I haven't seen the movie but I would definitely recommend this book. The first few chapters are a bit boring but if you can get past those then the book picks up and is really, really good!
I would recommend this book to those who wants to read AND think a lot. I wouldn't recommend this to those who wants to relax their mind and stuff. Y'know what I mean. But it is true that though the first few chapters are REALLY boring, this book is worth reading :)
If you read a lot of crime fiction, don't bother with it. The bad guy is obvious and the 'detection' and thriller elements are laughable. If you don't read crime fiction then you might have a good time with it. Everyone says the second and third books are better, but I couldn't be bothered with them having waded through the mess that this one was. Sorry.

I watched the movie and read the book. Both moved a little slowly for me, but I got through them both. I will read the other books just to find out what happens next, because I don't like to leave things unfinished, but I'm hoping they don't move as slow as this one did.
I might be the only person in the world who really didn't find this story that interesting. Not sure why. I didn't bother to see the movie, since I didn't like the book that much.
I didn't think this was a good book at all. I thought the movie was quite good though.
All three of the books in the trilogy are great books. He died in the middle of writing the 4th book. Read the book then see the movie which is very entertaining.
It took me a while to get used to the author's style and there was so much going on at the start, I thought I'd never catch up. Thank goodness for the endless cups of coffee drank by B. It is a very dark book and S is social outcast, genius, possibly has aspergers or is just so numb to human relatiionships because of the abuse she has suffered in the past. I'm glad that really nasty man was killed in the end. Not a book to read if you're deeply affected by horror. You won't sleep!

I read the book and I have seen both the Swedish version and the new American version of the movie. All were excellent. The Swedish movie did have much more graphic sex, but both movies aptly captured the book's intentions. (I think) I could not put down the book and I was very eager to continue through the next two. The second book I could not believe was just as great as the first. But the third book got a little tedious toward the end but the plot was still very exciting.
The movies are acceptable but the book is horrible. I just finished the first one but is so poorly written I won't bother with the other two. Supposedly, the Lisbeth character is a model of empowerment but I only see a fragile fearful girl who is constantly victimized and can't escape her situation. Sex and violence are described in a rather voyeuristic way which, once again, objectifies and victimizes. In other words, the book does exactly what it pretends to denounce. Deficient style and dishonest content.
Maybe I shouldn't bother picking up book 3 again! The trilogy was so popular that quite a few stylists have come on to the market, such as Jo Nesbitt - ' Snowman' etc. What are his books like? Are they a patch on the MS?
I don't know about the stylists that have come onto the market. I will investigate because if they are like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I will probably read them.
Lisbeth is a character of empowerment but the author leads us through her growth into the strong person she becomes in the third novel. She is a victim in the beginning, but by the end of the third novel she has, like a phoenix, risen to power. If you are not into mystery procedurals, you probably won't like the trilogy. But if you like to follow the step by step development of a multi-level mystery, these are your books. Lisbeth is a textbook case of a victim of child abuse who overcomes and pushes to lead a powerful and productive life.

Loved this trilogy and when I think he was working on a 4th book just before he died. Great read!
I found myself constantly thinking..."must be a fantastic movie"..because the book isn't special. Made myself finish it. I was satisfied at the end though but haven't had the urge to tackle the other two. I think it is better than I thought it was as I was reading.
I didn't like this book. I read the first two. I thought it was a fun mystery story, but it became a little preachy.

I don't agree with that. Each book is different but they fit together as a finished puzzle.

The writing isn't the best, and if you're a mystery story aficionado you probably won't be thoroughly impressed. That being said, it's a good light read, I liked the characters, and the ending was solid enough. I'd recommend it as a book to unwind to.

I LOVED the book, was VERY disappointed with the movie. They had to take out a LOT from the movie to get it condensed to the allotted time. My suggestion is to see the movie first, then read the book as the book is always 10x better than the movie.
Excellent! I've read all three and they are sooo very good! well written.
A slow developer but worth the effort? But why? Because the sense of place in Sweden really works. The details are exotic enough but familiar too. Nordic sensibilities. The disaffected Lisbeth character seemed a unsympathetic caricature in book 1. After meeting other family members in book 2, Lisbeth is a lot more sympathetic. But I think it is the setting, the blend of familiar and unfamiliar that makes this book stand out.
It's a good book if you like reading page after page of boring background. I prefer more excitement in the writing. It was very well written, but so long I had a hard time remembering who all the characters were!The movie made much more sense - didn't read the other books in the series!
It's an awesome book, though I've never seen the movie. Lisbeth Salander is one of the best characters I've read about since Durzo Blint.
Sorry to disagree but the movie seemed to attract violence lovers and shallow peeps. The book added lots of layers and, I for one, prefer the background and the details. As it was it was too graphic for me to make in an all time favorite. Actually I was a little embarassed that I enjoyed it - pretty brutal from the "you are what your read" perspective.
I don't think you are what you read. It's a very interesting and well written story. the Swedish film was a little too dry. I prefered the American version much more like the book, that doesn't mean that it could have taken the place of the book. I agree that the information and characte analysis is necessary.
The entire Trilogy is excellent. I could not wait to find out what happened and was not disappointed.Now if your basing it off of the American movie, it doesn't follow the book as much as the Swedish movie does.
Liked the Swedish movie version because it follows the books and sets you up for the sequels, but the American movie is more cinematic and the actors are better.

Maybe I should go back and read the book again. I remember being distracted while reading during that time and it could be that's why I didn't really appreciate the book. I'm usually the first to discount the movie in preference of the book!

Well I have to say that with this series....you have to read it slow and take in all of the imagery and details. sometimes it is hard to concentrate and remember who is who because there are a lot of players in the book!I found it fascinating and could not believe how this family behaved and then the story line with Lisbeth takes you on a whole new roller coaster!!
Give it another chance, I do admit that this trilogy is not for everyone, but I was hooked!
my view was pretty much boring boring boring anal rape...boring boring borin child rape....boring boring boring nazi murders engaging in yet again more rape....not really my idea of a good time

"Is this a good book" - Not really - writing in book 1 ok but very disturbing - It deserves the original Sweedish title "Men who Hate Women" Other 2 books include some (IMO) unnecessary violence to keep them up with book one - the story is not carried through only some of the characters
"Is it anything like the movie" - wouldn't know - no monster truck could drag me to watch any movie made from this book.
"Is it worth reading" no - Many other crime novels exist and are worth reading and give greater suspense without the need for the nasty tone of this book. My take of this is a man who wanted to vent his absolute disgust at some of the horrific things that are done to women and the way society can condone them - I just think it came out too pornographic so the message is somewhat lost.
I also much prefer the Swedish version to the American one. The "feel" of the book is nicely reproduced in the Swedish while the American version felt like a horror story.
I loved the trilogy. They were translated so the English was a bit stilted at times, but the plots and characters are great!
The character of Lisbeth is really what gives the trilogy its interest. She's an original. The writing and the plotting is not terribly well-done. The point-of-view character, Michael Blomqvist, is pretty wishy-washy. There are all sorts of loose ends left hanging in the plotting.
I disagree. The writing is good. It's a journalistic style of writing and that's different concerning crime novels. The plotting is like a puzzle. You're not sure what's going to happen next.
I agree with Diedre. I am not a fan of crime books or viiolent books but this one was written in a way that really pulled me in. It was really interesting to me to learn that the author had lived the life of Michael Blomqvist almost exactly.
I love this book- - the whole trilogy. And I've seen the film.
I have finished the whole series and frankly, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is my least favorite. It is worth plowing through the background to enjoy the rest of the series.
