I wish we could do that but we have dogs. And we can't take all three with us at the same time. Plus the two little ones don't like people that much.

I got a question: does leylines count as method of transportation that is not a vehicle? I meant to ask this earlier but forgot.
Angie ~aka Reading Machine~ wrote: "I got a question: does leylines count as method of transportation that is not a vehicle? I meant to ask this earlier but forgot."I think I might need more info about how your author is using them. I wasn't sure what they were and the definitions I found make them seem more like pathways. The item is actually a vehicle that is not a car. A path way would not work in that sense. However, wikipedia mentioned some scifi books that used the lines as means of teleportation so if the book has a local or monument that acts as the vehicle to use the leylines to transport, I would accept that.
It really depends on how your autor is using them.
No Dawn, you answered my question just fine. In the Hollows Series, you can travel the leylines one to the next. The book I'm currently reading doesn't use leylines in this manner but as a means for spaceship cordinates.
Dawn I finished my graveyard/week 3 book today. Now can I read my light book this week or do I need to wait until next week?
Yup, Jenne you want to get it read as soon as you can so you are ready to start next week's when it is called. After next week I feel we are going to be down to the wire.
I have a great idea for the next round....Once each team is created each team selects one of their members to be the alternate. That person reads and posts books along with everyone else but their points don't count.
Now if one of the point members on the team ends up disappearing or has an emergency where they can't read their book or needs to be removed that alternate can step in?
It is still a team effort but in the situation where one member has an emergency hospitalization or something like that where they can't contribute, the team is still in the game.

It is a possibility. We would need to establish at what point the alternate is to step in. Would it be on a per week basis, players are picked each week before the item is called? Or would it be after so long of not posting the person is replaced?
I plan to post a thread to get feed back at the end to help me plan the next round. But by all means if anyone else has suggestions let me know so I can include those ideas with the feed back.

Katya,
I wouldn't like to post books and read if it won't count.
But I like your idea about alternates stepping in when a teammates gets 3 or more weeks behind.
There needs to be strong statement that this is a team competition--a time sensitive one. If you want to be "stubborn" (selfish is more like it), then you need to go do personal competitions.
Ezinwanyi wrote: "Katya wrote: "I have a great idea for the next round....Once each team is created each team selects one of their members to be the alternate. That person reads and posts books along with everyon..."
I wouldn't mind being the alternate as long as next time I could be a regular player.
We could always add a thing where the alternate get's one item per week if not being used as a fill-in to encourage the other team members to read up?
Anyway it is just a thought and maybe worth considering.
So this person will work as a wildcard, right? If no one goes missing during the challenge, we could add the wildcard points to the group. It's bad on one side, because if there's someone to quit, all the other wildcards won't have their ponts add, but if no one quits the game, the wildcard's points can make or break her/his team.
Or alternatively, you can close the sign in sheet a little later and leave only "back-up" places open, where the participants understand that they may be called on if needed, and where they are encouraged to keep track of what the weekly items are, so they can easily slot in at a moments notice (but may ultimaely not need to be called on)Maybe something added to the rules also about "due to the time-sensitive nature of this comp" players need to make sure they don't fall more than two weeks behind, or their teams will be given the option to replace them with a back-up. Or is that too harsh?
Dawn, I can see how big a job this is. Thanks so much for all you do to make it work for us!

I think if it is written in the rules ahead of time it is not to harsh as everyone would agree to it before the challenge began. If most people would want that written in, I will add it. I will put it up for vote in the review thread when I post it.
I have to agree with CaroB...Dawn you have taken on a big job. I hope you know how much I appreciate your efforts. You stay right on everything, are very diplomatic and help to make this a fun game. I appreciate you!
Another thought.....no wild card or alternate....if a person falls behind two weeks the rest of the team has the option to read another book for that person....or maybe everyone on the team reads a book for that person??? lots of ideas.
End of week 4 points. Items of 96 possible

Congratulations to Katya for being the first player to finish all 20 items and the only player to not have to double up on any item.

