noise in a Terminal, hotel, the backseat of a car. If not at home, my favorite place to get lost in a book is at the Beach!!

message 1250: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I wish I could do that! I just can't shut the world out. Keeps butting back in.
