Like with the ribbons and stuff hanging from the ceilings? How was it?

message 402: by Annie (new)

Annie Hartman (anniebananie) | 242 comments I agree with waking up before work/class and working out. I find the older I get, the easier it is for me to get going in the morning. I got up this morning, actually, and headed to the gym before work and I felt SO good all day! I will definitely be there tomorrow too!

message 403: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Oh man I wish it had ribbons from the ceiling, basically you get in regular yoga poses, like warrior, and either do squats or lunges or pushups. It was "fun", I was sore for almost a week but in a good way. Today I went to an abs and arms class which I think was good.
As strange as it sounds what makes it hard for me to work out early isn't getting up but getting out of PJs. To wake up and put on work out clothes for only 20 minutes seemed like a waste, especially since it usually wouldn't last that long.

message 404: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker That sounds kind of like the DVD I've been doing. I like that it lasts only 30 minutes. One of my friends bought the ABBA edition of Just Dance for the Wii. I LOVED IT! I really want to get the regular Just Dance one because of the variety of songs, but the ABBA one would be fun too. If you really do all of the motions, you get a great workout. If you want to win the game, you just concentrate on your right arm. I always danced growing up, so it would be the kind of workout I'd stick with. Plus it would provide variety for me. The yoga is nice, but I could see myself getting tired of it in a few weeks.

How is everyone else's training going?

message 405: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 61 comments I've fallen off the exercise wagon for the past week or so. I'm going to try to get back into it this week. I'm just going to try to fit it in whenever I can, even if I only have 10 minutes here or there some days.

message 406: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm so far off the wagon, I've stopped choking on its dust! I took the past week off. I'd like to find my Shred DVD to do at Zach's and then do yoga at my apartment. I'd love a Just Dance game, but why not work with what I already have? Getting up at 5 to workout is still the plan. I feel like I've finally gotten a handle on things and have a good plan. I just need to do it.

message 407: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I also had a bad week for the my plan. I had a grad application surprisingly due last night so Monday and Weds after work when I would have gone to a class I got that taken care of. Next week starting fresh through...

message 408: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Anna, don't you feel like a huge weight it lifted from finishing the grad application? I know I did. I too am starting fresh on Monday.

I need to get into shape for my wedding. I don't really need to lose weight as I am skinny but I am just SO out of shape and would like to look really great and toned in my dress..which I totally bought!!! I HATE working out and really never do it so this is going ot b e hard. Thinking about getting Wii Fit.

message 410: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Jamie, The Wii Fit would probably be good for you. In my experience, I'm beginning to think the Wii Fit is more for the "last few pounds" or maintaining stage.

message 411: by Bianca (new)

Bianca (sugardustedbooks) I have made a goal to not eat fast food for the year. One month down. As for working out I do a good job off and on. Whenever I get a lot of school work it makes it harder though.

message 412: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker That's an admirable goal Bianca! I wish I could make the same one. I love to cook. And I've gotten to the point where I like most leftovers. My biggest problem is a lack of time, so I wind up picking up something. After putting in 7 to 8 hours on campus (sometimes longer), I just want to hurry up and eat. I'm trying to do better. With Zach going on the Abs diet, things might wind up changing to where we only eat out once a week or so.

Yeah I am on campus a lot of the day too and sometimes I just want to go to the cafe and order something greasy so I stopped taking money with me. Also, I don't drive so it is easier to avoid stopping by somewhere I shouldn't. I get what you mean when I get home I just want to scarf something down and then do all the other work I have to do before the night is over. I usually end up eating in front of my computer or text book (not the greatest habit). I have never heard of the abs diet. What is that?

message 414: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I wish I could do the not taking money with me, but I would probably have a meltdown about it. I live way off campus, so I have to drive. Or take the bus. But I'm not a fan of how long I have to wait for the bus. I've been trying to make something substantial and left-over generating on the weekend so I have some healthy leftovers to eat.

