I did a lot of research into the history of hypnosis/somnambulism for my biographical novel about Bertha Pappenheim, the ‘founding patient’ of psychoanalysis. A good one was A History of Hypnotism by Alan Gauld. There’s also Letters on Mesmerism by Harriet Martineau who wrote of her own experiences. You can download this one free from the internet.

Virginia Tell (vtell) | 4 comments Hello Everyone!

I'm Virginia Tell. My only daughter is grown, I'm divorced, and I think I might be the happiest person I know. Life is just…well…great, and I'm happy to say hello to a lot of other like-minded individuals!

Other than being a reading enthusiast, I'm also a writer (but I'm not published yet, so you won't see me promoting my work!) living in Baton Rouge, LA.

I love literary fiction, and that's mostly what I write, but I do read narrative non-fiction also (and write it), and I love hearing what other readers have to say about what they read - that's the best part of being in a group! If any of you want to know a little more about me, you can take a look at www.VirginiaTell.com.

Looking forward to saying hello in the discussions!

Karol M | 4 comments Hi, I'm Karol. I am interested in psychology topics because I am very curious about the life of the mind/body, how we establish social norms, mental illness(runs in my family, unfortunately), and how we all survive and sometimes thrive in this crazy world we live in. I'm a journalist by trade, but have had to retire that profession because of lack of jobs. I love to explore neighborhoods, cities, towns, countries, ride my bike, pet my cats, hang with friends and read books!

Kimberly (kfegs) | 3 comments Hi everyone! My name is Kim and I am a school psychologist in Maryland, but I am originally from upstate NY...It was just too cold there, haha. I currently service both a pre k-5 elementary school and an alternative middle/high school. I am very excited to have found this group, as I love reading as much as I love psychology.

Here's to some great reads!

Patrick Bruning I'm Patrick, I'm 24 and live in Salt Lake Utah. I'm currently getting back into school to get my Bachelors in behavioral health and psychology. I love learning as much as I can about psychology. I especially enjoy learning about behavioral health and mental illness's since I have a few diagnosed mental illnesses myself. The more I understand about psychology, the more hopeful I am about not letting my illness's control my life. Sorry for the novel. I'm excited to start getting involved in this group.

Hi Courtney,

I mainly do psychological evaluations to assist in determining eligibility for special education. I also do counseling, behavior consultation, threat assessments, and anything else I can get my hands into!

I noticed from your "Meet the Moderators" post that you are in school (or at least were in school when you posted that). What are/were you studying?

NY is cool to visit, but I think I am done with living there, haha.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm excited to get reading!

Melanie (mel-k) | 22 comments Hello Scott; In your profiling of this particular type of pathology have you ever seen an exception to the misogyny stemming from something other than a failure during the attachment phase with the primary care giver? This relationship seems to be a variable in nearly every case.

Jennifer | 7 comments Melanie wrote: "Hi Jennifer - did your forensic psychology studies focus more on criminal pathology or on the criminal justice system and legality?"

It really was a mix - courses on assessment, working in the criminal justice system and legal issues. I really enjoyed it!

Good point, Melanie. There is a strong positive correlation but that does not mean causality. Sexual psychopathic killers can be triggered by numerous things but normally sex and violence become intertwined during adolescence.

Great article. Would love to read your book as I am one if those people that as a child read everything I could about serial killers. I also more recently created a painting of John Wayne Gacy complete with a rather ominous clown face. Should I be worried? :)
