Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Readers, if you're willing to beta read, authors, if you're looking for beta readers, this is the thread to connect with each other.

message 2: by Kath (new)

Kath | 1233 comments ooo good idea - just maybe add what genres you are interested in/offering could also help match authors/readers together

message 3: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (kiwi365) | 3672 comments I am more than keen to be a beta reader (am currently doing so for a couple of authors)

I am happy to do any genre especially Fantasy, Sci-fi, Dystopian, Crime, Thriller and comedy.

message 4: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I already have quite a number (although I hate the term beta reader. It's from computing, I think - beta users.) Happy to be called a proof reader though.
I'm not sure I have time to manage any more and still read books!
You know who you are!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I dunno...

To me 'proof reader' sounds more important than what I do. I just point out any typos or formatting issues I notice. Perhaps the odd awkward sentence or grammatical error.

Anyway, whatever we call it, I do like to be helpful.

Mind you, I do it for books I'm planning to read anyway, not because I've been approached so much. I really, truly never want to consider my reading to be a chore or pressured.

message 6: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments More than what we do (although I still do it sometimes) is copy editing. When you would suggest correct words for incorrect ones, suggest changing the order of words or sentences, suggest removing (editing) surplus stuff that hinders the flow.

If you are reading a proof copy (as it was called in the old paper days) you are proof reading.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good point.

You want me to change the thread title, don't you? ;)

message 8: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Nah! I'm cool with that. Just don't call me early!

message 9: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments If it's just a question of pointing out typos and formatting errors, maybe I can promise to pay more attention and offer my services as a Tetra-reader maybe?

message 10: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Gamma?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Zeppo?

message 12: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Aubergine?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Michael wrote: "Aubergine?"

Random

message 14: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Aubergine? I think Michael is annoyed because he tried to put it down on the Wordfeud board but he didn't have enough letters for it :P

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Ahem... I hope all you beta readers are making sure the group is linked on these authors blogs etc.....

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Simon (Highwayman) wrote: "Ahem... I hope all you beta readers are making sure the group is linked on these authors blogs etc....."

Very good point, Simon.

The benefits of being in the group should work in both directions. I'm sure all are in agreement on that. :)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments I would be happy to do this, i mainly read horror, thriller and crime but will give most things a go and like helping authors

message 18: by Pauline (new)

Pauline Byrne | 26 comments I would be happy to point out typos and formatting issues!!! My favourite books are fantasy but I read all sorts of things.

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Good idea! And, yes, genres would be good too list. Readers should have a knack for seeing errors!

(Did you spot the one above? ;) )

Pat () | -245 comments yes#;-)

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments First time? ;)

message 22: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments You're too, too silly, young Darren!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Pffft. Pretend it was a deliberate mistake when we all know you were just too lazy to correct it. ;)

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Ha! ;)

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments If I can help proof reading, please drop me PM. Just finished proofing one book, so have some spare capacity. Not really concerned with the genre.

Oh please someone give him a great tome of a technical book.

He'd be so pleased.

message 27: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Log tables. That'll larn 'im!
Aren't I being awful to poor old Geoff? And he's one of my oldest friends here. He knows I don't mean it.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yeah he is a big long toothed.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Bit, of course. Bit long toothed.

Or is he a sabre toothed duck?

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Here, I remember log tables. At least they never ran out of batteries at the vital moment.

message 31: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments They jolly well didn't! I have my great grandfather's seven place log tables.

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments log tables - as in log cabins?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I think they're talking about abacuses.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Maybe slide rules?

Hey, remember solar powered calculators? Weren't they cool?

message 35: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I've still got one!

message 36: by Geoff (new)

Geoff Woodland | 115 comments Are there any others ?? :-o)

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments Clay tablet and stencil here ;)

My early-YA fantasy novella revision should be done around mid to late June. Beta readers can PM me ;) (must have an eye for errors and be able to read it within a week).

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I have a slide rule at work. I bring it out occasional to shock the younger members of the team. Some of them don't even know what it is.....

D.M. Andrews (author) Andrews (dmandrews) | 1551 comments I have a slide rule, too: never go down one. Too old. Oh, and don't touch the sides (can get friction burn).

message 40: by Terry (new)

Terry Simpson | 108 comments I'd love a new beta reader. I write epic and urban fantasy. Next book is a sequel. Also have a novella that's almost done.

Happy to be a beta reader if you still need one.

Just PM me the synopsis.

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 4 comments I'm happy to proof read if anyone wants to contact me. Don't mind the genre.

message 45: by M.A. (new)

M.A. Comley (melcom) I need a proof reader who doesn't mind reading erotic romance. It's a short story about 7-8000 words.:-)

Let me know if there are any takers. It should be finished this week. x

message 46: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'm happy to proof read because I like to help but I will warn authors, I'm not good at grammar so would probably miss those errors. I will not be offended if no one wants to use me. It's understandable.

message 47: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I can fish out typos if that's what you're looking for Mel :)

message 48: by Mago (new)

Mago (Mark) | 1709 comments Happy to help, Mel.
It's about time I jumped on the 50 shades of gravy train.

message 49: by M.A. (new)

M.A. Comley (melcom) Thank you kindly, guys. Better get on and finish it. The trouble is the handyman is making a lot of noise today!!! Grrr...