I haven't really looked at the abs diet, but here is my understanding: It has you eat about 6 smaller meals/snacks a day. You (or at least Zach) eats the same things over and over because the routine keeps him from reaching for something bad. You drink a ton of water. And there is a workout plan that does cardio 3 days a week and weights 3 days a week. Initially, you get one "cheat" meal a day. After the first few weeks (6 is standing out in my mind) you get a day of "cheat" meals. There's an entire book that goes with it.

message 415: by Megan (new)

Megan I'm a dance minor mainly because a) I love it, and b) it keeps me moving. This semester I have a technique class twice a week, a composition class that usually has some amount of movement in it two other days, and I have rehearsals at least one other day where I'm moving again.
I've also been trying to go to yoga at least once a week.
I'm a big believer in finding some sort of movement that you can enjoy or feel motivated to do, rather than forcing yourself to do some specific form of "exercise" because you know you should.

message 416: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Megan wrote: "I'm a big believer in finding some sort of movement that you can enjoy or feel motivated to do, rather than forcing yourself to do some specific form of "exercise" because you know you should. "

That's a great philosophy on exercise, Megan.

message 417: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Megan, That sounds like a lot of fun. I love dancing and one year I worked off about 20lbs from dancing around my living room for an hour a day.

I'm going to be totally honest: I haven't worked out at all. I did The Shred one day last week and loved it. But then we went back to my apartment, which is on the second floor. I don't know if it would bother my neighbor to do this workout at 5am, which is the only time I can find to work out. Then technical difficulties and feeling bad kept me from working out at Zach's. However, we are giving up fast food and really eating out in general for Lent. We use is as a crutch because it's quick and easy, whereas cooking takes effort and leftovers gets monotonous, so it really is a vice for us. But it will also have health benefits, which is a good plus.

message 418: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I've been doing good on my working out, I go twice a week and I'm generally pretty sore for the rest of the week so I feel like that means I'm doing something. 12 hours on campus is intimidating but it is so much easier for me to get to the gym once I'm already out of the house. It's also nice coming home after a long day feeling like I really accomplished something that is important to me.

My biggest thing about food is that I'm only one person and I don't know how to cook for one. I'll cook a recipe for 4 thinking I'll freeze half and have 1/4 for dinner and 1/4 for leftovers but then I eat half of it for one meal. Anyone have any tips for healthy singleton cooking/eating?

message 419: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I just had to start adapting meals for cooking for one because I was the same as you--I'd plan for four meals but would wind up eating too much the first go. I found a great stir-fry recipe that I can share.

message 420: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments I'd been doing SO good with my exercise and diet until this past week. Some things came up where I couldn't go to the gym at all (I try to go to the gym six times a week) and to top it off, I ate five pieces of pizza last night in about an hour. yuck.

message 421: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I hate weeks/nights like that! Things like that get me off track for much longer than they should.

I planned the meals for the week. We went to the grocery store. I picked up a few healthy snacks. I just need to find some kind of workout thing. I'd like to walk the lake, but probably the only time I could do it would be at night, like 9:00 or 10:00, and I wouldn't really feel comfortable doing it without someone else. Oh well. I need to make these changes. Period.

message 422: by Bianca (last edited Feb 25, 2012 09:42AM) (new)

Bianca (sugardustedbooks) So how is everyone doing? Staying on track? Ugh sometimes it is so hard. The worst is working out for me. I need to get back to it. Also it is harder trying to eat better when people are telling me don't be silly just eat that or sometimes if I really want something that's not that great I will eat half then try to give the rest to someone else and they give me crap for not eating the whole thing (more than a serving). Anyone else have problems with other people when they try to eat healthier?

message 423: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I am going to start The Shred. I spoke to my downstairs neighbor about me doing jumping jacks in my living room at 5am; she said it probably would not be a problem, so good.

I have been trying to eat better. I think except for eating out (which I gave up for Lent) I do pretty well. Over spring break, I am going out of town. I decided that I won't suggest going to grab something, but if my hosts suggest it, I won't demand special treatment, I will just make better decisions.

message 424: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (portuguesechristian) Just found a great stretching/toning routine, if you work at a desk all day :)

That's good that she doesn't mind. Good choice for lent I used to do that too. Yeah you kind of have to try to go with the flow with others but there is usually some better option available wherever you go. Glad to hear you're doing well :)

message 426: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Jessica, That looks pretty good. Some days I feel totally trapped at my desk. Thank you so much for sharing.

