The choices are..
The Last of the Templars by William WatsonThe Boat of Fate by Keith Roberts"

Either one is worthwhile. I've read both; of course my favorite is the ancient Roman one. :)

message 1152: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I read Cleopatra's Shadows earlier this year. I thought it was excellent. I can't wait for the sequel to be released stateside.

message 1153: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I bought Sons of the Blood the other week from The Book Depository.
I thought it was fairly affordable. But the real cheapie paperback isn't published yet. Just the hardcover and large paperback.

Cleopatra's Shadows, I'm not sure of.

message 1154: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 103 comments My library has Cleopatra's shadows so I will go with that.

Terri | 19576 comments Whatever book loses, don't forget, we have Reading the Losers thread. So if Cleopatra's Shadows ends up losing, members may want to read it together in that thread.

message 1156: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Apr 11, 2017 08:53PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I for one am nervously waiting and hoping for Sons of the Blood to win. I bought it recently and will actually get to join in on a group read for a change.

Seeing as I haven't been reading for a couple years and finally have my hunger to read back, I can't wait to join others in the group read for the first time in years!

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments That's good to hear Terri, and once again, welcome back to the fold :)

message 1158: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Feels good to be back, happy. I guess my brain needed a break and as soon as it felt it had been long enough, the switch flicked and I was back to the old me again. :)

message 1159: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments June Group Read Poll is up.
Choose between..
The Traitor's Niche by Ismail Kadare Feast of Sorrow A Novel of Ancient Rome by Crystal King

I voted for Traitor's Niche. Can't get to my library often, but I will try if that one wins. They have a few copies.

Feast of Sorrows the library doesn't have. Oddly, despite publication dates saying it was released in April, in the Commonwealth it isn't released until June 1st by the looks.
So I won't be able to join in on that read if it wins.

message 1160: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Looks like Traitor's Niche will lose. Too many votes down.
A pity. I really wanted to join in on another group read and I hope enough people can access Feast of Sorrows to have people wanting to post in the group read thread.

message 1161: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments I'm going to read it anyhow since I read Feast so recently.

message 1162: by Lia (new)

Lia (lia_mb) | 638 comments Wow! Both of them are listed with premium prices on Amazon.

message 1163: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited May 03, 2017 06:29PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Yeah they aren't cheap. I may have bought Feast of Sorrows, as that is the one ny library didn't have, but the cheapest I can find it is $40 Australian. ($30 USD). I don't even pay that much for books by my favourite authors.

Wow! I hope you find it worthwhile if you decide to buy!

message 1165: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I can't do it. It is too much money for any book.
I'll have to put a purchase request into the library. Doubt it will make in time for group read though.

message 1166: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I am putting a purchase request into the library today for Feast of Sorrows. Cross fingers it arrives in June so I can join in on group read. :)

message 1167: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments I love books set in the Ottoman Empire
I am wondering if my so-helpful librarian will consider this book worth of her attention...

message 1168: by Renata (new)

Renata (rderis) | 236 comments It looks like Amazon.com (US) has Feast of Sorrows for 12.99 for Kindle. Also, a used bookstore I dealt with extensively here while working in the book trade here in DC, Second Story Books, in MD is showing some used copies in like new conditionFor 13 odd US dollars. They are very reputable.

message 1169: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments If the book I'd like to have is too expensive I sometimes wait a bit and then I search on Thriftbooks

message 1170: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I always find that when the small paperback is released then some books become more affordable.
Feast of Sorrows is only in Hardback currently I think.

I have put in a request to purchase with my library. They always purchase fiction that is requested if it is under two years since it was released. I am hopeful. But I am not so hopeful it will make it to me in June. You never know though.

message 1171: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments And the winner for June is..

Feast of Sorrow A Novel of Ancient Rome by Crystal King

message 1172: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments We do have a winner in the July book read poll. I'm co-ordinating with Terri on setting it up.

She's chasing cows; and I'm trying to run the office all by myself. We're getting there. Trust us.

message 1173: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Darn those cows.....and internet problems. :-/
Okay. Poll going up tomorrow. My Telco is still being a pain in the butt with our internet service. But things are working again for the time being,

message 1174: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Poll up and running. Look for the link in the message in your Inbox, or go to the Polls page in the right hand column on any page from the group.

message 1175: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I plumped for Rosebood. I think I remember enough of it to join in the conversation. :)

message 1176: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I went for The Pyramid. I'm interested in trying the author and Egypt hist fic that is not fantasy or romance/chick lit is as rare as hen's teeth.

message 1177: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments Terri wrote: "I went for The Pyramid. I'm interested in trying the author and Egypt hist fic that is not fantasy or romance/chick lit is as rare as hen's teeth."

I couldn't find this one but it looks so good I've added it to my TBR to read one day.

message 1178: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments The Pyramid I read years ago but don't remember much about it so will try this one again.

message 1179: by Renata (new)

Renata (rderis) | 236 comments A difficult choice. They both look interesting - whichever wins, I'll probably read both at some point. Roseblood has a slight edge, given that my summer reading so far has consisted of "all things War of the Roses".

message 1180: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Just moved Roseblood into the currently reading slot.

Poor Terri's got the bloody flu and is as sick as a dog. I'll try and liase with her on a group read for September today, as I think we're past the usual voting time.

message 1181: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments GIve her our best!

message 1182: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Will do, happy.

message 1183: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (last edited Aug 09, 2017 08:17PM) (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Terri will do the poll tomorrow.

We've decided on a Battle of the Moderators. I've chosen one of my favourite books, and she's going to chose one of hers. :D

message 1184: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments happy wrote: "GIve her our best!"

Terri says thank you.

Oooooooo lol.

Feel better soon, Terri!!

message 1186: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments Be well Terri, I have faith in out mighty warrior ( being the pen mightier than the sword....:-))

message 1187: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Battle of the Moderators is postponed until later.

Terri is still really ill. She's insisting on doing a poll later. We're going outside our eras for this one. A couple of Victorian books. I'm sure no-one will mind this once.

Sickness is no fun; hope you're up and about soon!

message 1190: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Aug 12, 2017 05:29PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Thanks, my dear. :-) Actually starting to feel half decent today.
I sound like a deflating set of old Scottish bag pipes when I breath, but I'm feeling much chirpier. I think I'm on the mend!

message 1191: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I tell you all what. That book The North Water is leading quite strongly in the poll, I certainly hope members read it if it becomes the group read. It sounds a little dark and disturbing. I am intetested to see what people think. Maybe it would have been better as the October group read...an eerie Halloween type read. :-)

message 1192: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments You said that earlier this week. Stay inside and stay warm.

message 1193: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments It does sound scary. I don't think I'll be reading it!

message 1194: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I'm disappointed Flashman isn't making a better showing. :D

message 1195: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Margaret wrote: "I'm disappointed Flashman isn't making a better showing. :D"

$$ to donuts many people have already read it.

message 1196: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Yeah, that Flashman has been around a long time. Read by many. I have not read it. I've never really had a great desire to. Maybe one day.

message 1197: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments The North Water will be our September group read.
A good choice I think. It rates so well and I feel the subject matter will be good for the discussing as members read it.

message 1198: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I'm excited to read it. I'll pick it up from the library next week.

message 1199: by Linda (new)

Linda Laher. | 32 comments Count me in on the September read

message 1200: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)
