Jane | 3480 comments I finally decided to buy it since the only library copy is on their bookmobile and is checked out.

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments Oh my, the poll is tied for Stonehenge and God of War. I've never experienced this much anticipation when watching a goodreads bookclub poll. It is quite exciting!

We do have some close ones in this group. Lol.

message 654: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Oh, Stonehenge has edged out to the front again. :)

Yes we have. I've had to change a vote once so that one could win. It's incredible how some are so close and others so far apart.

message 656: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (dward526) | 290 comments Had to change my vote....cant get a hold of God Of War in time...sorry :P

message 657: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Stonehenge has broken away...

haha. Yes, but maybe say yes to prehistoric man?
(I voted for God of War, but we have never had an Ancient group read as Ancient as Stonehenge. So, if it wins, forget that it is another BC and embrace the non fantasy prehistoric setting for its rarity in the HF genre. ;)

message 659: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I have had to change my vote once so we didn't have a tie too.

Then there was the one where I bribed people with pumpkins to change their vote so we didn't have a tie. lol.
I think Lia was the member who conceded and took the pumpkin bait. :D

I'd forgotten about the pumpkin bait. If Stonehenge wins, will it be the first one where all the mods have already read the winner?

message 661: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments mmmm..I believe it will be yes.

message 662: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Nope, I don't like prehistoric stories so I haven't read it.

message 663: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Oh that's right. So answer is no. Not the first book that all the mods have read. ;D

Lia (lia_mb) | 638 comments Terri wrote: "... I think Lia was the member who conceded and took the pumpkin bait. :D ..."

Yes, it was me! And I am still looking for a way out from this pumpkin patch. :D

*sniffs* I am a sore loser. :P

message 668: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Nov 14, 2013 06:35PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Me too. I didn't vote for either.

I have added the books to the upcoming reads. I chose a different cover for Stonhenge (for the same reason as I chose the 'man' Lionheart cover over the most common Lionheart cover), because the more common covers for each book have been around so long they feel old hat to me.

This is the Stonehenge cover I chose to put on the group's main page as an upcoming read.

Stonehenge 2000 B.C.--A Novel by Bernard Cornwell

Great choice!

I do want to read Stonehenge eventually but I try and not read the same author without at least a few books in between and I just got The Last Kingdom so that one gets priority. Plus, it is Alexander, I am like a moth to a flame.

Terri | 19576 comments TLK is worth your immediate attention...or at least the set up to one of the greatest HF series' ever, is worth your immediate attention. :)

message 671: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I started Pure last night. Had a reading spot, Pure has filled it. :)

Off I go to the losers thread to post thoughts...

message 672: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) You evil early starter!!

message 673: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Pure is the only one of this month's choices I'm interested in reading. I've read both of the winners and do not want to reread either.

My feeling is: maybe start early, but hold off comments until the official start.
[Which is what i should have done a few months back -- psst don't tell anyone! ] :)

Nah, it isn't starting early when it is a loser book. I don't feel at all guilty. :)

message 680: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I picked up a copy of Pure so I'm ready to start. I'm not sure why but I was expecting a book that was a bit bigger, with smaller font, it's looks like it's a pretty easy read though. Shouldn't take long to read when I do start.

message 681: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments I wondered whether Pure had big font, because I read the sample and they didn't seem to give you much...

message 684: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I have some interesting ones to start the new year. :)
I don't know if I am being too daring with the medieval 'or later' poll. We'll soon see!

I'll release the polls today (while you are all sleeping) or tomorrow.

message 685: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Had some spare time and got the polls done.

POLLS ARE OPEN!

message 686: by Alicja (new)

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments Already voted! The ancient poll was easy to pick, I've been wanting to read The Afghan Campaign for ever and they have it in my library.

The 47 Ronin Story sounds awesome but is not at my library. Will have to see if I can track that one down.

Thanks for the great choices!

But one of these days you will have to include a Mary Renault choice. She is just such a classic author of ancient Greek fiction.

message 687: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Maybe one day. We'll see. They are love stories and I would have to be desperate for an option before I added a love story into the polls. :)
If a love story shows up, it will be by accident. Because I don't know its a love story.

If you do The Last of the Wine, the love story is a minimal subplot, very understated. Or The Mask of Apollo, it is more like a platonic love (or awe) for Dion while we barely even register that he's got a boyfriend/partner at home (Niko never gets together with Dion, only gets him involved more into the political intrigue). In Fire from Heaven, Hephaestion takes up about 5-10% of the book and only a few vague passages refer to love or romance and more as a friend and devoted guard and fellow soldier. Just avoid The Persian Boy but that is second in the series anyway. Even in that one the romance is a secondary plot, and that's the most romantic one of the ancient Greek works. But do get a second opinion. :)

It has just began. Remember last month's poll? There was a crazy handful difference between the votes at the end, at least in the ancient category.

What is your favorite Renault novel?

message 692: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments The 47 Ronin Story has pulled out in front. I voted for The Gods of Gotham :(

My favorite Mary Renaults are the two about Theseus: [book:The King Must Die
and The Bull from the Sea.

I read The King Must Die in high school but I don't remember it anymore. I just dug it out of my parents garage about a year ago so its waiting to be re-read. My favorite out of the ones I've read recently is The Last of the Wine.

message 695: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments I voted for Gods of Gotham because I scored an ex-review copy at my old workplace.
Why they paid the journos to review books while I was typing up horse race results, I don't know.

message 696: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I was hoping The Gods of Gotham would win but it looks like it's falling pretty far behind.

message 697: by Portia (new)

Portia I was hoping the same thing, Dawn.

that's funny.
I can see you hiding in a dusty corner tapping away on an Olivetti typewriter surrounded by a decade of old form guides. :)

message 699: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments If anyone is interested. The book in the Medieval or Later poll, 47 Ronin is being released as a major motion picture this Christmas.
Here is the trailer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8cKdD...

One of the reasons I put the book in the January Poll is because the movie is due out in December. Figured we may have some members who will watch the movie this month and then want to read the book next month. :)

I have noticed there seems to be a fantasy feel to the movie, but I have never seen anybody who has read the book say it contains fantasy. Wondering if the movie is taking liberties.

Looks like the book will win the poll so we will soon find out if it is fantasy.
