Polynyas Cinema Borealis: Ingmar Bergman and the Swedish Ethos by Vernon Young. Equinox Books First edition paperback 1972. Edition features two black and white photo galleries.
Synopsis
Cinema Borealis is a compelling analysis of every film made by Ingmar Bergman. Also, it is a critique of the beliefs (and disbeliefs) on which the acclaimed Swedish director's films are based. In a witty, lucid manner, Vernon Young scrutinizes the myths and truths of "Bergmania" and concludes-- going against the grain of most Bergman criticism-- that he is neither an intellectual nor really profound, but is, instead, a sensitive artist whose morose themes mirror a national pathology. Adding much documentation in support of his highly personal convictions, Vernon Young has given us the kind of stimulating film book that not only adds new aspects to a major figure but is bound to make us question our own inner reactions to the films themselves.