Bianca, I was happy to hear she doesn't mind. Or at least she won't immediately report me if it is a problem. I've discovered that if I don't work out first thing, it's not going to happen.

message 427: by Bianca (new)

Bianca (sugardustedbooks) I have thought about just working out in the morning but t takes me forever to get out of bed normally i don't know if I could do it.

message 428: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker This morning is a perfect example of my usual pitfall. My alarm is set for 5:00. I hit snooze 3 times, thus getting up at 5:30. By now, I feel like I just need to get to work instead of spending time to workout. I get up early to get in a few hours of quality, uninterrupted work because I can't get that later in the day. I just need to be better about not snoozing.

message 429: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments Lori, have you tried putting your alarm on the other side of the room? I've tried doing that but it doesn't work for me. I get out of bed, turn it off, and crawl back into bed. lol

I've been super lazy the past couple of weeks. I was sick for a week at the beginning of the month, and just haven't been able to get myself back into my gym routine.

message 430: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I use my phone for an alarm. I think I'd probably crawl back in bed after turning it off as well.

Zach and I are going to start walking the lake most nights of the week. It's a 5k track. After we get used to walking, we're going to build up to jogging parts of it. I rarely get any work done after supper anyway and it will be a good time to talk without distractions. The main hurdle will, of course, be getting out of the apartment.

message 431: by Amber (new)

Amber (hippiefemme) I'm so proud of all of you! I've been trying to find a program to work out. I agree with Megan that you should find something you enjoy doing. I was thinking of starting Taekwondo, but the local studio charges $665 up front (to cover six months tuition and the cost of a uniform), which is way out of my price range.

However, when I was walking back to my car from visiting the studio, I passed a Zumba fitness studio! They charge just $34.99/month for unlimited classes or $5 per class for non-members. I'm going to check it out tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully I can stick with it!

message 432: by Bianca (new)

Bianca (sugardustedbooks) I played Zumba on the Wii and I loved it. I haven't taken a class but hopefully you like it too.

message 433: by Bianca (new)

Bianca (sugardustedbooks) Hit a rut :( How is everyone else doing? Any tips to get all motivated again?

message 434: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I thought I'd resurrect this because it's summer and many of us have the time and the desire to make some changes.

Last night the boyfriend and I had a come to Jesus meeting about our diet and exercise habits, or lack thereof. We decided it was time to actually act instead of keep pussyfooting around about it. Neither of us has as much energy as we should and it's just highly unhealthy. We decided to go on the Abs Diet beginning Monday. I bought The New Abs Diet for Women: The Six-Week Plan to Flatten Your Stomach and Keep You Lean for Life because men and women are different. I flipped through it last night and feel comfortable and good about it. I'm going to get up in the mornings and do 20-30 minutes of pilates and yoga on alternating days. At night's I'll do the Abba You Can Dance on the Wii. As I get more into it, I may buy other ones, like the Broadway Dance version. I think that both of us being on the same diet will help because we can split groceries and it's not like one of us will be eating something fabulous while the other is eating something awful.

message 435: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments I've been doing pretty good with working out (well..except the past few days, it went from 70° to in the high 90°s).

Good luck, Lori!

It is supposed to be 108 here today! It is easier working out indoors down here in the summer!

message 437: by Liann (new)

Liann | 7 comments Ohey, It's 108 here today too. :D

message 438: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker No idea what it is out here today, but I'd sure rather be out in it than inside! I'm contemplating cutting out early, but I've already turned in my time sheet saying I was working until 4:00.

Lori Walker Day 1 of the Abs Diet going pretty well. I've really enjoyed the two abs diet recipes I've tried so far. Looking forward to the one for supper. Also my Abba game should be in today! I can't tell you how excited I am about that.

Friends posted pic's of facebook of yesterdays trip to Vegas, and I look huge! I hate pictures anyways, but I may have to start doing something to fix that. UGH!

message 443: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Ugh. I hate pictures like that. Or when you catch a glimpse of yourself and go "I can't possibly be THAT big!"

message 444: by Bianca (new)

Bianca (sugardustedbooks) Full body pics...Ugh. No way. I hate them as well.

message 445: by Niel (new)

Niel | 390 comments I have to get back to exercising been off it for awhile and can't seem to get back to it.

message 446: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I did pilates today. But it took too long, so I had to stop after 30 minutes even though I had a few exercises left. I'll have to do yoga every morning, which is fine. I added the pilates for variety. Maybe once school starts and I don't have to be at work as early (assuming I don't have to be at work as early) I'll add in the pilates.

I had an absolute blast doing the Abba dance workout last night! I didn't get very many points because I wasn't holding the remote right, but because I'm doing it for the workout not the game, I don't really care. I did it for 30 minutes and worked up a good sweat. I can't wait to do it again tonight.

message 447: by Niel (new)

Niel | 390 comments I've tried yoga but it is to slow for me and I have trouble staying interested in it
