Hi Wendi-

I wish you well with you starting your Masters program. I start mine this Sept! I am a little nervous but a good friend told me it is a different experience because you are focusing on the subject of your choice and no longer worrying about all the undergrad courses...it is pure passion. So I am hoping she is right.

What grade level are you teaching?

message 7: by marcus (new)

marcus collins (marcuscollins) | 1 comments Hi, i'm marcus. Thanks for the invitation!

i studied Computer Science, Psychology, and Linguistics, and at the moment i'm studying at the Bible Institute of South Africa. i'm looking at studying further in philosophy and theology, but i maintain an interest (if at times vicariously) in psychology, especially cognitive psychology and theory of mind. i greatly enjoy reading, and when i can get away from academic reading i especially enjoy the great Russian psychologists such as Dostoevsky ;)

message 8: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (shelcatzoe) Welcome Wendi and Marcus!! I'm so glad to see the group is growing!

I actually am doing my degree program through Walden University. It is connected through the military, Since we are going overseas soon. They will help me come back over to the states when I need too for school. I earned my Bachelors through them as well and have nothing but good things to say about them. I was so nervous finishing up my bachelors in an online format... but when I was done. I was like I wish this was big 10 years ago. I love it because they walked me through all the proper accredit I was to look for when choosing an online/campus school.

Where did you study? or Would like to study for your Masters?

Hi Valarie- do you teach a certain subject? I think middle school is one of the hardest areas of teaching. I always had a professor tell me once that everyone once to teach the little ones or the ones about to be adults but not the ones who needs us the most. He was very passionate and encouraging future teachers to consider middle school.

message 13: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Zink The middle schoolers are definitely a breed of their own, but I just love them. I am never bored. I am very fortunate in that I work with gifted kids and high achievers doing an online acclerated math program, but I spent the first 10 years of my career doing Language Arts and love that as well. I know what you mean about that time in life. I had a hard time in middle school due to many different things but I think that may be why I am drawn to that age group.

message 32: by Kumiko (new)

Kumiko | 1 comments Hello, I'm a junior in a BS Psychology program with an interest in substance abuse intervention and counseling. I am currently taking a break from school. My favorite book is Failing Forward by Maxwell; everyone fails but how we react to failure can lead us to success or another set back.

Nice to meet everyone and look forward to reading some great books.

message 33: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (shelcatzoe) Welcome Kumiko :)

message 34: by Stuart (new)

Stuart Ayris (stuayris) Hi! I'm from Tollesbury, Essex, England. I have been a mental health nurse for the last 15 years feel very lucky to have stumbled upon this group. As well as being an avid reader, I have also written three novels - looking forward to some good and fun discussions, particularly on my favourite subject: the nature of madness.

Cheers!

message 35: by Richard (new)

Richard Sutton (richardsutton) | 10 comments Hey All! I'm Richard, also from NY. My college career, which was to be a psych major with the goal of clinical work was cut short by the VietNam war. My need to "man the barricades" was stronger than my academic focus. I've used my psych class and lab experience in my writing since the late 1970s when I jumped into advertising design and copy writing. Vance Packard must have bored a hole into my head. I look forward to discussions of motivation, monkeys on backs, etc.

message 36: by Summer (new)

Summer (paradisecity) Hi, everyone! I'm Esse and I'm currently finishing my dissertation and working at a university counseling center on the American east coast. I've worked as a clinician in a variety of different settings and I really enjoy what I do. I'm glad I found this group, as I do like to discuss psychology-oriented topics both with people who have a similar background and people who are coming at the topic from a completely different angle. I'm looking forward to participating in discussions in the future!

message 40: by Holly (new)

Holly | 2 comments Hello everyone; my name is Holly. I don't have any formal education in Psychology; as far as I've gotten is a class in high school. However, I have always found Psychology a fasinating subject. I love reading books about it, whether they be fiction or non-fiction. Seeing that all of you have a degree or are getting one in Psychology, I hope that I'm still welcome even though I don't have one. I would love to take classes, though.

message 41: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (shelcatzoe) Kiran, Welcome!

Holly: Of course you're welcome here! It's nice to have a perspective from someone who isn't pursuing Psychology as a career. I look forward to hearing your opinions :)

message 42: by Chandler (new)

Chandler (itsjustchandler) Hello! My name is Chandler, just turned 18, although i'm still in high school, it feels I've done enough reading to be about a 2nd year psychology major... I'm a concurrent enrollment student so I do take classes at a local university along with my high school classes, I'm in sociology right now but next semester i'll be in psych and probably an english comp class.
I got pretty committed to psychology around 2 years ago. It will probably be my major but who knows, word is that people change majors often.
as for the books, there's not one you could read without psychology in it. I'm read quite a few from 50 Psychology Classics by Tom Butler-Bowdon but I've wandered to others as well. The Gift of Fear was absolutely life changing, The Female/Male Brain by Louann Brizendine is probably going to save me so much time ;), Emotional Intelligence is a must read, especially someone working with children. Blink by Malcolm Gladwell was probably my very first "psychology book" and i've been hooked to him ever since, outliers is great btw. I just downloaded the Batman and Psychology book on my nook, very excited. A couple months ago I found a quick documentary about it. I'll leave the link. So glad I found the group!

Joshua Dror | 1 comments Hello all, my names is Joshua and I am 25 years old living in NYC a.k.a the Big Apple... I have always loved psychology and something about the brain always interested me. After pursuing a career in wholesale luggage and backpacks, I just decided to change careers, Finish up school and pursue a career dealing with mental illnesses. After reading all the previous posts it looks like a lot of you guys have some experience in the field. And the recommended books look great, looks like I got a lot of reading to catch up on.

message 45: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Jones (Tundrafuzz) | 1 comments Hello every one.
I have no official background in psychology. I do have an interest and as a bit of an autodidact I thought this might be a good place to get started. So I will try to keep to the background and observe. Thanks.

message 46: by Richard (new)

Richard Sutton (richardsutton) | 10 comments Hi Rebecca -- the learning's good, here.

message 47: by Peter (last edited Oct 15, 2012 03:18PM) (new)

Peter Fenton (peterfenton) Hello group members:

My interest in the group stems from my experience earlier this year as a caregiver in a private Oregon group home for you adult males with serious behavioral problems. Working there raised a lot of issues for me, in no small part because the facility was near the hometown of Ken Kesey, the author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (the infamous state mental hospital where the movie adaptation was filmed was razed in 2008). Hopefully, being part of a group comprised in large part of highly qualified professionals will help answer some of my questions. I have no formal training in psychology.

Richard Sutton (richardsutton) | 10 comments Hey Peter -- I worked for his brother Chuck, at the Springfield Creamery back in the early 70s. Fun, but odd times. Welcome!

Peter Fenton (peterfenton) Richard: Thanks for the note. Never met the family but eat the yogurt. Close as I'll get, I guess!

message 50: by Richard (new)

Richard Sutton (richardsutton) | 10 comments Ken's gone, Chuck sold the Yogurt to a long-term employee who is now making it in Eugene, I think... That works!
