Monthly Group Reads Polls and Voting
I must give advance warning on the poll book, Ransom...Jane recommended me this one and she can't remember exactly if there are actually Gods in it. I have read through heaps of reviews and can't find mention. So I have told Jane that if it does end up turning into fantasy mythology, people can blame her. :D

I'm planning to reread this one win or lose; the library has it.
A small update for next months polls. Due to Terri's technical difficulties she's running a little late for the May polls but we should have them up in the next couple days.
Sorry folks for the late polls. Working on them now that I have my laptop back working. I could have gone through and worked out which books to do in the poll on my Tablet while my laptop wasn't working...but that would have mind bending. Tablet is awkward and slow to use for that kind of job.
Polls are up!! They were only 5 days late..that's not TOO bad...

Question: Is it possible to nominate my ancient historical fiction book for an upcoming month poll? I can't find anything about how books for the polls are selected.....
I select the books, Caitlin. It is sort of our version of a Group Challenge. I go through many, many books every month, selecting books that might suit our active members tastes and discussions, and that may also tempt our non active members to join in.I don't consider Indie or Self Pub because the book needs to be accessible to as many people as possible.
There needs to be a possibility that the books can be found in more than one country, in more than one language, and that there is a possibility it can be found in libraries, new book stores, used book stores as well as in ebook.
SP and Indie books are only available as new paper or ebook for purchase. Many of our members can't afford to buy our group read books, or they won't buy unless it is a favourite author or reviews well. That is why it is important that the book might be found in libraries (or used bookstores for cheap).
I think we can assume that
Iron and Rust by Harry Sidebottom is going to win the Ancient poll &
Stormbird by Conn Iggulden is going to win the Medieval polleven though we have a couple days left.
So put in your library holds or online orders or drop by the local book store so you can be prepared for May 1!
worked well for me too, I have Iron and Rust waiting on Kindle, and a paperback of Stormbird that I was given a few months ago. Looking forward to these reads.
Very nice, I guess I should decide whether to buy Iron and Rust or read Caligula. I also still need to decide whether to buy The Last Jew.
I borrowed Stormbird from the library, but as for Iron and Rust I'm thinking about ordering a paperback from the UK. The US Amazon has only a hardback version and it would take forever to reach me. How stupid it is that I can't order kindle ebooks from the UK (I get angry whenever I think of that, LOL) !
June Group Read Polls are open!!Two days early. Hope I didn't catch you with your pants down and unprepared. :}

My votes are purely based on the fact that I own a copy of one book from each poll. Having said that I really want to read Gutenberg's Apprentice
So, time permitting (and hopefully the blanket I'm cross stitching for my friend's soon to arrive babe is completed), I might get a couple of these read.
I have the two medieval ones waiting to be read so I might just read those in June. So many books.....
Just a small suggestion - it appears that there are a number of books out there with similar titles. This month's Dawn of Empire is one of them. Could the poll include the author's name with the book's title?
Hi Eileen,Happy for small suggestions.
However, in this case, I have an instant resolution.
This is why when I do the group poll broadcast to members, I tell them how to find out who wrote the book so they can further investigate before voting for good.
If you vote, you then go to the next page where you can click on the titles in the poll results, or the bookcovers just below them.
Investigate the books in more detail, then come back and change your vote.
You can change your vote as much as you want.
In other words, when you cast a vote, it isn't permanent. So you can click on either book randomly, and then after you have looked further into them, you can change the vote to the book you want it on.
Hope that helps.

I did that last night. Library has Aztec
but not the other one.
We have our winners for the 2nd Anniversary Monthly Read selections.Ancient era:
Dawn Of Empire by Sam BaroneMedieval era:
Gutenberg's Apprentice by Alix Christie
The July Polls are up.https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/5...
Yes, I know that War appears in the titles of both Ancient reads, but it happened you know. War and stuff was quite a popular pastime in Ancient times.
Terri wrote: "Was that the second Anniversary of our group reads? Two years of reading with others. Cool. :D"It was/is indeed :)
Alas, my interest is peeked, but they do not have it at my libraries. I may need to use this month as an excuse to catch up on some previous winners :P
The Master of Verona looks like the kind of book such a distinguished pipe smoking gent as yourself should be reading in a smokey library somewhere, Daniel. A pity you can't access it. :)
The August polls are up. Many thanks to Happy, Jane and Lia for their suggestions. https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/5...
We have our winners, The Water Thief and A Plague on Both Your Houses are the group reads for August.
I might be reading both this month. #1 is a reread and #2 the library has. I don't care if I already know the villain in #1.....
The poll is up for the September group read. There will just be one selection going forward, this month we are trying one ancient and one medieval or later book in the poll. https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...
The poll is up for the October group read. This poll includes both medieval era books. Next month will be Ancient era. https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/5...
I voted for the Hollick. A favourite era of mine and even though the author is known for writing romance lite I am willing to try it if I can get it from the library. (And if I feel like reading next month...which could be in the mix).
I personally think this one is better than Penman but it is more toward that style of story rather than Cornwell. I'm not positive what you'll think of it, I've always been on the fence about what your impression of it would be.
I read an excerpt once and it was enough to give me an adverse reaction. But I may be willing to have another look.

The last four days I have been super busy and haven't been able to get online for more than a second.