PURE LUCK not having to double up on any item.
Random thought on the next round. My mind is already off and going trying to come up with items. What would you all think about instead of choosing 4 random items (from 1 list) from your books you have to choose 1 person, 1 place, 1 thing and 1 color (4 seperate lists) each week? It would make items harder to find and make the game last longer. Maybe?
CaroB wrote: "I love where you're going with it. Place would be really hard, I think." Places would have to be more generalized. Big city, Small town, Coastal Region, Rural, then there are the really common ones like house, school, bar, hospital, restaurant.
I suppose on the cover they would be harder to find but not so hard in a book.

Ohhh! That makes more sense :-) I was thinking you meant more of a geographical location.
Love it Dawn....make it more complex. So we really have to dig around. Thanks Ezinwanyi and Angie & Cindy!!!
How about it be old school and we pick our own team members? lol it might tighten up the teams.....just a thought. So give people the option like in buddy reads to pick a team of five....then those folks who are single can create a team?????

CaroB wrote: Would that not leave the newcomers at a disadvantage? ..."I agree. It would be really good for a couple teams of returning players but the newbies wouldn't have much of a chance.
It also opens up that whole venue of being the last kid picked to play (yeah, I was that kid alot of times).
I think random is a better way to do it.
CaroB wrote: "Katya wrote: "How about it be old school and we pick our own team members? lol it might tighten up the teams.....just a thought. People are picking their partners or trios to read a book. But the one's who are single do not know folks so they post and are pared up if no one approaches them....we are not in grammar school. No one should worry about being the last kid picked. I have to tell you...I would rather do single challenges because....one person, who is not as committed, can take you out of this challenge and that takes the fun out of it. The team aspect ramps up the fun if everyone can be counted on. The commrodery (spell?) helps spur the competition.
I know a lot of us are on edge waiting for the (possibly) last item to be called. I am just going to put a heads up out there. I am also playing SOS Bookshelf bingo. My team is 1 shelf away from having bingo. If that shelf happens to be the one called this afternoon I am immersing my self in my book and not comming up until it is read. So this is your warning that if "Male Lead" gets called I probably won't post the item at midnight but rather my actual Sunday morning. We really need to address a better time to announce a new item for next round.
Dawn (Kat N Hat) wrote: "We really need to address a better time to announce a new item for next round. ..."I've liked that you announced the scavenger hunt item at practically the same time as Steph announces the new bingo shelf. I've managed to read the same book for both every time. It's been helpful with all the extra hours I've been putting in at work.

Maybe it is just me that is inpatient. The SOS book usually gets called Saturday afternoon for me so I have all evening to wait before this one is called.
SOS didn't call my shelf yesterday, but I guess I passed out about 11:30 last night. That was the last time I looked at the clock.
It would make me less stressed if the two were closer so I knew if I could use the same book for both it is the 8 hours between the two that make me crazy where I could be reading, but I wait to see if it will work for both books. Or I jump ahead and start reading then I am in a rush to read two books ASAP.
Maybe it is just me.
You're in charge. Next time, just announce the new item when you see the new shelf for Bingo (if it's playing). As long as you give us a general time frame for the announcement, we'll be looking for it. I don't think any of us expect you to keep yourself up late or set a bunch of alarms to get up early just to announce an item for us. I don't anyways. :-)
Ok, executive decision. There are two teams with players who may have become unable to complete the challenge. I have sent them one last message to make sure. If I do not hear from them by 8 am tomorrow I am going to tap in subs. The subs will be allowed to claim books they have read since the item was called and will only need to read the items left by the players unable to finish.

I will check in here and the help thread but I am going to avoid the team threads so I don't accidentally skip a review when I get back to having access to the spread sheet. So if you have a question post it here, for the next few days and I will get to it when I get time.
