Mirkat Betty Newbie.

Actually, most of the dystopian novels I have read have used pretty common, everyday names. For example, see the Divergent series. Am I the only one who has noticed this? Not every dystopian is The Hunger Games.

Keelie or Riley or Haven

Melissa Danilov Is salt too weird? I would choose Salt

message 255: by Mirkat (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mirkat What's your UTOPIAN name? Utopia

Brix Dominic I like unique names. Mine would be: Rocky, Trey, Clay, and a lot more that I've forgotten.

message 257: by Peyton (new) - rated it 5 stars

Peyton McFarlain I would be Flair. It puts a twist on the name Blair while incorporating an object that wouldn't normally be used as a name.

message 258: by Addee (new) - rated it 3 stars

Addee Ash...... or Flash....... or River....... or Fenech........

I love Prince Ash, Flash Gorden, River Phoenix & Jeff Fenech, so I would name myself after one of them.

Beatrice I would just stick with the name I have now or maybe abbreviate it like Tris did in divergent. Either Bea or Tris.

I'm a Beatrice too! *cyber high-five*

message 262: by Grace (new)

Grace Ohhh Whisper is pretty but I kinda like Glimmer from Hunger Games or Avery and I kinda think Sky would be a cool name. Clarissa from the Mortal Instruments series is cool too:)

Estefania Montanez I love the name Joy! It sounds so playful. And it's a normal name, as well as a dystopian name!

message 264: by Robert (new)

Robert Remember the virtual world "Second Life"? The name I used there was "Stagewalker Shepherd" and is a sort of a mentor character. In a dystopian world, I would hope to take the same persona.

kirstin ✿ I'd like to be named Scar. I don't know why, but it appeals so much to me. I even use it as username on my online games. They thought I was a male ^^

message 266: by [deleted user] (new)

I would go by Luminae.
It's such a fascinating name, as well as the definition is beautiful :3

kirstin ✿ Hi, Luminae! :D

message 268: by [deleted user] (new)

Hullo Scar ;)

kirstin ✿ I really like Via, too. Or Avi. Or Skye. Raine. Lightning! OMG. Yes. Lightning. Thunder, loljk. But seriously:

Scar, Via, Avi, Skye, Raine, Ree.

Gracie: I shall name my next character Scar! Bwahaha.

I like Laine, Cash, Naia, Paetyn and Thyla ^-^

kirstin ✿ Yes, yes! She should be there ^^
Naia <3

message 278: by Sarah (new)

Sarah My friend Ana: Tasia, which she took from her full name Anastasia.

My friend Genevieve: Nevia, which she took from a variation of her name Zenevieva.

Me: Essa, because one of my NaNoWriMo friends thought it'd be cool, seeing as I wrote a random blurb about a chick named Theresa.

Brittany Well your friends have cool real names already! Lol. I don't know what I would want...Maybe like Xenia or Leana or Senny or Ohioan...Lol. Think of better ones later.

Mirkat A dystopia is a community or society, usually fictional, that is in some important way undesirable or frightening. It is the opposite of a utopia. Such societies appear in many works of fiction, particularly in stories set in a speculative future. Dystopias are often characterized by dehumanization,[1] totalitarian governments, environmental disaster,[2] or other characteristics associated with a cataclysmic decline in society. Elements of dystopias may vary from environmental to political and social issues. Dystopian societies have culminated in a broad series of sub-genres of fiction and are often used to raise real-world issues regarding society, environment, politics, religion, psychology, spirituality, or technology that may become present in the future. For this reason, dystopias have taken the form of a multitude of speculations, such as pollution, poverty, societal collapse, political repression, or totalitarianism. (Wikipedia)

You know what it's not? "A community or society with super-special/cool names."

message 281: by amanda (new) - rated it 4 stars

I just love the name river and it can have so much meaning , and oblivion is my favorite word and i think it would be a cool name and then hope because i like that name too. and i would call my self rohp for short because my last name starts with a P.

Eh, fair point. Anything dystopian I write has normal names for the most part, and that's why I like Divergent. Normal names. Beatrice and Christina and Tobias. I know kids with all of those names, actually. It makes it more...real.

Doesn't mean we can't have fun with crazy whacked-out names, though ;)

that is the best dystopian name ever. SERIOUSLY.

Adrianne De Veyra I'll just have to name myself Aryan then, it was my nickname but I still do find it weird sometimes.

Thanks for replying.... I was starting to feel invisible. ;)

I tend to agree that sticking with more ordinary names adds to the realism. One of the more interesting things about the world-building in a good dystopian novel is the idea that the frightening society presented is a possible future.

Elizabeth I would be Sea, I think that it's just a really unique name.

Jennifer Calhoun taylor wrote: "Emma wrote: "Ember! For boy or girl."

Oooh. That's pretty. :3

I really like the name Camille. I don't know how dystopian that sounds, but I'd probably be a side character like Marlene or Madge."

Camille is my daughter's name, so I really like it too. I like Poppy or Piper.

message 289: by Carmen (new) - rated it 3 stars

Carmen Rebel I'm sticking with my own name of Carmen Rebel. Honestly you can't get much more dystopian than that. Carmen means song, poem or incantation in latin so you get points for it being from an already dead language (on top of being a crazy opera) and rebel is self explanatory.

message 290: by Kelly (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kelly i would go with Katara because i think it sounds very cool

message 291: by Jordan (last edited Dec 01, 2013 04:43AM) (new)

Jordan Drake I love the name Echo. It's one of my favorite "dystopian" name. I also like Eira, Lake, and Sora! :)

DarknessIsUponUs Akaelia it sounds so pretty! and elegant

Princess Godoy Ramen :) I think it's fierce :P ohhh and delicious xD lol

message 294: by Olivia (new) - rated it 5 stars

Olivia i love the name Cassia (from Matched) but it's not really for me...

message 295: by Masen (new) - rated it 3 stars

Masen My Distopian name would probably be Shannon, but a cool nickname would be Glade. :)

message 296: by Jesse (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jesse Conner I think my Dystopian name would be Delia Blair. But people would call me Dee.

Valeria I think I would choose
Malon
Saria
Rowan
Or even Zelda

Emma Mirkat wrote: "Y'know, the names in the Divergent series are really pretty ordinary, wouldn't you agree? Beatrice, Caleb, Susan, Robert, Molly, Uriah, Will, Peter, Al, Jeannine, Tobias, Tori, Marcus, Andrew, Nat..."

I agree that the names in Divergent are actually quite ordinary. It's interesting to me how many of those so-called "old fashioned" names like Beatrice are becoming popular again. I also found it weird that there were around 12 names listed in this thread that belong to someone in my family. Clarissa, Camille, Caleb, Cass, Lydia, Gideon, Isabelle and several more that I can't remember right now. Oh, and Marcus (Four's dad in Divergent) is a name that has been in my family (at least one person in each generation) at least as far back as the late 1700s. I never considered those names to be unique.

message 299: by Macy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Macy Rodriguez Astrid. Ash for short.
